El ejemplo de las semillas

1 Otro día, Jesús estaba enseñando a la orilla del Lago de Galilea. Como mucha gente se reunió para escucharlo, Jesús tuvo que subir a una barca y sentarse t para hablar desde allí. La gente se quedó de pie en la playa.

2 Jesús les enseñó muchas cosas por medio de ejemplos y comparaciones. Les puso esta comparación:

3 «Escuchen bien esto: Un campesino salió a sembrar trigo.

4 Mientras sembraba, algunas semillas cayeron en el camino. Poco después vinieron unos pájaros y se las comieron.
5 »Otras semillas cayeron en un terreno con muchas piedras y poca tierra. Como la tierra era poco profunda, pronto brotaron plantas de trigo.

6 Pero las plantas no duraron mucho tiempo. Al salir el sol se quemaron, porque no tenían buenas raíces.

7 »Otras semillas cayeron entre espinos. Cuando los espinos crecieron, ahogaron el trigo y no lo dejaron crecer. Por eso, las semillas no produjeron nada.

8 »En cambio, otras semillas cayeron en buena tierra, y sus espigas crecieron muy bien y produjeron una muy buena cosecha. Algunas espigas produjeron treinta semillas, otras sesenta, y otras cien.»

9 Luego Jesús dijo: «¡Si en verdad tienen oídos, presten mucha atención!»

¿Por qué Jesús enseña con ejemplos?

10 Después, cuando ya se había ido casi toda la gente, los que se quedaron con Jesús y los doce discípulos le preguntaron qué significaba el ejemplo del campesino.

11 Jesús les respondió:

«A ustedes les he explicado los secretos del reino de Dios , pero a los demás les enseño solamente por medio de ejemplos.

12 Así, aunque miren, no verán, y aunque oigan, no entenderán, a menos que se arrepientan de sus pecados y pidan perdón a Dios.»

Jesús explica el ejemplo de las semillas

13 Jesús les dijo:

«Si no entienden el ejemplo de las semillas, ¿cómo van a entender los otros ejemplos y comparaciones?
14 »El campesino representa al que anuncia las buenas noticias .

15 Las semillas que cayeron en el camino representan a los que escuchan las buenas noticias, pero luego viene Satanás y hace que olviden todo lo que oyeron.
16 »Las semillas que cayeron entre piedras representan a quienes oyen el mensaje del reino de Dios y rápidamente lo aceptan con gran alegría.

17 Pero como no lo entienden muy bien, la alegría les dura muy poco. Tan pronto como tienen problemas, o son maltratados por ser obedientes a Dios, se olvidan del mensaje.
18 »Hay otros que son como las semillas que cayeron entre los espinos. Oyen el mensaje,

19 pero no dejan que el mensaje cambie su vida. Sólo piensan en las cosas que necesitan, en cómo ganar dinero, y en cómo disfrutar de esta vida.

20 »Finalmente, las semillas que cayeron en buena tierra representan a los que escuchan el mensaje y lo aceptan. Esas personas cambian su vida y hacen lo bueno. Son como las semillas que produjeron espigas con treinta, sesenta y hasta cien semillas.»

El ejemplo de la luz

21 Después de esto, Jesús les dijo:

«¿Se enciende una lámpara para ponerla debajo de un cajón, o debajo de la cama? ¡Claro que no! Se enciende y se pone en un lugar alto, para que alumbre bien.

22 Porque todo lo que esté escondido se descubrirá, y todo lo que se mantenga en secreto llegará a saberse.

23 »Si en verdad tienen oídos, ¡úsenlos!»

24 También les dijo:

«¡Presten mucha atención! Dios les dará a ustedes la misma cantidad que ustedes den a los demás, y mucho más todavía.

25 Porque al que tenga algo, se le dará más; pero al que no tenga nada, se le quitará aun lo poquito que tenga.»

La comparación de la semilla que crece

26 Jesús también les puso esta otra comparación:

«Con el reino de Dios pasa algo parecido a lo que sucede cuando un hombre siembra una semilla en la tierra.27 No importa si ese hombre está dormido o despierto, o si es de noche o de día; la semilla siempre nace y crece sin que el campesino entienda cómo.28 La tierra produce primero el tallo, después la espiga, y finalmente las semillas.

29 Y cuando llega el tiempo de la cosecha, el campesino recoge las semillas.»

La semilla de mostaza

30 Jesús también dijo:

«¿Con qué puede compararse el reino de Dios ? ¿A qué se parece?31 Es como la semilla de mostaza que el campesino siembra en la tierra. A pesar de que es la más pequeña de todas las semillas del mundo,

32 cuando crece llega a ser la más grande de las plantas del huerto. ¡Tiene ramas bien grandes, y hasta los pájaros pueden hacer nidos bajo su sombra!»

