Jezus onderwijst zijn leerlingen

1 Op een sabbat wandelde Jezus met zijn leerlingen door de korenvelden. Onder het lopen plukten ze wat aren af, wreven die stuk tussen hun handen en aten de graankorrels op.2 Enkele Farizeeën zeiden: ‘Dat mag niet! Wat u daar doet, is graan oogsten en dat is op de sabbat verboden.’3 Jezus antwoordde: ‘Hebt u nooit gelezen wat David deed toen hij en zijn mannen honger hadden?4 Hij ging de tempel van God binnen, nam de offerbroden, die alleen voor de priesters bestemd waren, en at die met zijn mannen op.

5 Ik, de Mensenzoon, beslis wat op de sabbat wel en niet mag.’
6 Op een andere sabbat, toen Hij in de synagoge was en de mensen over God vertelde, zat daar ook een man met een verschrompelde rechterhand.7 De bijbelgeleerden en Farizeeën hielden Jezus goed in het oog. Want als Hij deze ongelukkige man nu, dus op de sabbat, zou genezen, zouden zij een reden hebben Hem aan te klagen.8 Maar Hij wist wat zij dachten. ‘Sta op,’ zei Hij tegen de man met de verschrompelde hand. ‘Kom hier bij Mij staan. Dan kan iedereen u zien.’ De man deed het.9 Jezus zei tegen de Farizeeën en de bijbelgeleerden: ‘Ik heb een vraag: wat moet men op de sabbat doen? Goed of slecht? Moet men een leven redden of het verloren laten gaan?’10 Hij keek hen een voor een aan. ‘Steek uw hand uit,’ zei Hij tegen de man. Terwijl de man dat deed, werd zijn hand helemaal gezond.

11 De tegenstanders van Jezus waren woedend. Zij staken de koppen bij elkaar om uit te vinden hoe zij met Hem konden afrekenen.
12 Korte tijd daarna ging Hij de bergen in om te bidden. Hij bad de hele nacht tot God.13 Tegen de morgen riep Hij zijn leerlingen bij Zich en koos er twaalf uit die Hij zijn apostelen, gezanten, noemde.14 Het waren Simon (die Hij voortaan Petrus noemde) en diens broer Andreas, Jakobus, Johannes,15 Filippus, Bartholomeüs, Mattheüs, Thomas, Jakobus (de zoon van Alfeüs), Simon de Zeloot,16 Judas (de zoon van Jakobus) en Judas Iskariot (die Hem later zou uitleveren).17 Zij daalden af naar een vlak gedeelte, waar vele volgelingen van Jezus hen omringden. Van alle kanten waren de mensen toegestroomd, zij kwamen helemaal uit Judea, Jeruzalem en uit de streek van Tyrus en Sidon aan de Middellandse Zee.18 Al die mensen waren gekomen om naar Hem te luisteren en door Hem te worden genezen. En uit vele mensen verjoeg Hij boze geesten.

19 Iedereen probeerde Hem aan te raken, omdat een geweldige kracht van Hem uitging. Hij maakte hen allemaal beter.

20 Daarna liet Hij zijn blik over zijn leerlingen gaan. En Hij zei: ‘Gelukkig u die arm bent, want voor u is het Koninkrijk van God.

21 Gelukkig u die nu honger heeft, want uw honger zal worden gestild. Gelukkig u die nu huilt, want eens zal u lachen.
22 Gelukkig u die gehaat, genegeerd, beledigd en verbannen wordt omdat u bij Mij, de Mensenzoon, hoort.

23 Wees blij als dat gebeurt. Spring op van vreugde, want uw beloning in de hemel zal groot zijn. Met de profeten hebben zij vroeger immers net zo gedaan!
24 Maar pas op als u rijk bent! U bent er dan slecht aan toe! Want het geld is het enige geluk dat u ten deel valt.25 Pas op als u in overvloed leeft, want er komt een tijd dat u honger zult hebben. Pas op als u nu plezier hebt, want eens zult u huilen van ellende.

26 Pas op als iedereen goed van u spreekt! Want dat hebben ze vroeger van de valse profeten ook gedaan.
27 Luister, allemaal! Heb uw vijanden lief. Als de mensen u haten, wees dan goed voor hen.28 Als de mensen u vervloeken, vraag God dan of Hij goed voor hen wil zijn. Als de mensen u pijn doen, bid dan dat zij gelukkig mogen worden.

