Matteo 12

Il Padrone del Sabato.

1 In quello stesso periodo, Gesù stava passando con i suoi discepoli attraverso alcuni campi di grano. Era di sabato, il giorno sacro ai Giudei. I discepoli avevano fame, così cominciarono a cogliere le spighe di grano ed a mangiarne i chicchi.2 Ma alcuni Farisei li videro e protestarono: « I tuoi discepoli stanno con-trav-ve-nen-do alla legge », dissero a Gesù, « perché raccolgono il grano di sabato! »3 Ma Gesù rispose: « Avete mai letto nelle Scritture che cosa fecero il re Davide e i suoi compagni quando ebbero fame?4 Entrarono nel tempio e mangiarono il pane speciale che soltanto i sacerdoti potevano mangiare. Anche quella fu una infrazione alla legge.5 E non avete mai letto nei libri della legge di Mosè che i sacerdoti di servizio al tempio possono lavorare anche di sabato?6 Ebbene io vi assicuro che qui c’è qualcuno ben più importante del tempio!7 Ma se aveste conosciuto il significato di questo versetto della Scrittura, “Voglio da voi più misericordia che sacrifici”, non avreste condannato degli uomini innocenti.8 Perché io, il Messia, sono padrone anche del sabato! »9 Poi Gesù si recò alla sinagoga,10 dove vide un uomo con una mano paralizzata. I Farisei chiesero a Gesù: « Secondo la nostra legge, è lecito guarire i malati di sabato? » (Naturalmente speravano che rispondesse di sì, così avrebbero potuto arrestarlo).11 Gesù allora rispose: « Se aveste soltanto una pecora e vi cadesse nel pozzo proprio di sabato, non vi mettereste al lavoro per salvarla quel giorno stesso? Certamente sì!12 E un uomo non vale di più di una pecora? Dunque è lecito fare del bene a qualcuno anche se è sabato ».13 Poi disse all’uomo: « Stendi la mano! » Quello ubbidì e la mano paralizzata tornò normale come l’altra.14 Allora i Farisei si riunirono per tramare l’arresto e la morte di Gesù.15 Ma egli seppe ciò che stavano progettando e lasciò la sinagoga. Molti lo seguirono ed egli guarì tutti i malati,16 raccomandando, però, severamente di non raccontare a nessuno i suoi miracoli.17 Con questo si avverava la profezia d’Isaia che si riferiva: a lui:18 « Ecco il mio servo. Quello che io ho scelto. In Lui mi sono compiaciuto. Io metterò il mio spirito sopra di lui, ed annuncerà la salvezza a tutti i popoli.19 Non discuterà, né griderà e nemmeno terrà discorsi nelle piazze.20 Non spezzerà una canna incrinata né spegnerà uno stoppino dalla fiamma smorta.21 Sarà lui la speranza di tutto il mondo ».22 Poi fu portato a Gesù un indemoniato, cieco e muto. Gesù lo guarì e l’uomo poté parlare e vedere.23 La folla era meravigliata. « Forse Gesù è il Messia! » dicevano tutti.24 Ma, quando i Farisei seppero del miracolo, insinuarono: « E’ soltanto con l’aiuto di Beelzebùl, il principe dei demoni, che egli scaccia i demoni ».25 Gesù, conoscendo i loro pensieri, rispose: « Un regno diviso finisce in rovina. Una città o una famiglia divisa dai litigi non possono durare.26 Dunque se Satana scaccia Satana, combatte contro se stesso e distrugge il proprio regno.27 Se, come sostenete voi, io scaccio i demoni, invocando le potenze di Satana, allora con l’aiuto di chi li scacciano i vostri seguaci? Perciò saranno proprio loro a giudicarvi per questo.28 Ma se invece io scaccio i demoni con lo Spirito di Dio, allora vuol dire che il Regno di Dio è arrivato fra voi.29 Non si può entrare nella casa di un uomo forte e portar via i suoi beni senza prima aver legato quell’uomo forte: solo così può essere derubato.30 Chi non è con me è contro di me, chi non raccoglie con me, disperde il raccolto.31-32 Perfino la bestemmia contro di me o qualsiasi altro peccato può essere perdonato, tutti i peccati eccetto uno: quello contro lo Spirito Santo. Questo peccato non sarà mai perdonato, né in questo mondo, né in quello che verrà.33 Un albero si riconosce dai frutti. Un albero buono produce buoni frutti; mentre un albero cattivo darà frutti scadenti.34 Perciò, razza di serpenti, come potete dire cose buone, voi che siete tanto cattivi? Perché dalla bocca esce ciò che si ha nel cuore.35 I discorsi di un uomo buono rivelano i ricchi tesori che sono dentro di lui. Un uomo dal cuore malvagio è, invece, pieno di veleno, e lo si capisce dalle sue parole.36 Aggiungo questo nel giorno del giudizio dovrete rendere conto di ogni parola inutile.37 Dalle vostre parole di ora dipende la vostra sorte futura: proprio da esse sarete giustificati o condannati ».

