Jezus’ opdracht aan zijn leerlingen

1 Jezus riep zijn twaalf leerlingen en gaf hun macht om boze geesten te verjagen en alle ziekten en kwalen te genezen.2 Dit zijn de namen van zijn twaalf apostelen: Simon (ook wel Petrus genoemd) en diens broer Andreas, Jakobus (de zoon van Zebedeüs) en zijn broer Johannes,3 Filippus en Bartholomeüs, Thomas en Mattheüs (de tolontvanger), Jakobus (de zoon van Alfeüs) en Thaddeüs,

5 Jezus stuurde deze twaalf erop uit met de opdracht: ‘Ga niet naar de ongelovigen of de Samaritanen,6 maar alleen naar de verloren schapen van het volk van Israël.7 Vertel hun dat het Koninkrijk van de hemelen vlakbij is.8 Maak zieken gezond. Laat doden weer levend worden. Genees melaatsen. Verdrijf boze geesten. Jullie mogen er niets voor vragen, omdat je het zelf ook voor niets hebt gekregen.9 Neem geen geld mee,10 geen reistas met extra kleren en sandalen. Zelfs geen wandelstok. Want je zult krijgen wat je nodig hebt.11 Wanneer jullie in een stad of dorp komen, zoek dan iemand die het waard is om bij te logeren. Blijf daar tot je weer verder gaat.12 Groet degenen die jullie onderdak verlenen.13 Wens zijn gezin vrede toe, als je er goed wordt ontvangen, maar niet als je er slecht wordt ontvangen.14 Als er huizen of steden zijn waar ze niets van je willen weten, ga dan meteen verder en schud het stof van je voeten af.

15 Werkelijk, zo’n stad zal er op de dag van het grote oordeel erger aan toe zijn dan de beruchte steden Sodom en Gomorra.
16 Ik stuur jullie erop uit als schapen onder wolven. Wees zo slim als slangen, en zo onschuldig als duiven.17 Maar pas op! Men zal jullie voor de rechtbanken brengen en afranselen in de synagogen.18 Jullie moeten terechtstaan voor gouverneurs en koningen, omdat jullie bij Mij horen. Dat zijn kansen om hun over Mij te vertellen en de wereld te laten weten wie Ik ben.19 Als je wordt gearresteerd, hoef je je geen zorgen te maken over wat je moet zeggen. De juiste woorden zullen je op het juiste moment worden ingegeven.20 Dan zijn jullie het niet die spreken. Dan is het de Geest van je hemelse Vader die door je spreekt.21 De ene broer zal de andere ter dood laten brengen. Vaders zullen dat zelfs doen met hun eigen kinderen. Kinderen zullen de hand tegen hun ouders opheffen en hen vermoorden.22 Iedereen zal jullie haten omdat jullie bij Mij horen. Maar wie standhoudt tot het allerlaatst, zal worden gered.

23 Wanneer je in de ene stad wordt vervolgd, vlucht dan naar de andere. Want Ik, de Mensenzoon, zal terugkomen voordat jullie alle steden van Israël hebben bereikt.
24 Een leerling is niet meer dan zijn leraar en een knecht niet meer dan zijn baas.25 Een leerling mag blij zijn als hij zo wordt als zijn leraar, en een knecht als hij wordt als zijn baas. Ze hebben Mij, als de leider, uitgescholden voor Beëlzebul, duivel. Wat zullen zij dan wel van jullie zeggen?26 Maar wees niet bang voor de mensen die je kwaad willen doen. Want wat verborgen is, zal ontdekt worden, en wat geheim is, zal bekend worden.27 Wat Ik nu in het donker zeg, vertel dat rond bij daglicht. Wat Ik je in het oor fluister, schreeuw het van de daken!

28 Wees niet bang voor hen die wel je lichaam kunnen doden, maar niet je ziel. Wees alleen bang voor God die zowel je ziel als je lichaam kan vernietigen in de hel.
29 Geen enkele mus valt op de grond zonder dat je hemelse Vader ervan weet. En wat kost nu een mus? Bijna niets.30 Zelfs de haren op je hoofd zijn allemaal geteld.31 Maak je dus geen zorgen. Jij bent voor God veel meer waard dan een zwerm mussen.32 Als je er bij de mensen openlijk voor uitkomt dat je bij Mij hoort, zal Ik dat ook doen bij mijn hemelse Vader.

33 Maar als je voor de mensen net doet of je Mij niet kent, zal Ik ook tegen mijn hemelse Vader net doen of Ik jou niet ken.
34 Denk niet dat Ik ben gekomen om vrede op aarde te brengen. Nee, eerder een zwaard.35 Ik ben gekomen om verdeeldheid te brengen tussen vader en zoon, tussen moeder en dochter, tussen schoonmoeder en schoondochter.36 Iemands ergste vijanden zullen zijn huisgenoten zijn.37 Wie meer van zijn vader of moeder houdt dan van Mij, is Mij niet waard. En wie meer van zijn zoon of dochter houdt dan van Mij, is Mij niet waard.38 Wie niet zijn kruis op zich neemt en Mij als leerling volgt, is Mij niet waard.39 Wie zijn leven niet wil opgeven, zal het verliezen. Maar wie zijn leven opgeeft voor Mij, zal het behouden.40 Wie jullie ontvangt, ontvangt Mij. En wie Mij ontvangt, ontvangt God die Mij gestuurd heeft.41 Wie een profeet ontvangt omdat hij een knecht van God is, zal dezelfde beloning krijgen als een profeet. Wie een goed man ontvangt omdat hij goed is, zal dezelfde beloning krijgen als hij.

42 En wie een van deze geringe mensen iets te drinken geeft, al is het maar een beker koel water, omdat het een leerling van Mij is, die zal zeker worden beloond.’

Matthew 10

1 And he called unto him his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of disease and all manner of sickness.

2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and charged them, saying, Go not into any way of the Gentiles, and enter not into any city of the Samaritans:6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons: freely ye received, freely give.9 Get you no gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses;10 no wallet for your journey, neither two coats, nor shoes, nor staff: for the laborer is worthy of his food.11 And into whatsoever city or village ye shall enter, search out who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go forth.12 And as ye enter into the house, salute it.13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, as ye go forth out of that house or that city, shake off the dust of your feet.15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.

16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to councils, and in theirs synagogues they will scourge you;18 yea and before governors and kings shall ye be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.19 But when they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what ye shall speak.20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.21 And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child: and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone through the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

24 A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his lord.25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his teacher, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his household!26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.27 What I tell you in the darkness, speak ye in the light; and what ye hear in the ear, proclaim upon the house-tops.28 And be not afraid of them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father:30 but the very hairs of your head are all numbered.31 Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.32 Every one therefore who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven.33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven.

34 Think not that I came to send peace on the earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.35 For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law:36 and a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.38 And he that doth not take his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.39 He that findeth his life shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward: and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you he shall in no wise lose his reward.
