Jesús se transforma

1 Seis días después, Jesús llevó a Pedro y a los hermanos Santiago y Juan hasta un cerro alto, para estar solos.2 Frente a ellos, Jesús se transformó: Su cara brillaba como el sol, y su ropa se puso tan blanca como la luz del mediodía.

3 Luego los tres discípulos vieron aparecer a Moisés y al profeta Elías, y ellos conversaban con Jesús.

4 Entonces Pedro le dijo a Jesús: «Señor, ¡qué bueno que estemos aquí! Si quieres, voy a construir tres enramadas: una para ti, una para Moisés y otra para Elías.»

5 Mientras Pedro hablaba, una nube brillante vino y se detuvo sobre ellos. Desde la nube se oyó una voz que decía: «Éste es mi Hijo, yo lo amo mucho y estoy muy contento con él. Ustedes deben obedecerlo.»
6 Al oír esto, los discípulos se tiraron al suelo, y no se atrevían a mirar, pues tenían mucho miedo.

7 Jesús se acercó, los tocó y les dijo: «Levántense y no tengan miedo.»
8 Cuando los discípulos se levantaron, vieron que Jesús estaba solo.

9 Mientras bajaban del cerro, Jesús les ordenó:

—No le cuenten a nadie lo que han visto hasta que yo, el Hijo del hombre , haya muerto y resucitado .

10 Los discípulos le preguntaron:

—¿Por qué los maestros de la Ley dicen que el profeta Elías va a venir antes que el Mesías ?

11 Jesús les respondió:

—Eso es verdad. Elías viene primero, para prepararlo todo.

12 Sin embargo, les aseguro que Elías ya vino; pero la gente no lo reconoció, y lo trataron como quisieron. A mí, el Hijo del hombre, también me tratarán así, y sufriré mucho.

13 Los tres discípulos entendieron que Jesús estaba hablando de Juan el Bautista.

Jesús sana a un muchacho

14 Cuando llegaron a donde estaba la gente, un hombre se acercó a Jesús, se arrodilló ante él

15 y le dijo:

—¡Señor, ten compasión de mi hijo y ayúdalo! Está muy enfermo y sufre de terribles ataques. Muchas veces, cuando le da un ataque, cae al fuego o al agua.

16 Lo traje para que tus discípulos lo sanaran, pero no han podido hacerlo.

17 Jesús contestó:

—Ustedes están confundidos y no confían en Dios. ¿Acaso no pueden hacer nada sin mí? ¿Cuándo van a aprender? ¡Tráiganme aquí al muchacho!

18 Jesús reprendió al demonio que estaba en el muchacho, y lo obligó a salir. El muchacho quedó sano.

19 Poco después, los discípulos llamaron a Jesús aparte y le preguntaron:

—¿Por qué nosotros no pudimos sacar ese demonio?

20-21 Jesús les respondió:

—Porque ustedes no confían en Dios. Les aseguro que si tuvieran una confianza tan pequeña como un grano de mostaza, podrían ordenarle a esta montaña que se moviera de su lugar, y los obedecería. ¡Nada sería imposible para ustedes!

Jesús habla otra vez de su muerte

22 Mientras viajaban juntos por la región de Galilea, Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos : «Mis enemigos me van a traicionar,

23 y me matarán. Pero yo, el Hijo del hombre , resucitaré al tercer día.»
Al oír eso, los discípulos se pusieron muy tristes.

El impuesto para el templo

24 Cuando Jesús y sus discípulos llegaron al pueblo de Cafarnaúm, los que cobraban el impuesto para el templo fueron a preguntarle a Pedro:

—¿Paga tu maestro el impuesto para el templo?

25 Pedro contestó:

—Sí, lo paga.

Cuando Pedro entró en la casa donde estaban todos, Jesús le habló primero y le dijo:

—Dime, Pedro, ¿a quiénes cobran los reyes impuestos y contribuciones? ¿A los ciudadanos de su reino, o a los extranjeros?

26 Pedro contestó:

—A los extranjeros.

Jesús dijo:

—Entonces, los ciudadanos del reino no tienen que pagar impuestos.

27 Sin embargo, para que estos cobradores no se enojen, ve al mar y echa tu anzuelo. Ábrele la boca al primer pez que saques, y allí encontrarás una moneda. Toma ese dinero, y paga mi impuesto y el tuyo.

MATTHEW 17

The True Glory of Jesus

(Mark 9.2-13; Luke 9.28-36)

1  t Six days later Jesus took Peter and the brothers James and John with him. They went up on a very high mountain where they could be alone.

2 There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. His face was shining like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
3 All at once Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus.

4 So Peter said to him, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5  t While Peter was still speaking, the shadow of a bright cloud passed over them. From the cloud a voice said, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him. Listen to what he says!” 6 When the disciples heard the voice, they were so afraid they fell flat on the ground. 7 But Jesus came over and touched them. He said, “Get up and don't be afraid!”

8 When they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus.

9 On their way down from the mountain, Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had been raised from death.

10  t The disciples asked Jesus, “Don't the teachers of the Law of Moses say Elijah must come before the Messiah does?”
11  t Jesus told them, “Elijah certainly will come and get everything ready. 12 t In fact, he has already come. But the people did not recognize him and treated him just as they wanted to. They will soon make the Son of Man suffer in the same way.”

13 Then the disciples understood Jesus was talking to them about John the Baptist.

Jesus Heals a Boy

(Mark 9.14-29; Luke 9.37-43a)

16 I brought him to your disciples, but none of them could heal him.”
17 Jesus said, “You people are too stubborn to have any faith! How much longer must I be with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here.”

18 Then Jesus spoke sternly to the demon. It went out of the boy, and right then he was healed.

19 Later the disciples went to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we force out the demon?”

20-21  t Jesus replied:
It is because you don't have enough faith! But I can promise you this. If you had faith no larger than a mustard seed, you could tell this mountain to move from here to there. And it would. Everything would be possible for you.t

Jesus Again Speaks //about His Death

(Mark 9.30-32; Luke 9.43b-45)

23 who will kill him. But three days later he will rise to life.” All of this made the disciples very sad.

Paying the Temple Tax

24  t When Jesus and the others arrived in Capernaum, the collectors for the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”

25 “Yes, he does,” Peter answered.
After they had returned home, Jesus went up to Peter and asked him, “Simon, what do you think? Do the kings of this earth collect taxes and fees from their own people or from foreigners?”t

26 Peter answered, “From foreigners.”
Jesus replied, “Then their own peoplet don't have to pay. 27 But we don't want to cause trouble. So go cast a line into the lake and pull out the first fish you hook. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Use it to pay your taxes and mine.”
