Lucas 7

Un capitán romano

1 Cuando Jesús terminó de enseñar a la gente, se fue al pueblo de Cafarnaúm.

2 Allí vivía un capitán del ejército romano, que tenía un sirviente a quien apreciaba mucho. Ese sirviente estaba muy enfermo y a punto de morir.

3 Cuando el capitán oyó hablar de Jesús, mandó a unos jefes de los judíos para que lo buscaran y le dijeran: «Por favor, venga usted a mi casa y sane a mi sirviente.»
4 Ellos fueron a ver a Jesús y le dieron el mensaje. Además, le rogaron: «Por favor, haz lo que te pide este capitán romano. Merece que lo ayudes, porque es un hombre bueno.

5 A los judíos nos trata bien, ¡y hasta mandó construir una sinagoga para nosotros!»
6 Jesús fue con ellos, y cuando estaban cerca de la casa, el capitán romano mandó a unos amigos para que le dijeran a Jesús: «Señor, no se moleste usted por mí, yo no merezco que entre en mi casa.7 Tampoco me siento digno de ir a verlo yo mismo. Solamente le ruego que ordene que mi sirviente se sane; yo sé que él quedará completamente sano.

8 Yo estoy acostumbrado a dar órdenes y a obedecerlas. Cuando le digo a uno de mis soldados: “¡Ve!”, me obedece y va. Si le digo a otro: “¡Ven!”, me obedece y viene. Y si le digo a uno de mis sirvientes: “¡Haz esto!”, lo hace.»

9 Al escuchar las palabras del capitán, Jesús se quedó admirado y les dijo a quienes lo seguían: «En todo Israel no he encontrado a nadie que confíe tanto en mí, como este capitán romano.»

10 Cuando los mensajeros regresaron a la casa, encontraron al sirviente completamente sano.

El hijo de una viuda

11 Poco después, Jesús y sus discípulos fueron al pueblo de Naín. Mucha gente iba con ellos.

12 Cuando llegaron a la entrada del pueblo, vieron a unos hombres que llevaban a enterrar a un muchacho. El muerto era el único hijo de una viuda. Mucha gente del pueblo la acompañaba.
13 Cuando Jesús la vio, sintió compasión por ella y le dijo: «No llores.»14 Entonces se acercó y tocó la camilla. Los hombres dejaron de caminar, y Jesús le dijo al muerto: «¡Joven, te ordeno que te levantes!»

15 El muchacho se levantó y empezó a hablar. Entonces Jesús llevó al muchacho a donde estaba su madre.

16 Al ver eso, la gente tuvo mucho miedo y comenzó a alabar a Dios. Todos decían: «¡Hay un profeta entre nosotros! ¡Ahora Dios va a ayudarnos!»

17 Y muy pronto la gente de la región de Judea y de sus alrededores supo lo que Jesús había hecho.

Juan el Bautista

18 Los discípulos de Juan el Bautista fueron a contarle todo lo que Jesús hacía. Por eso, Juan envió a dos de sus discípulos

19 para que le preguntaran a Jesús si él era el Mesías , o si debían esperar a otro.

20 Cuando llegaron a donde estaba Jesús, le dijeron:

—Juan el Bautista nos envió a preguntarte si eres el Mesías, o si debemos esperar a otro.

21 En ese momento, Jesús sanó a muchos que estaban enfermos y que sufrían mucho. También sanó a los que tenían espíritus malos, y a muchos ciegos les devolvió la vista.

22 Luego les respondió a los dos hombres:

—Vayan y díganle a Juan todo lo que ustedes han visto y oído:

Ahora los ciegos pueden ver
y los cojos caminan bien.

Los leprosos quedan sanos,
y los sordos ya pueden oír.

Los que estaban muertos
han vuelto a la vida,
y a los pobres se les anuncia
la buena noticia de salvación .

23 »¡Dios bendecirá a los que no me abandonan porque hago todo esto!

24 Cuando los discípulos de Juan se fueron, Jesús comenzó a hablar con la gente acerca de Juan, y dijo:

«¿A quién fueron a ver al desierto? ¿Era acaso un hombre doblado como las cañas que dobla el viento?25 ¿Se trataba de alguien vestido con ropa muy lujosa? Recuerden que los que se visten así viven en el palacio de los reyes.26 ¿A quién fueron a ver entonces? ¿Fueron a ver a un profeta ? Por supuesto que sí. En realidad, Juan era más que profeta;

27 era el mensajero de quien Dios había hablado cuando dijo:

“Yo envío a mi mensajero
delante de ti,
a preparar todo
para tu llegada.”

