Matthieu 21

L’entrée du Roi à Jérusalem

(Mc 11.1-11; Lc 19.28-38; Jn 12.12-19)

1 En approchant de *Jérusalem, ils arrivèrent près du village de Bethphagé, sur le mont des Oliviers. Jésus envoya deux de ses *disciples

2 en leur disant:
—Allez dans le village qui se trouve là devant vous. Dès que vous y serez, vous trouverez une ânesse attachée et, près d’elle, son petit. Détachez-les et amenez-les moi.

3 Si quelqu’un vous fait une observation, vous n’aurez qu’à lui dire: «Le Seigneur en a besoin», et on vous les laissera prendre immédiatement.

4 Tout cela arriva pour que se réalise la prédiction du *prophète:

5 Dites à la communauté de Sion:
Voici ton Roi q ui vient à toi;
humble, il vient monté sur une ânesse,
sur un ânon,
le petit d’une bête de somme .

6 Les disciples partirent donc et suivirent les instructions de Jésus.

7 Ils amenèrent l’ânesse et son petit et posèrent sur eux leurs manteaux, et Jésus s’assit dessus.

8 Une grande foule de gens étendirent leurs manteaux sur le chemin. D’autres coupèrent des branches aux arbres et en jonchèrent le chemin.

9 Et toute la foule, de la tête à la fin du cortège, criait:

Hosanna au *Fils de David!
Béni soit c elui qui vient
| de la part du Seigneur!
Hosanna à Dieu au plus haut des cieux!

10 Quand Jésus entra dans Jérusalem, toute la ville fut en émoi. Partout on demandait:
—Qui est-ce?

11 Et la foule qui l’accompagnait répondait:
—C’est Jésus le prophète, de *Nazareth en *Galilée.

Jésus dans le Temple

(Mc 11.15-19; Lc 19.45-48; voir Jn 2.13-16)

12 Jésus entra dans la cour du *Temple. Il en chassa tous les marchands, ainsi que leurs clients. Il renversa les comptoirs des changeurs d’argent, ainsi que les chaises des marchands de pigeons,

13 et il leur dit:
—Il est écrit: On appellera ma maison une maison de prière , mais vous, vous en faites un repaire de brigands.

14 Des aveugles et des paralysés s’approchèrent de lui dans la cour du Temple et il les guérit.

15 Quand les chefs des *prêtres et les *spécialistes de la Loi virent les miracles extraordinaires qu’il venait d’accomplir, quand ils entendirent les cris des enfants dans la cour du Temple: «Hosanna au *Fils de David!», ils se mirent en colère

16 et lui dirent:
—Tu entends ce qu’ils crient?
—Parfaitement, leur répondit Jésus. Et vous, n’avez-vous donc jamais lu cette parole:

De la bouche des tout petits
et de celle des nourrissons,
tu as su tirer ta louange .

17 Puis il les laissa et quitta la ville pour se rendre à Béthanie, où il passa la nuit.

La malédiction du figuier

(Mc 11.12-14,20-25)

18 Tôt le lendemain matin, en revenant vers la ville, il eut faim.

19 Il aperçut un figuier sur le bord de la route et s’en approcha; mais il n’y trouva que des feuilles. Alors, il dit à l’arbre:
—Tu ne porteras plus jamais de fruit!
A l’instant même, le figuier devint tout sec.

20 En voyant cela, les disciples furent très étonnés et s’écrièrent:
—Comment ce figuier est-il devenu sec en un instant?

21 —Vraiment, je vous l’assure, répondit Jésus, si vous avez la foi, si vous ne doutez pas, non seulement vous pourrez accomplir ce que j’ai fait à ce figuier, mais même si vous dites à cette colline: «Soulève-toi de là et jette-toi dans la mer», cela se fera.

22 Si vous priez avec foi, tout ce que vous demanderez, vous l’obtiendrez.

L’autorité de Jésus contestée

(Mc 11.27-33; Lc 20.1-8)

23 Jésus se rendit au *Temple et se mit à enseigner.
Alors, les chefs des *prêtres et les responsables du peuple vinrent le trouver et l’interpellèrent:
—De quel droit agis-tu ainsi? Qui t’a donné le droit de faire cela?

