Jesús entra a Jerusalén

1 Cuando estaban cerca de Jerusalén y habían llegado a Betfagé en el monte de los Olivost, Jesús envió a dos de sus seguidores2 y les dijo: «Vayan a la aldea que está enfrente. Allá van a encontrar una burra atada y también un burrito. Desátenlos y tráiganmelos.

3 Si alguien les dice algo, díganle: "El Señor los necesita, pero él los devolverá después"».
4 Esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que dijo uno de los profetas:

5 «Díganle a la gente de Siont:Mira, tu rey viene hacia ti,es humilde y viene montado en un burro,sí, en un burrito,cría de un animal de carga».t
6 Los seguidores se fueron e hicieron lo que Jesús les había dicho.7 Trajeron la burra y el burrito, pusieron sobre ellos sus mantos y Jesús se sentó encima.8 Mucha gente extendía sus mantos sobre el camino. Otros cortaban ramas de los árboles y las extendían en el camino.

9 Los que caminaban al frente de él y los que lo seguían, gritaban:
—¡Viva el Salvador,t el Hijo de Davidt!¡Bendito el que vieneen el nombre del Señor!t—¡Viva Diost que está en los cielos!

10 Cuando Jesús entró a Jerusalén, toda la ciudad se alborotó. Unos preguntaban:
—¿Quién es este hombre?

11 La gente contestaba:
—Este es el profeta Jesús, de Nazaret de Galilea.

Jesús va al templo

12 Entonces Jesús entró al área del templot. Comenzó a echar a todos los que estaban comprando y vendiendo ahí. Derribó las mesas de los que cambiaban dinero y los asientos de los que vendían palomas.

13 Jesús les dijo:
—Está escrito: "Mi casa será llamada casa de oración".t ¡Pero ustedes la están convirtiendo en una guarida de ladronest!
14 Unos ciegos y cojos se acercaron a Jesús en el área del templo y él los sanó.15 Pero cuando los jefes de los sacerdotes y los maestros de la ley vieron las maravillas que él había hecho y a los niños gritando en el área del templo: «¡Viva el Salvador,t el Hijo de Davidt!», se enojaron.

16 Le preguntaron a Jesús:
—¿Oyes lo que estos niños están diciendo?
Jesús les contestó:
—Sí, los oigo. ¿No han leído la Escritura sobre esto?
"Tú lo has hecho
para que hasta los niños y los bebés
canten alabanzas".t

17 Entonces él los dejó y salió de la ciudad para Betania donde pasó la noche.

Jesús demuestra el poder de la fe

18 Muy de mañana, Jesús estaba de regreso en Jerusalén y sintió hambre.

19 Vio una higuera, pero sólo tenía hojas, se acercó y le dijo:
—¡Que nunca más vuelvas a dar fruto!
La higuera se secó al instante y murió.

20 Cuando sus seguidores vieron esto se sorprendieron y dijeron:
—¿Cómo se secó la higuera y murió tan rápido?

21 Jesús les respondió:
—Les digo la verdad: si ustedes tienen fe y no dudan, no solamente serán capaces de hacer lo que yo hice con la higuera. Es más, podrán decirle a esta montaña: "Levántate y lánzate al mar" y así sucederá.

22 Si ustedes creen, recibirán todo lo que pidan en oración.

Discusión sobre la autoridad de Jesús

23 Cuando Jesús entró al área del templot, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos líderes del pueblo se le acercaron mientras estaba enseñando, y le preguntaron:
—¿Con qué autoridad haces esto? ¿Quién te la dio?

24 Jesús les contestó:
—Yo también les haré una pregunta y si me la responden les diré con qué autoridad hago estas cosas:

25 ¿De dónde venía el bautismot de Juan? ¿De Dios o de los hombres?
Ellos comenzaron a discutir entre sí y decían: «Si decimos que venía de Dios, él nos preguntará: "¿Por qué entonces no le creyeron?"26 Pero no podemos decir que venía de los hombres. Tenemos miedo de la gente porque todos creen que Juan era un profeta».

27 Entonces le respondieron a Jesús:
—No sabemos.
Él les dijo:
—Pues yo tampoco les voy a decir con qué autoridad hago estas cosas.

Jesús cuenta la historia de dos hijos

28 Jesús continuó:
—¿Qué piensan de esto? Un hombre tenía dos hijos. Le dijo al mayor: "Hijo, ve hoy y trabaja en el viñedo".29 Él le contestó: "No quiero ir". Pero más tarde cambió de idea y fue.30 Después, el papá le pidió lo mismo al hijo menor. Él le respondió: "Sí señor, iré". Pero no lo hizo.