28 »Les aseguro que en este mundo no ha nacido un hombre más importante que Juan el Bautista. Sin embargo, el menos importante en el reino de Dios es superior a Juan.»

29 Los que habían escuchado a Juan le pidieron que los bautizara , y hasta los cobradores de impuestos hicieron lo mismo. Así obedecieron lo que Dios había mandado.

30 Pero los fariseos y los maestros de la Ley no quisieron obedecer a Dios, ni tampoco quisieron que Juan los bautizara.

31-32 Jesús siguió diciendo:

«Ustedes, los que viven en esta época, son como los niños que se sientan a jugar en las plazas, y gritan a otros niños:

“Tocamos la flauta, pero ustedes no bailaron. Cantamos canciones tristes, pero ustedes no lloraron.”
33 »Porque Juan el Bautista ayunaba y no bebía vino, y ustedes decían que tenía un demonio .34 Luego, vine yo, el Hijo del hombre , que como y bebo, y ustedes dicen que soy un glotón y un borracho; que soy amigo de gente de mala fama y de los que cobran impuestos para Roma. t

35 Pero recuerden que la sabiduría de Dios se prueba por sus resultados.»

Simón el fariseo

36 Un fariseo llamado Simón invitó a Jesús a comer en su casa. Jesús aceptó y se sentó a la mesa. t

37 Una mujer de mala fama, t t que vivía en aquel pueblo, supo que Jesús estaba comiendo en casa de Simón. Tomó entonces un frasco de perfume muy fino, y fue a ver a Jesús.

38 La mujer entró y se arrodilló detrás t de Jesús, y tanto lloraba que sus lágrimas caían sobre los pies de Jesús. Después le secó los pies con sus propios cabellos, se los besó y les puso el perfume que llevaba.

39 Al ver esto, Simón pensó: «Si de veras este hombre fuera profeta , sabría que lo está tocando una mujer de mala fama.»

40 Jesús dijo:

—Simón, tengo algo que decirte.

—Te escucho, Maestro —dijo él.

41 Jesús le puso este ejemplo:

—Dos hombres le debían dinero a alguien. Uno de ellos le debía quinientas monedas de plata, y el otro sólo cincuenta.

42 Como ninguno de los dos tenía con qué pagar, ese hombre les perdonó a los dos la deuda. ¿Qué opinas tú? ¿Cuál de los dos estará más agradecido con ese hombre?

43 Simón contestó:

—El que le debía más.

—¡Muy bien! —dijo Jesús.

44 Luego Jesús miró a la mujer y le dijo a Simón:

—¿Ves a esta mujer? Cuando entré en tu casa, tú no me diste agua para lavarme los pies. Ella, en cambio, me los ha lavado con sus lágrimas y los ha secado con sus cabellos.45 Tú no me saludaste con un beso. Ella, en cambio, desde que llegué a tu casa no ha dejado de besarme los pies.46 Tú no me pusiste aceite sobre la cabeza. Ella, en cambio, me ha perfumado los pies.

47 Me ama mucho porque sabe que sus muchos pecados ya están perdonados. En cambio, al que se le perdonan pocos pecados, ama poco.

48 Después Jesús le dijo a la mujer: «Tus pecados están perdonados.»

49 Los otros invitados comenzaron a preguntarse: «¿Cómo se atreve éste a perdonar pecados?»

50 Pero Jesús le dijo a la mujer: «Tú confías en mí, y por eso te has salvado . Vete tranquila.»

LUKE 7

Jesus Heals //an Army Officer's Servant

(Matthew 8.5-13; John 4.43-54)

1 After Jesus had finished teaching the people, he went to Capernaum. 2 In this town an army officer's servant was sick and about to die. The officer liked his servant very much.

3 And when he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish leaders to ask him to come and heal the servant.
4 The leaders went to Jesus and begged him to do something. They said, “This man deserves your help! 5 He loves our nation and even built us a synagogue.”

6 So Jesus went with them.
When Jesus wasn't far from the house, the officer sent some friends to tell him, “Lord, don't go to any trouble for me! I am not good enough for you to come into my house. 7 And I am certainly not worthy to come to you. Just say the word, and my servant will get well.

