Matthew 1

1 The family tree of Jesus Christ, David's son, Abraham's son:2-6 Abraham had Isaac, Isaac had Jacob, Jacob had Judah and his brothers, Judah had Perez and Zerah (the mother was Tamar), Perez had Hezron, Hezron had Aram, Aram had Amminadab, Amminadab had Nahshon, Nahshon had Salmon, Salmon had Boaz (his mother was Rahab), Boaz had Obed (Ruth was the mother), Obed had Jesse, Jesse had David, and David became king.

7-11 David had Solomon (Uriah's wife was the mother), Solomon had Rehoboam, Rehoboam had Abijah, Abijah had Asa, Asa had Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat had Joram, Joram had Uzziah, Uzziah had Jotham, Jotham had Ahaz, Ahaz had Hezekiah, Hezekiah had Manasseh, Manasseh had Amon, Amon had Josiah, Josiah had Jehoiachin and his brothers, and then the people were taken into the Babylonian exile.12-16 When the Babylonian exile ended, Jeconiah had Shealtiel, Shealtiel had Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel had Abiud, Abiud had Eliakim, Eliakim had Azor, Azor had Zadok, Zadok had Achim, Achim had Eliud, Eliud had Eleazar, Eleazar had Matthan, Matthan had Jacob, Jacob had Joseph, Mary's husband, the Mary who gave birth to Jesus, the Jesus who was called Christ.17 There were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, another fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and yet another fourteen from the Babylonian exile to Christ.

The Birth of Jesus

18-19 The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn't know that.) Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.

20-23 While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God's angel spoke in the dream: "Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God's Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—'God saves'—because he will save his people from their sins." This would bring the prophet's embryonic sermon to full term:
Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for "God is with us").

24-25 Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God's angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. But he did not consummate the marriage until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus.

1 This is the record of the genealogyt of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
2 Abraham was the fathert of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah (by Tamar), Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,5 Salmon the father of Boaz (by Rahab), Boaz the father of Obed (by Ruth), Obed the father of Jesse,

6 and Jesse the father of David the king.
David was the father of Solomon (by the wife of Uriahs),7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,s8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah,9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon,s Amon the father of Josiah,

11 and Josiahs the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
12 Aftert the deportation to Babylon, Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel,s Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud,15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, by whomsss Jesus was born, who is called Christ.ts

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to Christ,ts fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together,t she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.19 Because Joseph, her husband to be,t was a righteous man, and because he did not want to disgrace her, he intended to divorce herts privately.20 When he had contemplated this, ant angel of the Lordt appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.21 She will give birth to a son and you will name himt Jesus,s because he will save his people from their sins.”22 This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled:23 “Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call himtEmmanuel,”s which meanst “God with us.”s24 When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lordt told him. He took his wife,

25 but did not have marital relationst with her until she gave birth to a son, whom he namedt Jesus.
