씨 뿌리는 사람의 비유

(막 4:1-9; 눅 8:4-8)

1 그 날 예수께서 집에서 나오셔서, 바닷가에 앉으셨다. 2 많은 무리가 모여드니, 예수께서는 배에 올라가서 앉으셨다. 무리는 모두 물가에 서 있었다. 3 예수께서 그들에게 비유로 여러 가지 일을 말씀하셨다. 그는 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “보아라, 씨를 뿌리는 사람이 씨를 뿌리러 나갔다. 4 그가 씨를 뿌리는데, 더러는 길가에 떨어지니, 새들이 와서, 그것을 쪼아먹었다. 5 또 더러는 흙이 많지 않은 돌짝밭에 떨어지니, 흙이 깊지 않아서 싹은 곧 났지만, 6 해가 뜨자 타버리고, 뿌리가 없어서 말라버렸다. 7 또 더러는 가시덤불에 떨어지니, 가시덤불이 자라서 그 기운을 막았다. 8 그러나 더러는 좋은 땅에 떨어져서 열매를 맺었는데, 어떤 것은 백 배가 되고, 어떤 것은 육십 배가 되고, 어떤 것은 삼십 배가 되었다. 9 t귀 있는 사람은 들어라.”

비유로 말씀하신 목적

(막 4:10-12; 눅 8:9-10)

10 제자들이 다가와서 예수께 말했다. “어찌하여 그들에게는 비유로 말씀하십니까?” 11 예수께서 그들에게 대답하셨다. “너희에게는 하늘 나라의 비밀을 아는 것을 허락해 주셨지만, 다른 사람들에게는 그렇게 해주지 않으셨다. 12 가진 사람은 더 받아서 차고 남을 것이며, 가지지 못한 사람은 가진 것마저 빼앗길 것이다. 13 내가 그들에게 비유로 말하는 이유는, 그들이 보아도 보지 못하고, 들어도 듣지도 못하고 깨닫지도 못하기 때문이다. 14 이사야의 예언이 그들에게서 이루어지는 것이다. t‘너희가 듣기는 들어도 깨닫지 못하고, 보기는 보아도 알아보지 못할 것이다.

15 이 백성의 마음이 무디어지고 귀가 먹고 눈이 감기어 있다. 이는 그들로 하여금 눈으로 보지 못하게 하고 귀로 듣지 못하게 하고 마음으로 깨닫지 못하게 하고 돌아서지 못하게 하여, 내가 그들을 고쳐 주지 않으려는 것이다.’

16 그러나 너희의 눈은 지금 보고 있으니 복이 있으며, 너희의 귀는 지금 듣고 있으니 복이 있다. 17 그러므로 내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 많은 예언자와 의인이 너희가 지금 보고 있는 것을 보고 싶어하였으나 보지 못하였고, 너희가 지금 듣고 있는 것을 듣고 싶어하였으나 듣지 못하였다.”

비유를 해설하시다

(막 4:13-20; 눅 8:11-15)

18 “너희는 이제 씨를 뿌리는 사람의 비유가 무슨 뜻을 지녔는지를 들어라. 19 누구든지 하늘 나라를 두고 하는 말씀을 듣고도 깨닫지 못하면, 악한 자가 와서, 그 마음에 뿌려진 것을 빼앗아 간다. 길가에 뿌린 씨는 그런 사람을 두고 하는 말이다. 20 또 돌짝밭에 뿌린 씨는 이런 사람이다. 그는 말씀을 듣고, 곧 기쁘게 받아들이기는 하지만, 21 그 속에 뿌리가 없어서 오래 가지 못하고, 말씀 때문에 환난이나 박해가 일어나면, 곧 걸려 넘어진다. 22 또 가시덤불 속에 뿌린 씨는 이런 사람이다. 그는 말씀을 듣기는 하지만, 세상의 염려와 재물의 유혹이 말씀을 막아, 열매를 맺지 못한다. 23 그런데 좋은 땅에 뿌린 씨는 말씀을 듣고서 깨닫는 사람을 두고 하는 말인데, 이 사람이야말로 열매를 맺되, 백 배 혹은 육십 배 혹은 삼십 배의 결실을 낸다.”