24 Jésus leur répondit:
—Moi aussi, j’ai une question à vous poser, une seule. Si vous me répondez, je vous dirai à mon tour de quel droit je fais cela.

25 De qui Jean tenait-il son mandat pour baptiser? De Dieu ou des hommes?
Alors ils se mirent à raisonner intérieurement:
—Si nous disons: «De Dieu», il va nous demander: «Pourquoi alors n’avez-vous pas cru en lui?»

26 Mais si nous répondons: «Des hommes», nous avons bien lieu de craindre la réaction de la foule, car tout le monde tient Jean pour un *prophète.

27 Ils répondirent donc à Jésus:
—Nous ne savons pas.
Et lui de leur répliquer:
—Eh bien, moi non plus, je ne vous dirai pas de quel droit j’agis comme je le fais.

La parabole des deux fils

28 —Que pensez-vous de l’histoire que voici? ajouta Jésus. Un homme avait deux fils. Il alla trouver le premier et lui dit: «Mon fils, va aujourd’hui travailler dans notre vigne.»

29 «Je n’en ai pas envie», lui répondit celui-ci.
Mais, plus tard, il regretta d’avoir répondu ainsi et se rendit dans la vigne.

30 Le père alla trouver le second fils et lui fit la même demande. Celui-ci lui répondit: «Oui, mon Seigneur, j’y vais!»
Mais il n’y alla pas.

31 Lequel des deux a fait la volonté de son père?
—C’est le premier, répondirent-ils.
Et Jésus ajouta:
—Vraiment, je vous l’assure: les *collecteurs d’impôts et les prostituées vous précéderont dans le *royaume de Dieu.

32 En effet, Jean est venu, il vous a montré ce qu’est une vie juste, et vous n’avez pas cru en lui — tandis que les collecteurs d’impôts et les prostituées ont cru en lui. Et, bien que vous ayez eu leur exemple sous vos yeux, vous n’avez pas éprouvé les regrets qui auraient pu vous amener enfin à croire en lui.

La culpabilité des chefs religieux juifs

(Mc 12.1-12; Lc 20.9-19)

33 —Ecoutez encore une *parabole: Un homme avait une propriété. Il y planta une vigne, l’entoura d’une haie, y creusa un trou pour le pressoir et y construisit une tour pour la surveiller. Après cela, il la loua à des vignerons et partit en voyage.

34 A l’approche des vendanges, il envoya ses serviteurs auprès de ces vignerons pour recevoir la part de récolte qui lui revenait.

35 Mais les vignerons se précipitèrent sur ces serviteurs: l’un d’eux fut roué de coups, un autre fut tué, un troisième assommé à coups de pierres.

36 Le propriétaire envoya alors d’autres serviteurs, plus nombreux que les premiers. Mais ils furent reçus de la même manière par les vignerons.

37 Finalement, il leur envoya son propre fils en se disant: Pour mon fils au moins, ils auront du respect!

38 Mais dès que les vignerons aperçurent le fils, ils se dirent entre eux:
«Voilà l’héritier! Venez! Tuons-le! Et nous récupérerons son héritage.»

39 Ils se jetèrent donc sur lui, le traînèrent hors du vignoble et le tuèrent.

40 Quand le propriétaire de la vigne viendra, comment agira-t-il envers ces vignerons?

41 Ils lui répondirent:
—Il fera exécuter sans pitié ces misérables, puis il confiera le soin de sa vigne à d’autres vignerons qui lui donneront sa part de récolte en temps voulu.

42 Et Jésus ajouta:
—N’avez-vous jamais lu dans les Ecritures:

La pierre rejetée par les constructeurs
est devenue la pierre principale,
| à l ’angle de l’édifice.
C’est le Seigneur
| qui l’a voulu ainsi
et c’est un prodige à nos yeux .