8 I have officers who give orders to me, and I have soldiers who take orders from me. I can say to one of them, ‘Go!’ and he goes. I can say to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes. I can say to my servant, ‘Do this!’ and he will do it.”

9 When Jesus heard this, he was so surprised that he turned and said to the crowd following him, “In all of Israel I've never found anyone with this much faith!”

10 The officer's friends returned and found the servant well.

A Widow's Son

12 As they came near the gate of the town, they saw people carrying out the body of a widow's only son. Many people from the town were walking along with her.

13 When the Lord saw the woman, he felt sorry for her and said, “Don't cry!”
14 Jesus went over and touched the stretcher on which the people were carrying the dead boy. They stopped, and Jesus said, “Young man, get up!”

15 The boy sat up and began to speak. Jesus then gave him back to his mother.

16 Everyone was frightened and praised God. They said, “A great prophet is here with us! God has come to his people.”

17 News about Jesus spread all over Judea and everywhere else in that part of the country.

John the Baptist

(Matthew 11.1-19)

18-19 John's followers told John everything that was being said about Jesus. So he sent two of them to ask the Lord, “Are you the one we should be looking for? Or must we wait for someone else?”

20 When these messengers came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask, ‘Are you the one we should be looking for? Or are we supposed to wait for someone else?’ ”
21 At that time Jesus was healing many people who were sick or in pain or were troubled by evil spirits, and he was giving sight to a lot of blind people. 22 t Jesus said to the messengers sent by John, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard. Blind people are now able to see, and the lame can walk. People who have leprosyt are being healed, and the deaf can now hear. The dead are raised to life, and the poor are hearing the good news.

23 God will bless everyone who doesn't reject me because of what I do.”

24 After John's messengers had gone, Jesus began speaking to the crowds about John:
What kind of person did you go out to the desert to see? Was he like tall grass blown about by the wind? 25 What kind of man did you really go out to see? Was he someone dressed in fine clothes? People who wear expensive clothes and live in luxury are in the king's palace. 26 What then did you go out to see? Was he a prophet? He certainly was! I tell you that he was more than a prophet. 27 t In the Scriptures, God calls John his messenger and says, “I am sending my messenger ahead of you to get things ready for you.”

28 No one ever born on this earth is greater than John. But whoever is least important in God's kingdom is greater than John.
29  t Everyone had been listening to John. Even the tax collectorst had obeyed God and had done what was right by letting John baptize them.

30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the Law of Moses refused to obey God and be baptized by John.

31 Jesus went on to say:
What are you people like? What kind of people are you?

32 You are like children sitting in the market and shouting to each other,
“We played the flute,
but you would not dance!
We sang a funeral song,
but you would not cry!”
33 John the Baptist did not go around eating and drinking, and you said, “John has a demon in him!” 34 But because the Son of Man goes around eating and drinking, you say, “Jesus eats and drinks too much! He is even a friend of tax collectors and sinners.”

35 Yet Wisdom is shown to be right by what its followers do.

Simon the Pharisee

36 A Pharisee invited Jesus to have dinner with him. So Jesus went to the Pharisee's home and got ready to eat.t
37  t When a sinful woman in that town found out that Jesus was there, she bought an expensive bottle of perfume.

38 Then she came and stood behind Jesus. She cried and started washing his feet with her tears and drying them with her hair. The woman kissed his feet and poured the perfume on them.

39 The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, “If this man really were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him! He would know that she is a sinner.”

40 Jesus said to the Pharisee, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”
“Teacher, what is it?” Simon replied.
41 Jesus told him, “Two people were in debt to a moneylender. One of them owed him 500 silver coins, and the other owed him 50.

42 Since neither of them could pay him back, the moneylender said that they didn't have to pay him anything. Which one of them will like him more?”

43 Simon answered, “I suppose it would be the one who had owed more and didn't have to pay it back.”
“You are right,” Jesus said.
44 He turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Have you noticed this woman? When I came into your home, you didn't give me any water so I could wash my feet. But she has washed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 45 You didn't greet me with a kiss, but from the time I came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You didn't even pour olive oil on my head, t but she has poured expensive perfume on my feet.

47 So I tell you that all her sins are forgiven, and that is why she has shown great love. But anyone who has been forgiven for only a little will show only a little love.”

48 Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49 Some other guests started saying to one another, “Who is this who dares to forgive sins?”
50 But Jesus told the woman, “Because of your faith, you are now saved.t May God give you peace!”