31 ¿Cuál de los dos hizo lo que el papá quería?
Ellos respondieron:
—El hijo mayor.
Jesús les dijo:
—Les digo la verdad: los cobradores de impuestost y las prostitutas van a entrar primero que ustedes al reino de Diost.

32 Juan el Bautista vino para mostrarles el camino de justicia y ustedes no le creyeron. En cambio, los cobradores de impuestos y las prostitutas sí le creyeron. Ustedes los vieron cambiar a ellos, pero aun así ustedes no creyeron ni cambiaron.

Historia de los labradores perversos

33 »Escuchen esta historiat: El dueño de una finca plantó un viñedo y construyó un muro alrededor. Luego, cavó un lugar para hacer el vino y construyó una torre de vigilancia. Después alquiló el viñedo a unos labradores y se fue de viaje.34 Cuando llegó el tiempo de la cosecha, el dueño mandó a sus siervos para que hablaran con los labradores y pidieran la parte que le correspondía al dueño.35 Pero los labradores agarraron a los siervos. Golpearon a uno, mataron a otro y agarraron a pedradas a otro más.

36 El dueño mandó otra vez a otros siervos, y los labradores les hicieron lo mismo.
37 »Más tarde, el dueño les envió a su propio hijo. Se decía a sí mismo: "A mi hijo sí lo respetarán".38 Pero cuando los labradores vieron que era el hijo del dueño, dijeron entre ellos: "Este es el heredero, ¡vamos a matarlo para quedarnos con la herencia!"

39 Entonces, lo agarraron, lo echaron fuera del viñedo y lo mataron.

40 »¿Ustedes qué creen que hará el dueño del viñedo con esos labradores cuando llegue?»

41 Le respondieron:
—Él matará de manera terrible a esos perversos y les alquilará el viñedo a otros labradores que sí le darán su parte de la cosecha.

42 Jesús les dijo:
—Seguramente habrán leído las Escriturast que dicen:»La piedra que los constructores rechazaronse ha convertido en la piedra principal.Esto fue lo que hizo el Señory es maravilloso verlo.t
43 »Por eso les digo: a ustedes se les quitará el reino de Diost y se le dará a otra nación que produzca lo que Dios quiere que su reino produzca.

44 El que caiga sobre esa piedra se hará en pedazos y si la piedra le cae encima a alguien, lo hará polvo».t
45 Cuando los jefes de los sacerdotes y los fariseost escucharon estas historias, se dieron cuenta de que Jesús estaba hablando de ellos.

46 Querían arrestarlo, pero tenían miedo del pueblo porque la gente consideraba que era un profeta.

Matthew 21

The Triumphal Entry

1 When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,2 saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me.3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

5 "SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION,
'BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU,
GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY,
EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.'"6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them,7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats.8 Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road.9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting,
"Hosanna to the Son of David;
BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;
Hosanna in the highest!"10 When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, "Who is this?"11 And the crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee."

Cleansing the Temple

12 And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.13 And He *said to them, "It is written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER'; but you are making it a ROBBERS' DEN."

14 And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they became indignant16 and said to Him, "Do You hear what these children are saying?" And Jesus *said to them, "Yes; have you never read, 'OUT OF THE MOUTH OF INFANTS AND NURSING BABIES YOU HAVE PREPARED PRAISE FOR YOURSELF'?"17 And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.

The Barren Fig Tree

18 Now in the morning, when He was returning to the city, He became hungry.19 Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only; and He *said to it, "No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you." And at once the fig tree withered.

20 Seeing this, the disciples were amazed and asked, "How did the fig tree wither all at once?"21 And Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will happen.22 And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."

Authority Challenged

23 When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?"24 Jesus said to them, "I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.25 The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?" And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?'26 But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet."27 And answering Jesus, they said, "We do not know." He also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Parable of Two Sons

28 "But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, 'Son, go work today in the vineyard.'29 And he answered, 'I will not'; but afterward he regretted it and went.30 The man came to the second and said the same thing; and he answered, 'I will, sir'; but he did not go.31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They *said, "The first." Jesus *said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you.32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even feel remorse afterward so as to believe him.

Parable of the Landowner

33 "Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT AND DUG A WINE PRESS IN IT, AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey.34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce.35 The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third.36 Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them.37 But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'38 But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.'39 They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.40 Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?"41 They *said to Him, "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons."

42 Jesus *said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures,
'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,
THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;
THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD,
AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'?43 Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it.44 And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.46 When they sought to seize Him, they feared the people, because they considered Him to be a prophet.