밀과 가라지의 비유

24  예수께서 또 다른 비유를 들어서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “하늘 나라는 자기 밭에다가 좋은 씨를 뿌리는 t사람과 같다. 25 사람들이 잠자는 동안에 원수가 와서, 밀 가운데에 t가라지를 뿌리고 갔다. 26 밀이 줄기가 나서 열매를 맺을 때에, 가라지도 보였다. 27 그래서 주인의 종들이 와서, 그에게 말하였다. ‘주인 어른, 어른께서 밭에 좋은 씨를 뿌리지 않으셨습니까? 그런데 가라지가 어디에서 생겼습니까?’ 28 주인이 종들에게 말하기를 ‘원수가 그렇게 하였구나’ 하였다. 종들이 주인에게 말하기를 ‘그러면 우리가 가서, 그것들을 뽑아 버릴까요?’ 하였다. 29 그러나 주인은 이렇게 대답하였다. ‘아니다. 가라지를 뽑다가, 가라지와 함께 밀까지 뽑으면, 어떻게 하겠느냐? 30 추수 때까지 둘 다 함께 자라도록 내버려 두어라. 추수할 때에, 내가 추수꾼에게, 먼저 가라지를 뽑아 단으로 묶어서 불태워 버리고, 밀은 내 곳간에 거두어들이라고 하겠다.’”

겨자씨와 누룩의 비유

(막 4:30-32; 눅 13:18-21)

31  예수께서 또 다른 비유를 들어서, 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “하늘 나라는 t겨자씨와 같다. 어떤 사람이 그것을 가져다가, 자기 밭에 심었다. 32 겨자씨는 어떤 씨보다 더 작은 것이지만, 자라면 어떤 풀보다 더 커져서 나무가 된다. 그리하여 공중의 새들이 와서, 그 가지에 깃들인다.” 33  예수께서 또 다른 비유를 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “하늘 나라는 t누룩과 같다. 어떤 여자가 그것을 가져다가, 가루 서 말 속에 살짝 t섞어 넣으니, 마침내 온통 부풀어올랐다.”

비유로 말씀하시다

(막 4:33-34)

34  예수께서 이 모든 것을 비유로 무리에게 말씀하셨다. 비유가 아니고서는, 아무것도 그들에게 말씀하지 않으셨다. 35 이것은 t예언자를 시켜서 하신 말씀을 이루시려는 것이었다. t“나는 내 입을 열어서 비유로 말할 터인데, 창세 이래로 숨겨 둔 것을 털어놓을 것이다.”

가라지 비유를 설명하시다

36 그 뒤에 예수께서 무리를 떠나서, 집으로 들어가셨다. 제자들이 그에게 다가와서 말하였다. “밭의 가라지 비유를 우리에게 설명하여 주십시오.” 37 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “좋은 씨를 뿌리는 이는 인자요, 38 밭은 세상이다. 좋은 씨는 그 나라의 자녀들이요, 가라지는 악한 자의 자녀들이다. 39 가라지를 뿌린 원수는 악마요, 추수 때는 세상 끝 날이요, 추수꾼은 천사들이다. 40 가라지를 모아다가 불에 태워 버리는 것과 같이, 세상 끝 날에도 그렇게 할 것이다. 41 인자가 천사들을 보낼 터인데, 그들은 죄짓게 하는 모든 일들과 불법을 행하는 모든 사람들을 자기 나라에서 모조리 끌어 모아다가, 42 불 아궁이에 쳐 넣을 것이다. 그러면 그들은 거기서 울며 이를 갈 것이다. 43 그 때에 의인들은 그들의 아버지의 나라에서 해와 같이 빛날 것이다. t귀 있는 사람은 들어라.”

