Jésus et le centurion de Capharnaüm
Mt 8.5-13 ; cf. Jn 4.46-54
1 tAprès avoir achevé tous ces discours au peuple qui l’écoutait, il entra à Capharnaüm.
2 tUn centurion avait un esclave malade qui était sur le point de mourir et qui lui était très cher. 3 tIl entendit parler de Jésus et lui envoya quelques anciens des Juifs pour lui demander de venir sauver son esclave. 4 tIls arrivèrent auprès de Jésus et le supplièrent d’une manière pressante en disant : Il est digne que tu lui accordes cela, 5 tcar il aime notre nation, et c’est lui qui a construit notre synagogue. 6 tJésus s’en alla avec eux. Il n’était plus très loin de la maison quand le centurion envoya des amis lui dire : Seigneur, ne prends pas tant de peine, car ce serait trop d’honneur pour moi que tu entres sous mon toit. 7 tC’est aussi pour cela que je ne me suis pas jugé digne de venir en personne vers toi. Mais dis une parole, et que mon serviteur soit guéri ! 8 tCar je suis moi-même soumis à l’autorité de mes supérieurs et j’ai des soldats sous mes ordres ; je dis à l’un : « Va ! » et il va, à l’autre : « Viens ! » et il vient, et à mon esclave : « Fais ceci ! » et il le fait. 9 tLorsque Jésus entendit ces paroles, il s’étonna à son sujet, se tourna vers la foule qui le suivait et dit : Je vous le dis, même en Israël je n’ai pas trouvé une telle foi.
10 tDe retour à la maison, les envoyés trouvèrent l’esclave en bonne santé.Le jeune homme de Naïn
11 tEnsuite il se rendit dans une ville appelée Naïn ; ses disciples et une grande foule faisaient route avec lui. 12 tLorsqu’il approcha de la porte de la ville, on portait en terre un mort, fils unique de sa mère, qui était veuve ; et il y avait avec elle une importante foule de la ville. 13 tLe Seigneur la vit ; il fut ému par elle et lui dit : Ne pleure pas ! 14 tIl s’approcha et toucha le cercueil. Ceux qui le portaient s’arrêtèrent. Il dit : Jeune homme, je te l’ordonne, réveille-toi ! 15 tEt le mort s’assit et se mit à parler. Il le rendit à sa mère. 16 tTous furent saisis de crainte ; ils glorifiaient Dieu et disaient : Un grand prophète s’est levé parmi nous, et : Dieu est intervenu en faveur de son peuple.
17 tCette parole se répandit à son sujet dans la Judée tout entière et dans tous les environs.Les envoyés de Jean le Baptiseur
Mt 11.2-19
18 tLes disciples de Jean lui racontèrent tout cela. Jean appela deux de ses disciples 19 tet les envoya demander au Seigneur : Est-ce toi, celui qui vient, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ? 20 tArrivés auprès de lui, les hommes dirent : Jean le Baptiseur nous a envoyés te demander : « Est-ce toi, celui qui vient, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ? » 21 tA ce moment même, il guérit beaucoup de gens de maladies, d’infirmités et d’esprits mauvais, et il rendit la vue à de nombreux aveugles.
22 tEt il leur répondit : Allez raconter à Jean ce que vous avez vu et entendu :
les aveugles retrouvent la vue, les infirmes marchent,
les lépreux sont purifiés,les sourds entendent,
les morts se réveillent, la bonne nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres.
23 tHeureux celui pour qui je ne serai pas une cause de chute !
24 tAprès le départ des messagers de Jean, il se mit à dire aux foules à propos de Jean : Qu’êtes-vous allés voir au désert ? Un roseau agité par le vent ? 25 tAlors, qu’êtes-vous allés voir ? Un homme vêtu avec raffinement ? Mais ceux qui portent des vêtements somptueux et qui vivent dans le luxe sont dans les palais royaux ! 26 tQu’êtes-vous donc allés voir ? Un prophète ? Oui, je vous le dis, et plus qu’un prophète.
27 tC’est à son sujet qu’il est écrit :
J’envoie devant toimon messager,
pour frayer ton chemin devant toi.
28 tJe vous le dis, parmi ceux qui sont nés de femmes, il n’y en a pas de plus grand que Jean. Cependant, le plus petit dans le royaume de Dieu est plus grand que lui.
29 tTout le peuple qui l’avait écouté, et les collecteurs des taxes, avaient justifié Dieu en recevant le baptême de Jean ;
30 tmais les pharisiens et les spécialistes de la loi, en ne recevant pas de lui le baptême, avaient rejeté les décisions de Dieu à leur égard.
31 tA qui donc comparerai-je les gens de cette génération ? A qui sont-ils semblables ?
