La señal de Jonás

1 Algunos de los fariseos y de los saduceos se acercaron a Jesús para ponerle una trampa, y le dijeron:

—Queremos que hagas un milagro que pruebe que Dios te ha enviado.

2 Pero Jesús les dijo:

—Cuando ustedes miran el cielo por la tarde, y está rojo, dicen: “¡Va a hacer buen tiempo!”3 Pero si en la mañana el cielo está rojo y nublado, dicen: “¡Hoy va a hacer mal tiempo!” Ustedes entienden muy bien las señales en el cielo acerca del tiempo. ¿Por qué, entonces, no entienden que lo que ahora hago es una señal de Dios?

4 Ustedes piden una señal porque son malos y no quieren creer. Pero la única señal que les daré será lo que le pasó al profeta Jonás.

Dicho esto, Jesús los dejó y se fue.

Las enseñanzas de los fariseos

5 Jesús y sus discípulos cruzaron al otro lado del Lago de Galilea. Pero los discípulos se olvidaron de llevar pan.

6 Y Jesús les dijo:

—Miren, tengan cuidado con la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos .

7 Los discípulos comenzaron a hablar entre ellos, y decían: «Seguramente Jesús dijo eso porque no trajimos pan».

8 Jesús se dio cuenta de lo que hablaban, y les dijo:

—¡Qué poco confían en Dios! ¿Por qué se preocupan por no tener pan?9 Entiendan bien lo que les quiero decir; ¿o ya se olvidaron de aquella vez, cuando alimenté a cinco mil hombres con cinco panes nada más? ¿Ya se olvidaron de las canastas que llenaron con los pedazos que sobraron?10 ¿Ya no recuerdan que también alimenté a otros cuatro mil con sólo siete panes, y que ustedes llenaron muchas canastas?

11 ¿No entienden que yo no estaba hablando de pan? ¡Cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos!

12 Entonces los discípulos entendieron que Jesús no estaba hablando de la levadura que se pone en la masa del pan, sino de las malas enseñanzas de los fariseos y de los saduceos.

¿Quién es Jesús?

13 Cuando llegaron cerca del pueblo de Cesarea de Filipo, Jesús preguntó a sus discípulos :

—¿Qué dice la gente acerca de mí, el Hijo del hombre ?

14 Los discípulos contestaron:

—Algunos dicen que eres Juan el Bautista, y otros dicen que eres el profeta Elías, o el profeta Jeremías, o alguno de los profetas.

15 Entonces Jesús les preguntó:

—Y ustedes, ¿qué opinan? ¿Quién soy yo?

16 Pedro contestó:

—Tú eres el Mesías , el Hijo del Dios que vive y da vida.

17 Jesús le dijo:

—¡Bendito seas, Pedro hijo de Jonás! Porque no sabes esto por tu propia cuenta, sino que te lo enseñó mi Padre que está en el cielo.18 Por eso te llamaré Pedro, que quiere decir “piedra”. Sobre esta piedra construiré mi iglesia , y la muerte no podrá destruirla.

19 A ti, Pedro, te daré autoridad en el reino de Dios . Todas las cosas que tú prohíbas aquí en la tierra, desde el cielo Dios las prohibirá. Y las cosas que tú permitas, también Dios las permitirá.

20 Entonces Jesús ordenó a sus discípulos que no le contaran a nadie que él era el Mesías.

Jesús habla de su muerte

21 Desde ese momento, Jesús comenzó a decirles a sus discípulos lo que le iba a pasar: «Tendré que ir a Jerusalén, y los líderes del país, los sacerdotes principales y los maestros de la Ley me harán sufrir mucho. Allí van a matarme, pero tres días después resucitaré.»

22 Entonces Pedro se llevó a Jesús aparte y lo reprendió por hablar así. Le dijo:

—¡Eso no puede sucederte, Señor! ¡Que Dios nunca lo permita!

23 Jesús se volvió y le dijo:

—¡Pedro, estás hablando como Satanás ! ¡Vete! Tú no entiendes los planes de Dios, y me estás pidiendo que los desobedezca.

24 Luego Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos:

«Si ustedes quieren ser mis discípulos, tienen que olvidarse de hacer su propia voluntad. Tienen que estar dispuestos a cargar su cruz t y a hacer lo que yo les diga.25 Si sólo les preocupa salvar su vida, la van a perder. Pero si deciden dar su vida por mi causa, entonces se salvarán .26 De nada sirve que una persona gane en este mundo todo lo que quiera, si al fin de cuentas pierde su vida. Y nadie puede dar nada para salvarla.27 Porque yo, el Hijo del hombre , vendré pronto con el poder de Dios y con mis ángeles , para darles su premio a los que hicieron el bien y para castigar a los que hicieron el mal.

28 Les aseguro que algunos de ustedes, que están aquí conmigo, no morirán hasta que me vean reinar.»

MATTHEW 16

A Demand for a Sign //from Heaven

(Mark 8.11-13; Luke 12.54-56)

1  t The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tried to test him by asking for a sign from heaven.

2 He told them:
If the sky is red in the evening, you say the weather will be good. 3 But if the sky is red and gloomy in the morning, you say it is going to rain. You can tell what the weather will be like by looking at the sky. But you don't understand what is happening now.t

4 t You want a sign because you are evil and won't believe! But the only sign you will be given is what happened to Jonah.t
Then Jesus left.

The Yeast of the Pharisees //and Sadducees

(Mark 8.14-21)

6 t Jesus then warned them, “Watch out! Guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

7 The disciples talked this over and said to each other, “He must be saying this because we didn't bring along any bread.”

8 Jesus knew what they were thinking and said:
You surely don't have much faith! Why are you talking about not having any bread? 9 t Don't you understand? Have you forgotten about the 5,000 people and all those baskets of leftovers from just five loaves of bread? 10 t And what about the 4,000 people and all those baskets of leftovers from only seven loaves of bread?

11 Don't you know by now that I am not talking to you about bread? Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!

12 Finally, the disciples understood that Jesus wasn't talking about the yeast used to make bread, but about the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Who Is Jesus?

(Mark 8.27-30; Luke 9.18-21)

13 When Jesus and his disciples were near the town of Caesarea Philippi, he asked them, “What do people say about the Son of Man?”

14  t The disciples answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptist or maybe Elijaht or Jeremiah or some other prophet.”

15 Then Jesus asked, “But who do you say I am?”

16  t Simon Peter spoke up, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus told him:
Simon, son of Jonah, you are blessed! You didn't discover this on your own. It was shown to you by my Father in heaven. 18 So I will call you Peter, which means “a rock.” On this rock I will build my church, and death itself will not have any power over it.

19 t I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and God in heaven will allow whatever you allow on earth. But he will not allow anything you don't allow.

20 Jesus told his disciples not to tell anyone he was the Messiah.

Jesus Speaks about His Suffering //and Death

(Mark 8.31—9.1; Luke 9.22-27)

21 From then on, Jesus began telling his disciples what would happen to him. He said, “I must go to Jerusalem. There the nation's leaders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law of Moses will make me suffer terribly. I will be killed, but three days later I will rise to life.”

22 Peter took Jesus aside and told him to stop talking like that. He said, “God would never let this happen to you, Lord!”

23 Jesus turned to Peter and said, “Satan, get away from me! You're in my way because you think like everyone else and not like God.”

24  t Then Jesus said to his disciples:
If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross and follow me. 25 t If you want to save your life, t you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

26 What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself? What would you give to get back your soul?
27  t The Son of Man will soon come in the glory of his Father and with his angels to reward all people for what they have done. 28 I promise you some of those standing here will not die before they see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom.