세 가지 비유

44 “하늘 나라는, 밭에 숨겨 놓은 t보물과 같다. 어떤 사람이 그것을 발견하면, 제자리에 숨겨 두고, 기뻐하며 집에 돌아가서는, 가진 것을 다 팔아서 그 밭을 산다.” 45 “또 하늘 나라는, 좋은 진주를 구하는 t상인과 같다. 46 그가 값진 진주 하나를 발견하면, 가서, 가진 것을 다 팔아서 그것을 산다.” 47 “또 하늘 나라는, 바다에 그물을 던져서 온갖 고기를 잡아 올리는 것과 같다. 48 그물이 가득 차면, 해변에 끌어올려 놓고 앉아서, 좋은 것들은 그릇에 담고, 나쁜 것들은 내버린다. 49 세상 끝 날에도 이렇게 할 것이다. 천사들이 와서, 의인들 사이에서 악한 자들을 가려내서, 50 그들을 불 아궁이에 쳐 넣을 것이니, 그들은 거기서 울며 이를 갈 것이다.”

새 것과 낡은 것

51  예수께서 제자들에게 “너희가 이것들을 모두 깨달았느냐?” 하고 물으시니, 그들이 “예” 하고 대답하였다. 52 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “그러므로, 하늘 나라를 위하여 훈련을 받은 율법학자는 누구나, 자기 곳간에서 새 것과 낡은 것을 꺼내는 집주인과 같다.” 53 예수께서 이 비유들을 말씀하신 뒤에, 그 곳을 떠나셨다.

고향 나사렛에서 배척을 받으시다

(막 6:1-6; 눅 4:16-30)

54  예수께서 자기 고향에 가셔서, t회당에서 t사람들을 가르치셨다. 사람들은 놀라서 말하였다. “이 사람이 어디에서 이런 지혜와 그 놀라운 능력을 얻었을까? 55 이 사람은 목수의 아들이 아닌가? 그의 어머니는 마리아라고 하는 분이 아닌가? 그의 아우들은 야고보와 요셉과 시몬과 유다가 아닌가? 56 또 그의 누이들은 모두 우리와 같이 살고 있지 않은가? 그런데 이 사람이 이 모든 것을 어디에서 얻었을까?” 57 그래서 그들은 예수를 달갑지 않게 여겼다. 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “예언자는 자기 고향과 자기 집 밖에서는 존경을 받지 않는 법이 없다.” 58 예수께서는 그들의 믿지 않음 때문에, 거기서는 기적을 많이 행하지 않으셨다.

A Story about a Farmer

(Mark 4.1-9; Luke 8.4-8)

1 That same day Jesus left the house and went out beside Lake Galilee, where he sat down to teach.t 2 t Such large crowds gathered around him that he had to sit in a boat, while the people stood on the shore.

3 Then he taught them many things by using stories. He said:
A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field. 4 While the farmer was scattering the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds. 5 Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn't very deep. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have deep roots. 7 Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked the plants. 8 But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants produced 100 or 60 or 30 times as much as was scattered.

9 If you have ears, pay attention!

Why Jesus Used Stories

(Mark 4.10-12; Luke 8.9,10)

10 Jesus' disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you use stories to speak to the people?”

11 Jesus answered:
I have explained the secrets about the kingdom of heaven to you, but not to others. 12 t Everyone who has something will be given more. But people who don't have anything will lose even what little they have. 13 I use stories when I speak to them because when they look, they cannot see, and when they listen, they cannot hear or understand.

14 t So God's promise came true, just as the prophet Isaiah had said,
“These people will listen
and listen,
but never understand.
They will look and look,
but never see.

15 All of them have
stubborn minds!
They refuse to listen;
they cover their eyes.
They cannot see or hear
or understand.
If they could,
they would turn to me,
and I would heal them.”
16  t But God has blessed you, because your eyes can see and your ears can hear!

17 Many prophets and good people were eager to see what you see and to hear what you hear. But I tell you they did not see or hear.

Jesus Explains the Story //about the Farmer

(Mark 4.13-20; Luke 8.11-15)

18 Now listen to the meaning of the story about the farmer:
19 The seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message about the kingdom, but don't understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches the message from their hearts. 20 The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it at once.

