Matteo 21

Gesù sale a Gerusalemme.

1 Quando Gesù e i suoi discepoli furono vicini a Gerusalemme, in prossimità di Bètfage, sul Monte degli Ulivi, Gesù mandò avanti due dei suoi discepoli al villaggio più vicino.2 « Non appena entrerete », disse loro, « troverete un’asina legata, con il suo puledro vicino. Slegateli e portatemeli qui.3 Se qualcuno vi chiede cosa state facendo, dite soltanto: “Il Signore ne ha bisogno, ma ve li renderà subito”, e non ci saranno contrattempi ».4 Con questo fatto si avverava l’antica profezia:5 « Dite a Gerusalemme che il suo re viene verso di lei, cavalcando umilmente un puledro d’asina! »6 I due discepoli fecero come Gesù aveva loro ordinato.7 Gli portarono le due bestie, poi misero i loro mantelli sulla groppa del puledro, perché Gesù potesse cavalcarlo.8 E molti fra la folla stendevano i propri mantelli davanti al suo cammino, mentre altri tagliavano rami d’albero da stendere per terra davanti a lui.9 E la folla, che lo precedeva e lo seguiva, gridava: «Osanna al figlio di Davide! Benedetto colui che viene nel nome del Signore! Osanna nel più alto dei cieli. »10 Quando Gesù arrivò, tutta la città di Gerusalemme era in agitazione. « Chi è mai quest’uomo?! » chiedevano tutti.11 E la folla rispondeva: « È Gesù, il profeta che viene da Nazaret di Galilea! »12 Poi Gesù entrò nel tempio, ne cacciò fuori tutti i mercanti, rovesciò i tavolini dei cambiavalute e le bancarelle dei venditori di colombi.13 « Le Scritture dicono che il mio tempio è un posto di preghiera! » gridò. « Ma voi l’avete trasformato in una spelonca di ladri! »14 Allora i ciechi e gli zoppi vennero da lui ed egli li guarì, lì nel tempio.15 Quando i primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei videro questi miracoli meravigliosi e sentirono che perfino i bambini gridavano nel tempio: « Dio benedica il figlio di Davide! », rimasero turbati e indignati. Si rivolsero a Gesù e gli chiesero: « Non senti che stanno gridando questi bambini? »16 « Sì », rispose Gesù, « non avete mai letto le Scritture? Dicono: “Tu hai tratto forza dalla bocca dei bambini e dei lattanti che ti lodano.” »17 Poi ritornò a Betania, dove passò la notte.18 La mattina dopo, mentre tornava a Gerusalemme, Gesù ebbe fame.19 Avendo notato un albero di fichi a lato della strada, si avvicinò per vedere se c’erano dei frutti, ma trovò soltanto foglie. Allora disse all’albero: « Che tu non produca mai più frutti! » Immediatamente il fico si seccò.20 I discepoli restarono allibiti e chiesero: « Come ha fatto questo fico a seccarsi così in fretta? »21 Allora Gesù disse loro: « Per la verità, se avete fede e non dubitate, potrete fare cose come questa e anche più grandi. Potreste perfino dire a questo Monte degli Ulivi: “Gettati nel mare”, e lo farebbe.22 Potete ottenere tutto, veramente tutto ciò che chiedete in preghiera, se avete fede ».

I capi giudei tendono la loro trappola.

