El ejemplo de las semillas

1 Ese mismo día, Jesús salió de la casa donde estaba, fue a la orilla del Lago de Galilea, y allí se sentó para enseñar. t

2 Como mucha gente llegó a escucharlo, tuvo que subir a una barca y sentarse para enseñar desde allí. La gente permaneció de pie en la playa.

3 Jesús les enseñó muchas cosas por medio de ejemplos y comparaciones. Les puso esta comparación:

4 «Un campesino salió a sembrar trigo. Mientras sembraba, algunas semillas cayeron en el camino. Poco después vinieron unos pájaros y se las comieron.
5 »Otras semillas cayeron en un terreno con muchas piedras y poca tierra. Allí pronto brotaron plantas de trigo, pues la tierra era poco profunda.

6 Pero las plantas no vivieron mucho tiempo porque no tenían buenas raíces, y se quemaron cuando salió el sol.

7 »Otras semillas cayeron entre espinos. Cuando los espinos crecieron, apretaron las espigas de trigo y no las dejaron crecer.

8 »Pero otras semillas cayeron en tierra buena y produjeron una cosecha muy buena. En algunos casos, las semillas sembradas produjeron espigas con cien semillas, otras produjeron espigas con sesenta semillas, y otras produjeron espigas con treinta semillas.

9 »¡Ustedes, si en verdad tienen oídos, presten mucha atención!»

¿Por qué Jesús enseña con ejemplos?

10 Los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron:

—¿Por qué enseñas a la gente por medio de ejemplos?

11 Jesús les dijo:

«A ustedes yo les permito conocer los secretos del reino de Dios , pero no a los demás.12 Porque a los que saben algo acerca de los secretos del reino, se les permite saber mucho más. Pero a los que no saben mucho de los secretos del reino, Dios les hará que olviden aun lo poquito que saben.13 Yo enseño a la gente por medio de ejemplos; así, por más que miren, no verán nada, y por más que oigan, tampoco entenderán nada.

14 Así se cumple en ellos lo que Dios había dicho por medio del profeta Isaías:

“Esta gente,
por más que escuche,
nunca entenderá;
y por más que mire,
nunca verá.

15 Pues no aprende ni piensa,
sino que cierra los ojos para no ver,
y se tapa los oídos para no oír.
Si hiciera lo contrario,
entendería mi mensaje,
cambiaría su manera de vivir,
¡y yo la salvaría !”

16 »Pero a ustedes, mis discípulos, Dios los ha bendecido , porque ven y escuchan mi mensaje.

17 Muchos profetas y mucha gente buena hubieran querido ver lo que ustedes ven y oyen, pero no pudieron.

Jesús explica el ejemplo de las semillas

18 »Ahora, pongan atención y les diré lo que significa el ejemplo del campesino.

19 Hay algunos que escuchan el mensaje del reino de Dios , pero como no lo entienden, el diablo viene y hace que lo olviden. Éstos son como las semillas que cayeron junto al camino.
20 »Las semillas que cayeron entre piedras representan a los que oyen el mensaje del reino de Dios, y lo aceptan rápidamente y con gran alegría,

21 pero como no entienden muy bien el mensaje, su alegría dura muy poco. Cuando tienen problemas, o los maltratan por ser obedientes a Dios, enseguida se olvidan del mensaje.

22 »Luego están las semillas que cayeron entre los espinos. Estas semillas representan a los que oyen el mensaje, pero no dejan que el mensaje cambie sus vidas. Sólo piensan en lo que necesitan y en cómo hacerse ricos.

23 »Finalmente, las semillas que cayeron en buena tierra representan a los que oyen el mensaje y lo entienden. Éstos sí cambian sus vidas y hacen lo bueno. Son como esas semillas que produjeron espigas con cien, con sesenta, y hasta con treinta semillas.»

La mala hierba y el trigo

24 Jesús les puso este otro ejemplo:

«En el reino de Dios sucede lo mismo que le pasó a uno que sembró, en su terreno, muy buenas semillas de trigo.

25 Mientras todos dormían, llegó su enemigo y, entre las semillas de trigo, sembró semillas de una mala hierba llamada cizaña, y después se fue.
26 »Cuando las semillas de trigo produjeron espigas, los trabajadores se dieron cuenta de que también había crecido cizaña.

27 Entonces fueron a donde estaba el dueño del terreno, y le dijeron: “Señor, si usted sembró buenas semillas de trigo, ¿por qué también creció la cizaña?”

28 »El dueño les dijo: “Esto lo hizo mi enemigo”.
»Los trabajadores le preguntaron: “¿Quiere que vayamos a arrancar la mala hierba?”
29 »El dueño les dijo: “¡No! El trigo y la cizaña se parecen mucho, y a lo mejor ustedes van y arrancan el trigo junto con la cizaña.

