De genezing van een verlamde
1 Een tijd later kwam Jezus weer in Kafarnaüm.2 Het duurde niet lang of de hele stad wist dat Hij thuis was en al gauw was het huis overvol. Ook voor de deur stonden vele mensen te luisteren naar wat Jezus vertelde.3 Vier mannen kwamen met een verlamde op een draagbed. Zij wilden naar Jezus toe,4 maar omdat het er zwart zag van de mensen, konden ze niet bij Hem komen. Daarom gingen ze het platte dak op en maakten daarin een groot gat vlak boven de plaats waar Jezus stond. Daarna lieten ze de verlamde man door het gat zakken.
5 Toen Jezus hun geloof zag, zei Hij tegen de verlamde man: ‘Uw zonden zijn vergeven.’
6 Er zaten ook een paar Joodse bijbelgeleerden in dat huis. Toen die dit hoorden, dachten ze bij zichzelf:7 ‘Hoe durft Hij! Hij spot met God! Er is er maar één die de mensen hun zonden kan vergeven en dat is God!’8 Jezus wist wel wat in hen omging en vroeg: ‘Wat gaat er in uw hart om?9 Wat is makkelijker om te zeggen tegen deze verlamde man: “Uw zonden zijn vergeven,” of: “Sta op en loop”?
10 God heeft Mij, de Mensenzoon, de bevoegdheid gegeven zonden te vergeven. Als iemand van Mij vergeving krijgt, hééft hij vergeving gekregen.’
11 Daarop zei Hij tegen de verlamde man: ‘Sta op, neem uw draagbed mee en ga naar huis.’
12 De man sprong overeind, nam zijn bed onder de arm en liep tussen de verblufte omstanders door naar buiten. Er steeg een gejuich op tot eer van God. ‘Zoiets hebben wij nog nooit gezien!’ riepen ze.
Jezus op bezoek bij Levi, de tolontvanger
13 Jezus ging weer naar het meer. Grote groepen mensen kwamen naar Hem toe en luisterden naar wat Hij te zeggen had.
14 Hij kwam langs een tolhuis. De tolontvanger was Levi, de zoon van Alfeüs. Hij zat voor het huis. ‘Kom,’ zei Jezus tegen hem, ‘ga met Mij mee.’ Levi stond meteen op en ging met Hem mee.
15 Die avond aten Jezus en zijn leerlingen bij Levi thuis. Er waren ook veel collega’s van Levi uitgenodigd en nog anderen met een slechte naam. Want van dat soort mensen gingen er veel achter Jezus aan.16 Toen enkele bijbelgeleerden zagen met wie Hij de maaltijd gebruikte, zeiden zij tegen zijn leerlingen: ‘Schaamt Hij Zich niet met dat soort mensen te eten?’
17 Jezus hoorde het en zei tegen hen: ‘Gezonde mensen hebben geen dokter nodig, maar zieke en zwakke mensen wel. Ik ben gekomen om zondaars uit te nodigen, niet degenen die Gods wil al doen.’
Jezus over vasten en de sabbat
18 De leerlingen van Johannes de Doper en de Farizeeën hielden zich aan de gewoonte om te vasten. Op een dag kwamen zij naar Jezus toe en vroegen waarom zijn leerlingen dat niet deden.19 Jezus antwoordde: ‘Waarom zouden de gasten van de bruidegom niet mogen eten? Zolang de bruidegom bij hen is, hebben zij geen reden om niet te eten.20 Maar er komt een tijd dat Hij er niet meer is en dan zullen zij vasten.21 Wie verstelt nu een oude jas met een lap nieuwe stof? Die lap zou immers krimpen en de jas stuktrekken. De scheur zou er alleen maar groter door worden!
22 En wie doet er nu jonge wijn in oude leren zakken? Het leer van oude wijnzakken is hard en stug. Door het gisten van de jonge wijn komen er barsten in. De wijn gaat verloren en de zakken zijn waardeloos. Nee, jonge wijn doet u in nieuwe, soepele wijnzakken.’
23 Op een sabbat (zaterdag, de Joodse rustdag) liep Jezus met zijn leerlingen door de graanvelden. De leerlingen plukten zo nu en dan wat aren en haalden de graankorrels eruit om op te eten.24 Een paar Farizeeën zeiden tegen Jezus: ‘Waarom zegt U daar niets van? U weet toch dat het vandaag sabbat is? Het is een rustdag. Wat zij doen, is verboden.’25 Hij antwoordde: ‘Hebt u nooit gehoord wat David deed toen hij en zijn vrienden honger hadden?26 Hij ging de tempel van God binnen, in de tijd dat Abjathar hogepriester was, en nam het heilige brood mee. Eigenlijk mochten alleen de priesters dat eten. Maar David en zijn vrienden aten het brood toch.27 De sabbat is er voor de mensen, niet de mensen voor de sabbat.
28 Ik, de Mensenzoon, beslis wat op de sabbat wel en niet mag.’

1 And when he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was noised that he was in the house.2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room for them, no, not even about the door: and he spake the word unto them.3 And they come, bringing unto him a man sick of the palsy, borne of four.4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed whereon the sick of the palsy lay.5 And Jesus seeing their faith saith unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins are forgiven.6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,7 Why doth this man thus speak? he blasphemeth: who can forgive sins but one, even God?8 And straightway Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, saith unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?9 Which is easier, to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins are forgiven; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins (he saith to the sick of the palsy),11 I say unto thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thy house.12 And he arose, and straightway took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the place of toll, and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.15 And it came to pass, that he was sitting at meat in his house, and many publicans and sinners sat down with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with the sinners and publicans, said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?17 And when Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.18 And John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting: and they come and say unto him, Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the sons of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then will they fast in that day.21 No man seweth a piece of undressed cloth on an old garment: else that which should fill it up taketh from it, the new from the old, and a worse rent is made.22 And no man putteth new wine into old wineskins; else the wine will burst the skins, and the wine perisheth, and the skins: but they put new wine into fresh wine-skins.23 And it came to pass, that he was going on the sabbath day through the grainfields; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears.24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?25 And he said unto them, Did ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he, and they that were with him?26 How he entered into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the showbread, which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests, and gave also to them that were with him?27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:28 so that the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.