23 Gesù ritornò nel tempio. Mentre stava insegnando, i primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei gli si avvicinarono per domandargli con quale autorità il giorno prima avesse cacciato i mercanti.24 « Ve lo dico, se prima rispondete ad una domanda », rispose Gesù.25 « Secondo voi, Giovanni Battista fu mandato da Dio o no? » Essi cominciarono a discutere fra loro. « Se diciamo: “Da Dio”, » dicevano, « allora ci chiederà perché non abbiamo creduto a ciò che diceva Giovanni.26 Se, invece, diciamo che non fu Dio a mandarlo rischiamo di essere linciati, perché tutta questa gente crede che Giovanni sia un profeta ».27 Finalmente risposero: « Non lo sappiamo! »
Allora Gesù disse: « In tal caso neppure io risponderò alla vostra domanda.28 Voglio però il vostro parere su questo fatto. Un uomo con due figli disse al maggiore: “Figliuolo, vai a lavorare nella vigna, oggi”.29 “Non ne ho voglia”, gli rispose il figlio, ma più tardi cambiò idea e vi andò.30 Poi il padre disse al minore: “Vai a lavorare!” Ed egli rispose: “Sì ci vado”. Ma non lo fece.31 Secondo voi, chi dei due obbedì a suo padre? »
« Il primo, naturalmente », risposero.
Allora Gesù disse: « Sicuramente ladri e prostitute entreranno nel Regno prima di voi.32 Perché, quando Giovanni Battista v’invitò a pentirvi e a convertirvi a Dio, voi non gli avete dato ascolto, mentre gli hanno creduto dei ladri e delle prostitute. E perfino quando avete visto ciò che accadeva davanti ai vostri occhi, non avete voluto cambiare idea e avete continuato a non credergli.33 Ascoltate ora questa storia: un proprietario terriero piantò una vigna con una siepe intorno, scavò una buca per pigiare l’uva e fece costruire una piattaforma per il guardiano, poi affittò la vigna ad alcuni contadini con un contratto di mezzadria e se ne andò a vivere in un altro paese.34 Al tempo della vendemmia, mandò dei suoi dipendenti dai contadini per ritirare la sua parte.35 Ma i contadini aggredirono i suoi uomini, ne malmenarono uno, ne uccisero un altro e ne lapidarono un terzo.36 Allora il proprietario mandò molti altri suoi uomini a richiedere la parte che gli spettava, ma il risultato fu lo stesso.37 Finalmente il padrone mandò suo figlio, pensando che avrebbero senz’altro avuto rispetto di lui.38 Invece, quando quei contadini videro il figlio avvicinarsi, dissero fra loro: “Ecco l’erede di questa proprietà; venite, uccidiamolo, così ce la terremo per noi!”39 Allora lo presero, lo gettarono fuori dalla vigna e lo uccisero.40 E ora ditemi: quando il padrone tornerà, che cosa farà a quei contadini? »41 « Li farà morire fra atroci sofferenze e affitterà la vigna ad altri, pronti a pagare il dovuto », risposero i capi giudei.42 Allora Gesù chiese loro: « Non avete mai letto nelle Scritture: “La pietra che i costruttori hanno scartato è diventata la pietra angolare, la pietra più importante dell’edificio! Questa è l’opera del Signore, una meraviglia per i nostri occhi!”43 Intendo dire che il Regno di Dio vi sarà tolto e sarà dato ad un popolo che farà crescere i frutti.44 Tutti quelli che inciamperanno in questa pietra di verità, saranno sfracellati, e quelli su cui cadrà, saranno ridotti in polvere! »45 Quando i primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei si accorsero che Gesù stava parlando di loro (erano loro i malvagi contadini della sua storia),46 avrebbero voluto liberarsi di lui, ma non osavano, perché la folla considerava Gesù un profeta.

Matthew 21

1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and came unto Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,2 saying unto them, Go into the village that is over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.3 And if any one say aught unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.4 Now this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying,

5 Tell ye the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, Meek, and riding upon an ass, And upon a colt the foal of an ass.

6 And the disciples went, and did even as Jesus appointed them,7 and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their garments; and he sat thereon.8 And the most part of the multitude spread their garments in the way; and others cut branches from the trees, and spread them in the way.9 And the multitudes that went before him, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, Who is this?11 And the multitudes said, This is the prophet, Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.

12 And Jesus entered into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them that sold the doves;13 and he saith unto them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer: but ye make it a den of robbers.14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children that were crying in the temple and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were moved with indignation,16 and said unto him, Hearest thou what these are saying? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea: did ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou has perfected praise?17 And he left them, and went forth out of the city to Bethany, and lodged there.

18 Now in the morning as he returned to the city, he hungered.19 And seeing a fig tree by the way side, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only; and he saith unto it, Let there be no fruit from thee henceforward for ever. And immediately the fig tree withered away.20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How did the fig tree immediately wither away?21 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do what is done to the fig tree, but even if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea, it shall be done.22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one question, which if ye tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things.25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven or from men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why then did ye not believe him?26 But if we shall say, From men; we fear the multitude; for all hold John as a prophet.27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We know not. He also said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.28 But what think ye? A man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to-day in the vineyard.29 And he answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented himself, and went.30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.31 Which of the two did the will of his father? They say, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye saw it, did not even repent yourselves afterward, that ye might believe him.

33 Hear another parable: There was a man that was a householder, who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country.34 And when the season of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, to receive his fruits.35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them in like manner.37 But afterward he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.38 But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance.39 And they took him, and cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him.40 When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do unto those husbandmen?41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those miserable men, and will let out the vineyard unto other husbandmen, who shall render him the fruits in their seasons.42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; This was from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes?

43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and shall be given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.44 And he that falleth on this stone shall be broken to pieces: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.45 And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.46 And when they sought to lay hold on him, they feared the multitudes, because they took him for a prophet.