30 Mejor dejen que las dos plantas crezcan juntas. Cuando llegue el tiempo de la cosecha, podremos distinguir cuál es el trigo y cuál es la cizaña. Entonces enviaré a los trabajadores para que arranquen primero la cizaña, la amontonen y la quemen. Luego recogerán el trigo y lo llevarán a mi granero.”»

La semilla de mostaza

31-32 Jesús también les hizo esta comparación:

«Con el reino de Dios pasa algo parecido a lo que sucede con la semilla de mostaza. A pesar de ser muy pequeña, cuando un hombre la siembra en su terreno, crece hasta convertirse en la más grande de las plantas del huerto. Llega a ser tan grande como un árbol, y hasta los pájaros hacen nidos en sus ramas.»

La levadura

33 Jesús les puso una comparación más:

«Con el reino de Dios pasa lo mismo que con la harina. Cuando una mujer pone en ella un poquito de levadura , ese poquito hace crecer toda la masa.»

Jesús cumple lo dicho por medio de un profeta

34 Jesús le enseñó todo esto a la gente por medio de ejemplos y comparaciones, y sólo así enseñaba.

35 De esa manera, Jesús cumplía lo que Dios había dicho por medio del profeta :

«Hablaré a la gente
por medio de ejemplos,
y contaré cosas
que Dios ha tenido en secreto
desde que hizo el mundo.»

Jesús explica el ejemplo de la cizaña

36 Jesús dejó a la gente allí y se fue a la casa. Entonces sus discípulos fueron a decirle:

—Explícanos qué significa el ejemplo de la mala hierba en el terreno.

37 Jesús les dijo:

«El que siembra la buena semilla de trigo soy yo, el Hijo del hombre .38 El terreno es el mundo, y las buenas semillas de trigo son todos los que obedecen las leyes del reino de Dios . Las semillas de cizaña son los que obedecen al diablo,39 que fue quien las sembró en el mundo. El tiempo de la cosecha es el juicio final, y los trabajadores que recogen la cosecha son los ángeles .40 Cuando Dios juzgue a todos, será como cuando se arranca la mala hierba y se quema.41 Yo, el Hijo del hombre, enviaré a mis ángeles para que saquen de mi reino a todos los que hacen lo malo y obligan a otros a hacerlo.42 A esas personas, los ángeles las echarán en el infierno , y allí tendrán tanto miedo que llorarán y les rechinarán los dientes.

43 Pero los que obedecen a Dios brillarán en el reino del Padre como brilla el sol. ¡Ustedes, si en verdad tienen oídos, presten atención!

El tesoro escondido

44 »Con el reino de Dios pasa lo mismo que con un tesoro escondido en un terreno. Cuando alguien lo encuentra, lo vuelve a esconder; y después va muy alegre a vender todo lo que tiene para comprar el terreno y quedarse con el tesoro.

La joya fina

45 »El reino de Dios también se parece a un comerciante que compra joyas finas.

46 Cuando encuentra una joya muy valiosa, vende todo lo que tiene, y va y la compra.

La red de pescar

47 »El reino de Dios se parece a una red de pescar. Los pescadores echan la red al mar, y en ella recogen toda clase de peces.48 Cuando la red ya está llena, la sacan a la orilla y se sientan a separar el pescado bueno del malo. Guardan el pescado bueno en una canasta, y tiran el pescado malo.49 Así también sucederá cuando llegue el fin del mundo: Los ángeles saldrán a separar a las personas buenas de las malas.

50 A las malas las echarán en el infierno , y allí tendrán tanto horror que llorarán y les rechinarán los dientes.»

Cosas nuevas y cosas viejas

51 Jesús les preguntó a sus discípulos :

—¿Entienden ustedes todas estas enseñanzas?

Ellos contestaron:

—Sí, las entendemos.

52 Jesús les dijo:

—Todo maestro de la Ley que se convierte en discípulo del reino de Dios , se parece al que va a su bodega, y de allí saca cosas nuevas y cosas viejas.

Jesús viaja a Nazaret

53 Cuando Jesús terminó de enseñar con estos ejemplos, se fue de allí.

54 Llegó a su pueblo y comenzó a enseñar en la sinagoga . La gente estaba tan sorprendida que algunos decían: «¿Dónde aprendió este hombre tantas cosas? ¿Cómo puede hacer esos milagros ?»
Otros decían:55 «Pero, ¡si es Jesús, el hijo de José, el carpintero! Su madre es María, y sus hermanos son Santiago, José, Simón y Judas.

56 Sus hermanas aún viven aquí. ¿Cómo es que Jesús sabe tanto y puede hacer estos milagros?»

57 Pero ninguno de los que estaban allí quiso aceptar las enseñanzas de Jesús. Entonces él dijo: «A un profeta se le respeta en todas partes, menos en su propio pueblo y en su propia familia.»