« Dacci una prova! »

38 Un giorno, dei capi Giudei, fra cui alcuni Farisei, si presentarono a Gesù per chiedergli di fare un miracolo per provare che egli era realmente il Messia.39-40 Ma Gesù rispose: « Soltanto un popolo malvagio e senza fede come questo mi avrebbe chiesto un’altra prova, ma nulla vi sarà dato, eccetto il segno del profeta Giona. Perché, come Giona rimase dentro al grosso pesce tre giorni e tre notti, così io, il Messia, resterò sepolto nel cuore della terra tre giorni e tre notti.41 Nel giorno del giudizio gli abitanti di Ninive si leveranno contro questo paese e lo condanneranno. Perché, quando Giona predicò, essi si pentirono e, lasciata la cattiva strada, si convertirono a Dio. Ora qualcuno ben più grande di Giona è qui, davanti a voi, e invece voi non volete credergli!42 Nel giorno del giudizio la regina di Saba si leverà contro questo popolo e lo condannerà, perché ella venne da una terra lontana per udire la saggezza di Salomone. Ed ora qui davanti a voi c’è qualcuno ben più grande di Salomone e voi non volete credergli!43-45 Questo popolo malvagio è come un uomo posseduto da un demonio. Un giorno il demonio lo lascia e se ne va nel deserto per un po’ a cercare riposo, ma non lo trova, allora pensa: “Rientrerò nella casa da cui sono uscito”. Vi ritorna e la trova libera, pulita e ordinata! Allora il diavolo va a prendere altri sette spiriti peggiori di lui e poi tutti insieme entrano in quell’uomo e ci restano. Così la condizione dell’uomo è peggiore di quella di prima ».46-47 Mentre Gesù parlava in una casa piena di gente, sua madre e i suoi fratelli aspettavano fuori per parlargli. Quando qualcuno gli disse che erano là,48 Gesù disse: « Chi è mia madre? Chi sono i miei fratelli? »49 Poi, indicando i suoi discepoli, disse: « Guardate: questi sono mia madre e i miei fratelli! »50 Poi aggiunse: « Tutti quelli che ubbidiscono a mio Padre che è in cielo sono miei fratelli, mie sorelle e mia madre! »

Matthew 12

1 At that season Jesus went on the sabbath day through the grainfields; and his disciples were hungry and began to pluck ears and to eat.2 But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which it is not lawful to do upon the sabbath.3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they that were with him;4 how he entered into the house of God, and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them that were with him, but only for the priests?5 Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless?6 But I say unto you, that one greater than the temple is here.7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.8 For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.

9 And he departed thence, and went into their synagogue:10 and behold, a man having a withered hand. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? that they might accuse him.11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be of you, that shall have one sheep, and if this fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?12 How much then is a man of more value than a sheep! Wherefore it is lawful to do good on the sabbath day.13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, as the other.14 But the Pharisees went out, and took counsel against him, how they might destroy him.

15 And Jesus perceiving it withdrew from thence: and many followed him; and he healed them all,16 and charged them that they should not make him known:17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

18 Behold, my servant whom I have chosen; My beloved in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my Spirit upon him, And he shall declare judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He shall not strive, nor cry aloud; Neither shall any one hear his voice in the streets.

20 A bruised reed shall he not break, And smoking flax shall he not quench, Till he send forth judgment unto victory.

21 And in his name shall the Gentiles hope.

22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a demon, blind and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the dumb man spake and saw.23 And all the multitudes were amazed, and said, Can this be the son of David?24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This man doth not cast out demons, but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons.25 And knowing their thoughts he said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:26 and if Satan casteth out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then shall his kingdom stand?27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.28 But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you.29 Or how can one enter into the house of the strong man, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.30 He that is not with me is against me, and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.31 Therefore I say unto you, Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.32 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in that which is to come.33 Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by its fruit.34 Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.35 The good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth good things: and the evil man out of his evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.36 And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

38 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee.39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet:40 for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.41 The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.43 But the unclean spirit, when he is gone out of the man, passeth through waterless places, seeking rest, and findeth it not.44 Then he saith, I will return into my house whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this evil generation.

46 While he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him.47 And one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, seeking to speak to thee.48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?49 And he stretched forth his hand towards his disciples, and said, Behold, my mother and my brethren!50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.