21 But they don't have deep roots, and they don't last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.
22 The seeds that fell among the thornbushes are also people who hear the message. But they start worrying about the needs of this life and are fooled by the desire to get rich. So the message gets choked out, and they never produce anything.

23 The seeds that fell on good ground are the people who hear and understand the message. They produce as much as 100 or 60 or 30 times what was planted.

Weeds among the Wheat

24 Jesus then told them this story:
The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a farmer scattered good seed in a field.

25 But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and scattered weed seeds in the field and then left.
26 When the plants came up and began to mature, the farmer's servants could see the weeds.

27 The servants came and asked, “Sir, didn't you scatter good seed in your field? Where did these weeds come from?”

28 “An enemy did this,” he replied.
His servants then asked, “Do you want us to go out and pull up the weeds?”
29 “No!” he answered. “You might also pull up the wheat.

30 Leave the weeds alone until harvest time. Then I'll tell my workers to gather the weeds and tie them up and burn them. But I'll order them to store the wheat in my barn.”

Stories about a Mustard Seed //and Yeast

(Mark 4.30-32; Luke 13.18-21)

31 Jesus told them another story:
The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a farmer plants a mustard seed in a field.

32 Although it is the smallest of all seeds, it grows larger than any garden plant and becomes a tree. Birds even come and nest on its branches.

33 Jesus also said:
The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a woman mixes a little yeast into three big batches of flour. Finally, all the dough rises.

The Reason for Teaching //with Stories

(Mark 4.33,34)

34 Jesus used stories when he spoke to the people. In fact, he did not tell them anything without using stories.

35 t So God's promise came true, just as the prophett had said,
“I will use stories
to speak my message
and to explain things hidden
since the creation
of the world.”

Jesus Explains the Story //about the Weeds

36 After Jesus left the crowd and went inside, t his disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the story about the weeds in the wheat field.”

37 Jesus answered:
The one who scattered the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seeds are the people who belong to the kingdom. The weeds are those who belong to the evil one,

39 and the one who scattered them is the devil. The harvest is the end of time, and angels are the ones who bring in the harvest.
40 Weeds are gathered and burned. That's how it will be at the end of time. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather from his kingdom everyone who does wrong or causes others to sin. 42 Then he will throw them into a flaming furnace, where people will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

43 t But everyone who has done right will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. If you have ears, pay attention!

A Hidden Treasure

44 The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when someone finds a treasure hidden in a field and buries it again. Such a person is happy and goes and sells everything in order to buy that field.

A Valuable Pearl

45 The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a shop owner is looking for fine pearls.

46 After finding a very valuable one, the owner goes and sells everything in order to buy that pearl.

A Fish Net

47 The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a net is thrown into a lake and catches all kinds of fish. 48 When the net is full, it is dragged to the shore, and the fishermen sit down to separate the fish. They keep the good ones, but throw the bad ones away. 49 That's how it will be at the end of time. Angels will come and separate the evil people from the ones who have done right.

50 Then those evil people will be thrown into a flaming furnace, where they will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

New and Old Treasures

51 Jesus asked his disciples if they understood all these things. They said, “Yes, we do.”

52 So he told them, “Every student of the Scriptures who becomes a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like someone who brings out new and old treasures from the storeroom.”

The People of Nazareth Turn //against Jesus

(Mark 6.1-6; Luke 4.16-30)

53 When Jesus had finished telling these stories, he left 54 and went to his hometown. He taught in their synagogue, and the people were so amazed that they asked, “Where does he get all this wisdom and the power to work these miracles? 55 Isn't he the son of the carpenter? Isn't Mary his mother, and aren't James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas his brothers? 56 Don't his sisters still live here in our town? How can he do all this?”

57 t So the people were upset because of what he was doing.
But Jesus said, “Prophets are honored by everyone, except the people of their hometown and their own family.” 58 And because the people did not have any faith, Jesus did not work many miracles there.