58 Y como la gente no creía en él, Jesús no hizo muchos milagros en aquel lugar.

MATTHEW 13

A Story about a Farmer

(Mark 4.1-9; Luke 8.4-8)

1 That same day Jesus left the house and went out beside Lake Galilee, where he sat down to teach.t 2 t Such large crowds gathered around him that he had to sit in a boat, while the people stood on the shore.

3 Then he taught them many things by using stories. He said:
A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field. 4 While the farmer was scattering the seed, some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds. 5 Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started growing because the soil wasn't very deep. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up, because they did not have deep roots. 7 Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked the plants. 8 But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants produced 100 or 60 or 30 times as much as was scattered.

9 If you have ears, pay attention!

Why Jesus Used Stories

(Mark 4.10-12; Luke 8.9,10)

10 Jesus' disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you use stories to speak to the people?”

11 Jesus answered:
I have explained the secrets about the kingdom of heaven to you, but not to others. 12 t Everyone who has something will be given more. But people who don't have anything will lose even what little they have. 13 I use stories when I speak to them because when they look, they cannot see, and when they listen, they cannot hear or understand.

14 t So God's promise came true, just as the prophet Isaiah had said,
“These people will listen
and listen,
but never understand.
They will look and look,
but never see.

15 All of them have
stubborn minds!
They refuse to listen;
they cover their eyes.
They cannot see or hear
or understand.
If they could,
they would turn to me,
and I would heal them.”
16  t But God has blessed you, because your eyes can see and your ears can hear!

17 Many prophets and good people were eager to see what you see and to hear what you hear. But I tell you they did not see or hear.

Jesus Explains the Story //about the Farmer

(Mark 4.13-20; Luke 8.11-15)

18 Now listen to the meaning of the story about the farmer:
19 The seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message about the kingdom, but don't understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches the message from their hearts. 20 The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it at once.

21 But they don't have deep roots, and they don't last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.
22 The seeds that fell among the thornbushes are also people who hear the message. But they start worrying about the needs of this life and are fooled by the desire to get rich. So the message gets choked out, and they never produce anything.

23 The seeds that fell on good ground are the people who hear and understand the message. They produce as much as 100 or 60 or 30 times what was planted.

Weeds among the Wheat

24 Jesus then told them this story:
The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a farmer scattered good seed in a field.

25 But while everyone was sleeping, an enemy came and scattered weed seeds in the field and then left.
26 When the plants came up and began to mature, the farmer's servants could see the weeds.

27 The servants came and asked, “Sir, didn't you scatter good seed in your field? Where did these weeds come from?”

28 “An enemy did this,” he replied.
His servants then asked, “Do you want us to go out and pull up the weeds?”
29 “No!” he answered. “You might also pull up the wheat.

30 Leave the weeds alone until harvest time. Then I'll tell my workers to gather the weeds and tie them up and burn them. But I'll order them to store the wheat in my barn.”

Stories about a Mustard Seed //and Yeast

(Mark 4.30-32; Luke 13.18-21)

31 Jesus told them another story:
The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a farmer plants a mustard seed in a field.

32 Although it is the smallest of all seeds, it grows larger than any garden plant and becomes a tree. Birds even come and nest on its branches.

33 Jesus also said:
The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when a woman mixes a little yeast into three big batches of flour. Finally, all the dough rises.

The Reason for Teaching //with Stories

(Mark 4.33,34)

35 t So God's promise came true, just as the prophett had said,
“I will use stories
to speak my message
and to explain things hidden
since the creation
of the world.”

Jesus Explains the Story //about the Weeds

36 After Jesus left the crowd and went inside, t his disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the story about the weeds in the wheat field.”

37 Jesus answered:
The one who scattered the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, and the good seeds are the people who belong to the kingdom. The weeds are those who belong to the evil one,

39 and the one who scattered them is the devil. The harvest is the end of time, and angels are the ones who bring in the harvest.
40 Weeds are gathered and burned. That's how it will be at the end of time. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather from his kingdom everyone who does wrong or causes others to sin. 42 Then he will throw them into a flaming furnace, where people will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

43 t But everyone who has done right will shine like the sun in their Father's kingdom. If you have ears, pay attention!

A Hidden Treasure

44 The kingdom of heaven is like what happens when someone finds a treasure hidden in a field and buries it again. Such a person is happy and goes and sells everything in order to buy that field.

A Valuable Pearl

46 After finding a very valuable one, the owner goes and sells everything in order to buy that pearl.

A Fish Net

50 Then those evil people will be thrown into a flaming furnace, where they will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

New and Old Treasures

51 Jesus asked his disciples if they understood all these things. They said, “Yes, we do.”

52 So he told them, “Every student of the Scriptures who becomes a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like someone who brings out new and old treasures from the storeroom.”

The People of Nazareth Turn //against Jesus

(Mark 6.1-6; Luke 4.16-30)

57 t So the people were upset because of what he was doing.
But Jesus said, “Prophets are honored by everyone, except the people of their hometown and their own family.” 58 And because the people did not have any faith, Jesus did not work many miracles there.