32 tVoici à quoi ils sont semblables : des enfants assis sur la place publique, qui s’appellent les uns les autres pour dire :
Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n’avez pas dansé ;
nous avons chanté des complaintes, et vous n’avez pas pleuré.
33 tCar Jean le Baptiseur est venu, il ne mangeait pas de pain et ne buvait pas de vin, et vous dites : « Il a un démon ! » 34 tLe Fils de l’homme est venu, mangeant et buvant, et vous dites : « C’est un glouton et un buveur, un ami des collecteurs des taxes, des pécheurs ! »
35 tMais la sagesse a été justifiée par tous ses enfants.Jésus et la pécheresse

36 tUn des pharisiens l’invita à manger avec lui. Il entra donc chez le pharisien et s’installa à table. 37 tOr une femme, une pécheresse de la ville, sut qu’il était à table chez le pharisien ; elle apporta un flacon d’albâtre plein de parfum 38 tet se tint derrière lui, à ses pieds. Elle pleurait et se mit à mouiller de ses larmes les pieds de Jésus ; elle les essuyait avec ses cheveux, les embrassait et répandait sur eux du parfum.
39 tEn voyant cela, le pharisien qui l’avait invité se dit : Si cet homme était prophète, il saurait qui est la femme qui le touche et ce qu’elle est : une pécheresse.
40 tJésus lui dit : Simon, j’ai quelque chose à te dire. – Maître, parle, répondit-il. 41 t– Un créancier avait deux débiteurs ; l’un devait cinq cents deniers et l’autre cinquante. 42 tComme ils n’avaient pas de quoi le rembourser, il leur fit grâce à tous les deux. Lequel des deux l’aimera le plus ? 43 tSimon répondit : Je suppose que c’est celui à qui il a fait grâce de la plus grosse somme. Il lui dit : Tu as bien jugé. 44 tPuis il se tourna vers la femme et dit à Simon : Tu vois cette femme ? Je suis entré chez toi, et tu ne m’as pas donné d’eau pour mes pieds ; mais elle, elle a mouillé mes pieds de ses larmes et les a essuyés avec ses cheveux. 45 tTu ne m’as pas donné de baiser, mais elle, depuis que je suis entré, elle n’a pas cessé de m’embrasser les pieds. 46 tTu n’as pas répandu d’huile sur ma tête ; mais elle, elle a répandu du parfum sur mes pieds. 47 tC’est pourquoi, je te le dis, ses nombreux péchés sont pardonnés, puisqu’elle a beaucoup aimé. Mais celui à qui l’on pardonne peu aime peu.
48 tEt il dit à la femme : Tes péchés sont pardonnés.
49 tCeux qui étaient à table avec lui commencèrent à se dire : Qui est-il, celui-ci, qui va jusqu’à pardonner les péchés ? 50 tMais il dit à la femme : Ta foi t’a sauvée ; va en paix.
Luke 7
1 After he had ended all his sayings in the ears of the people, he entered into Capernaum.2 And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick and at the point of death.3 And when he heard concerning Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, asking him that he would come and save his servant.4 And they, when they came to Jesus, besought him earnestly, saying, He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him;5 for he loveth our nation, and himself built us our synagogue.6 And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof:7 wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say the word, and my servant shall be healed.8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.9 And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole.11 And it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went to a city called Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great multitude.12 Now when he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, there was carried out one that was dead, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.13 And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.14 And he came nigh and touched the bier: and the bearers stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.16 And fear took hold on all: and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is arisen among us: and, God hath visited his people.17 And this report went forth concerning him in the whole of Judaea, and all the region round about.18 And the disciples of John told him of all these things.19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to the Lord, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another?20 And when the men were come unto him, they said, John the Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another?21 In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits; and on many that were blind he bestowed sight.22 And he answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye have seen and heard; the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good tidings preached to them.23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind?25 But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.26 But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.27 This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there is none greater than John: yet he that is but little in the kingdom of God is greater than he.29 And all the people when they heard, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him.31 Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation, and to what are they like?32 They are like unto children that sit in the marketplace, and call one to another; who say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not weep.33 For John the Baptist is come eating no bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon.34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!35 And wisdom is justified of all her children.36 And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he entered into the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to meat.37 And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner; and when she knew that he was sitting at meat in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster cruse of ointment,38 and standing behind at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.39 Now when the Pharisee that had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner.40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Teacher, say on.41 A certain lender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred shillings, and the other fifty.42 When they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?43 Simon answered and said, He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.44 And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath wetted my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair.45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet.46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but she hath anointed my feet with ointment.47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that even forgiveth sins?50 And he said unto the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