29 Als iemand u een klap in uw gezicht geeft, laat hem dan begaan en verdedig u niet. Als iemand uw mantel afpakt, geef hem dan ook uw hemd.
30 Als iemand u iets vraagt, geef het hem. Als u iets wordt afgepakt, probeer dan niet het terug te krijgen.31 Wilt u dat anderen goed voor u zijn? Wees dan zelf ook goed voor hen.32 Wat voor bijzonders is het te houden van mensen die ook van u houden? Dat doet iedereen.33 En als u goed bent voor mensen die ook goed voor u zijn, is dat zo bijzonder? Nee, dat is heel gewoon.34 Als u geld leent aan mensen die het u kunnen terugbetalen, wat voor bijzonders is daaraan? Iedereen wil wel geld uitlenen als hij erop kan rekenen het terug te krijgen.35 Weet u wat u moet doen? Uw vijanden liefhebben en goed voor hen zijn en hun iets te leen geven zonder erop te rekenen dat ze u terugbetalen. Dan krijgt u een grote beloning in de hemel. Dan zult u echte zonen van God zijn. Want Hij is vriendelijk en goed voor ondankbare en slechte mensen.36 Heb net zoveel liefde en medeleven als uw hemelse Vader.37 Spreek geen oordeel uit, dan zal er over u ook geen oordeel uitgesproken worden. Veroordeel niemand, dan zal u ook niet veroordeeld worden. Vergeef en u zal vergeven worden.

38 Geef en u zult iets terugkrijgen, meer dan overvloedig zult u ervoor terukrijgen. Met de maat waarmee u meet, zult ook u gemeten worden.’
39 Jezus maakte een en ander duidelijk met een paar voorbeelden: ‘De ene blinde kan de andere blinde niet leiden. Want als de een in een kuil valt, trekt hij de ander mee.40 Een leerling is niet meer dan zijn leraar. Als hij alles van hem heeft geleerd, is hij hoogstens gelijk aan zijn leraar.41 Waarom maakt u zich druk over de splinter in het oog van een ander terwijl in uw eigen oog een balk zit?42 Hoe durft u te zeggen: “Kom, ik zal die splinter wel even uit uw oog halen,” terwijl u de balk in uw eigen oog niet eens ziet? Huichelaar! Haal eerst die balk uit uw eigen oog. Dan ziet u misschien scherp genoeg om die splinter uit het oog van de ander te halen.43 Aan een goede boom komen geen slechte vruchten en aan een slechte boom geen goede.44 Een boom is te herkennen aan zijn vruchten. Aan een doornstruik komen geen vijgen en aan een braamstruik geen druiven.

45 Zo is het ook met de mensen. Iemand die goed is, doet goede dingen. Iemand die slecht is, doet slechte dingen. Je merkt het vooral aan wat hij zegt. Waar het hart vol van is, loopt de mond van over.
46 Hoe haalt u het in uw hoofd Mij Here te noemen? U doet niet eens wat Ik zeg.47 Ieder die naar Mij komt luisteren en doet wat Ik zeg,48 lijkt op een man die een huis bouwt en eerst diep graaft om de fundering op de rots te kunnen leggen. Als bij een overstroming golven tegen zijn huis beuken, blijft het staan, want het is degelijk gebouwd.

49 Maar wie naar Mij luistert en niet doet wat Ik zeg, lijkt op een man die zijn huis zomaar op de grond neerzet, zonder een degelijke fundering te leggen. Als dat huis wordt getroffen door het woeste geweld van een overstroming, stort het onmiddellijk in. Er blijft niets anders van over dan een grote puinhoop.’

1 Now it came to pass on a sabbath, that he was going through the grainfields; and his disciples plucked the ears, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.2 But certain of the Pharisees said, Why do ye that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath day?3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read even this, what David did, when he was hungry, he, and they that were with him;4 how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests alone?5 And he said unto them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath.6 And it came to pass on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered.7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find how to accuse him.8 But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man that had his hand withered, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.9 And Jesus said unto them, I ask you, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do harm? to save a life, or to destroy it?10 And he looked round about on them all, and said unto him, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored.11 But they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.12 And it came to pass in these days, that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God.13 And when it was day, he called his disciples; and he chose from them twelve, whom also he named apostles:14 Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,15 and Matthew and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor;17 and he came down with them, and stood on a level place, and a great multitude of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judaea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;18 and they that were troubled with unclean spirits were healed.19 And all the multitude sought to touch him; for power came forth from him, and healed them all.20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the same manner did their fathers unto the prophets.24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.25 Woe unto you, ye that are full now! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you, ye that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for in the same manner did their fathers to the false prophets.27 But I say unto you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you,28 bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you.29 To him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and from him that taketh away thy cloak withhold not thy coat also.30 Give to every one that asketh thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.32 And if ye love them that love you, what thank have ye? for even sinners love those that love them.33 And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? for even sinners do the same.34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much.35 But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.36 Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful.37 And judge not, and ye shall not be judged: and condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: release, and ye shall be released:38 give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, shall they give into your bosom. For with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again.39 And he spake also a parable unto them, Can the blind guide the blind? shall they not both fall into a pit?40 The disciple is not above his teacher: but every one when he is perfected shall be as his teacher.41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?42 Or how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me cast out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.43 For there is no good tree that bringeth forth corrupt fruit; nor again a corrupt tree that bringeth forth good fruit.44 For each tree is known by its own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?47 Every one that cometh unto me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like:48 he is like a man building a house, who digged and went deep, and laid a foundation upon the rock: and when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: because it had been well builded.49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that built a house upon the earth without a foundation; against which the stream brake, and straightway it fell in; and the ruin of that house was great.