Las comparaciones que usaba Jesús

33 Jesús enseñó el mensaje del reino de Dios por medio de muchas comparaciones, de acuerdo con lo que la gente podía entender.

34 Hablaba solamente por medio de comparaciones y ejemplos, pero cuando estaba a solas con sus discípulos les explicaba todo con claridad.

La gran tormenta

35 Ese mismo día, cuando llegó la noche, Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos : «Vamos al otro lado del lago.»

36 Entonces dejaron a la gente y atravesaron el lago en una barca. Algunos fueron también en otras barcas.

37 De pronto se desató una tormenta. El viento soplaba tan fuerte que las olas se metían en la barca, y ésta empezó a llenarse de agua.

38 Entre tanto, Jesús se había quedado dormido en la parte de atrás de la barca, recostado sobre una almohada. Los discípulos lo despertaron y le gritaron:

—Maestro, ¿no te importa que nos estemos hundiendo?

39 Jesús se levantó y ordenó al viento y al mar que se calmaran. Enseguida el viento se calmó, y todo quedó completamente tranquilo.

40 Entonces Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:

—¿Por qué estaban tan asustados? ¿Todavía no confían en mí?

41 Pero ellos estaban muy asombrados, y se decían unos a otros: «¿Quién es este hombre, que hasta el viento y el mar lo obedecen?»

A Story about a Farmer

(Matthew 13.1-9; Luke 8.4-8)

1  t The next time Jesus taught beside Lake Galilee, a big crowd gathered. It was so large that he had to sit in a boat out on the lake, while the people stood on the shore.

2 He used stories to teach them many things, and this is part of what he taught:
3 Now listen! A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field. 4 While the farmer was scattering the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds. 5 Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn't very deep. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have deep roots. 7 Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked out the plants. So they did not produce any grain.

8 But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants grew and produced 30 or 60 or even 100 times as much as was scattered.

9 Then Jesus said, “If you have ears, pay attention.”

Why Jesus Used Stories

(Matthew 13.10-17; Luke 8.9,10)

11 He answered:
I have explained the secret about God's kingdom to you, but for others I can use only stories.

12 t The reason is,
“These people will look
and look, but never see.
They will listen and listen,
but never understand.
If they did,
they would turn to God
and be forgiven.”

Jesus Explains the Story //about the Farmer

(Matthew 13.18-23; Luke 8.11-15)

13 Jesus then told them:
If you don't understand this story, you won't understand any others. 14 What the farmer is spreading is really the message about the kingdom. 15 The seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message. But Satan soon comes and snatches it away from them. 16 The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it at once.

17 But they don't have roots, and they don't last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.
18 The seeds that fell among the thornbushes are also people who hear the message. 19 But they start worrying about the needs of this life. They are fooled by the desire to get rich and to have all kinds of other things. So the message gets choked out, and they never produce anything.

20 The seeds that fell on good ground are the people who hear and welcome the message. They produce 30 or 60 or even 100 times as much as was planted.

Light

(Luke 8.16-18)

21  t Jesus also said:
You don't light a lamp and put it under a clay pot or under a bed. Don't you put a lamp on a lampstand? 22 t There is nothing hidden that will not be made public. There is no secret that will not be well known.

23 If you have ears, pay attention!
24  t Listen carefully to what you hear! The way you treat others will be the way you will be treated—and even worse.

25 t Everyone who has something will be given more. But people who don't have anything will lose what little they have.

Another Story about Seeds

26 Again Jesus said:
God's kingdom is like what happens when a farmer scatters seed in a field. 27 The farmer sleeps at night and is up and around during the day. Yet the seeds keep sprouting and growing, and he doesn't understand how. 28 It is the ground that makes the seeds sprout and grow into plants that produce grain.

29 t Then when harvest season comes and the grain is ripe, the farmer cuts it with a sickle.t

A Mustard Seed

(Matthew 13.31,32; Luke 13.18,19)

30 Finally, Jesus said:
What is God's kingdom like? What story can I use to explain it? 31 It is like what happens when a mustard seed is planted in the ground. It is the smallest seed in all the world.

32 But once it is planted, it grows larger than any garden plant. It even puts out branches that are big enough for birds to nest in its shade.

The Reason for Teaching //with Stories

(Matthew 13.34,35)

34 He did not tell them anything without using stories. But when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them.

A Storm

(Matthew 8.23-27; Luke 8.22-25)

37 Suddenly a storm struck the lake. Waves started splashing into the boat, and it was about to sink.

38 Jesus was in the back of the boat with his head on a pillow, and he was asleep. His disciples woke him and said, “Teacher, don't you care that we're about to drown?”

39 Jesus got up and ordered the wind and the waves to be quiet. The wind stopped, and everything was calm.

40 Jesus asked his disciples, “Why were you afraid? Don't you have any faith?”
41 Now they were more afraid than ever and said to each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