43 Voilà pourquoi je vous déclare que le *royaume de Dieu vous sera enlevé et sera donné à un peuple qui en produira les fruits.

44 [Mais:

Celui qui tombera su r cette pierre-là,
se brisera la nuque,
et si elle tombe sur quelqu’un,
elle l’écrasera .]

45 Après avoir entendu ces paraboles, les chefs des *prêtres et les *pharisiens comprirent que c’était eux que Jésus visait.

46 Ils cherchaient un moyen de l’arrêter, mais ils avaient peur des réactions de la foule, car tous considéraient Jésus comme un *prophète.

Matthew 21

The Triumphal Entry

1 Nowt when they approached Jerusalems and came to Bethphage,s at the Mount of Olives,s Jesus sent two disciples,2 telling them, “Go to the village ahead of you.t Right away you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.3 If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, ‘The Lord needs them,’s and he will send them at once.”

4 Thist took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet:t

5 “Tell the people of Zion,t
‘Look, your king is coming to you,
unassuming and seated on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”t
6 Sot the disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them.7 They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloakst on them, and he sat on them.8 At very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those following kept shouting,t “Hosannats to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!sHosanna in the highest!”10 As he entered Jerusalem the whole city was thrown into an uproar,t saying, “Who is this?”

11 And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareths in Galilee.”

Cleansing the Temple

12 Thent Jesus entered the temple areats and drove out all those who were selling and buying in the temple courts,ts and turned over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves.

13 And he said to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’s but you are turning it into a dentof robbers!”s
14 The blind and lame came to him in the temple courts, and he healed them.15 But when the chief priests and the experts in the lawt saw the wonderful things he did and heard the children crying out in the temple courts,t “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they became indignant16 and said to him, “Do you hear what they are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read, ‘Out of the mouths of children and nursing infants you have prepared praise for yourself’?”s

17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there.

The Withered Fig Tree

18 Now early in the morning, as he returned to the city, he was hungry.19 After noticing a fig treets by the road he went to it, but found nothing on it except leaves. He said to it, “Never again will there be fruit from you!” And the fig tree withered at once.20 When the disciples saw it they were amazed, saying, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”21 Jesust answered them, “I tell you the truth,t if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

22 And whatever you ask in prayer, if you believe,t you will receive.”

The Authority of Jesus

23 Now after Jesust entered the temple courts,t the chief priests and elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching and said, “By what authorityt are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”24 Jesust answered them, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.25 Where did John’s baptism come from? From heaven or from people?”ts They discussed this among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’26 But if we say, ‘From people,’ we fear the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet.”

27 Sot they answered Jesus,t “We don’t know.”s Then he said to them, “Neither will I tell yous by what authorityt I am doing these things.

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “Whatt do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’29 The boy answered,t ‘I will not.’ But later he had a change of heartt and went.30 The fathert went to the other son and said the same thing. This boy answered,t ‘I will, sir,’ but did not go.31 Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said, “The first.”s Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth,t tax collectorss and prostitutes will go ahead of you into the kingdom of God!

32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe. Althought you saw this, you did not later change your mindss and believe him.

The Parable of the Tenants

33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landownert who planted a vineyard.s He put a fence around it, dug a pit for its winepress, and built a watchtower. Thent he leased it to tenant farmerss and went on a journey.34 When the harvest time was near, he sent his slavests to the tenants to collect his portion of the crop.t35 But the tenants seized his slaves, beat one,s killed another, and stoned another.36 Again he sent other slaves, more than the first, and they treated them the same way.37 Finally he sent his son to them,s saying, ‘They will respect my son.’38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and get his inheritance!’39 Sot they seized him,t threw him out of the vineyard,s and killed him.40 Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”

41 They said to him, “He will utterly destroy those evil men! Then he will lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him his portion at the harvest.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures:
‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.ts
This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?s
43 For this reason I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a peoplet who will produce its fruit.44 The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls will be crushed.”ssts45 Whent the chief priests and the Phariseess heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them.

46 They wanted to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowds, because the crowdst regarded him as a prophet.
