MATTEUS 22

Die gelykenis van die bruilof

(Luk. 14:15-24)

1 Jesus het weer in gelykenisse met die mense gepraat. 2 Hy het gesê: “Met die koninkryk van die hemel gaan dit soos met 'n koning wat vir sy seun 'n bruilofsfees voorberei het. 3 Hy het sy slawe uitgestuur om die genooides na die bruilof te roep, maar hulle wou nie kom nie. 4 Toe stuur hy weer ander slawe met die opdrag: ‘Sê vir die genooides: Die maaltyd is reg; my beeste en vetgemaakte vee is geslag, en alles is gereed. Kom na die bruilof toe.’

5 “Maar die genooides het hulle nie daaraan gesteur nie, en die een het na sy stuk grond en 'n ander een na sy werkplek toe gegaan. 6 En party het sy slawe gegryp en mishandel en doodgemaak. 7 Die koning het kwaad geword en sy leër gestuur om daardie moordenaars dood te maak en hulle stad aan die brand te steek.

8 “Toe sê hy vir sy slawe: ‘Alles staan klaar vir die bruilofsfees, maar die genooides was dit nie werd nie. 9 Gaan nou uit na die straathoeke en nooi soveel mense as wat julle teenkom, na die bruilofsfees toe.’ 10 Toe het daardie slawe uitgegaan op die strate en almal wat hulle gekry het, bymekaargemaak, slegtes sowel as goeies. So het die feessaal vol gaste geword.

11 “Toe die koning ingaan om na die gaste te kyk, sien hy daar 'n man wat nie bruilofsklere aanhet nie, 12 en hy sê vir hom: ‘Vriend, hoe het jy hier ingekom sonder bruilofsklere aan?’ Maar die man kon niks antwoord nie. 13 Toe sê die koning vir sy dienaars: ‘Bind sy hande en sy voete vas en gooi hom uit in die diepste duisternis daarbuite. Daar sal hulle huil en op hulle tande kners.’

14 “Baie is immers geroep, maar min is uitverkies.”

Die vraag oor die betaal van belasting

(Mark. 12:13-17; Luk. 20:20-26)

15 Toe het die Fariseërs gaan besluit om Jesus met 'n vraag in 'n val te lok. 16 Hulle stuur toe van hulle volgelinge saam met 'n aantal Herodiane om vir Hom te sê: “Meneer, ons weet dat u iemand is wat u mening eerlik uitspreek en getrou aan die waarheid die wil van God bekend maak sonder om mense in aanmerking te neem, want u let nie op die aansien van persone nie. 17 Sê vir ons wat dink u: Is dit reg om aan die keiser belasting te betaal, of is dit nie?”

18 Maar Jesus het deur hulle valsheid gesien en vir hulle gesê: “Huigelaars! Waarom stel julle vir My 'n strik? 19 Wys vir My die muntstuk waarmee die belasting betaal word.” Hulle bring toe die muntstuk vir Hom,

20 en Hy vra vir hulle: “Wie se kop en naam is hierop?”

21 “Die keiser s'n,” antwoord hulle. Jesus sê vir hulle: “Gee dan aan die keiser wat aan die keiser behoort, en aan God wat aan God behoort.”

22 Toe hulle dit hoor, was hulle verbaas en het hulle Hom met rus gelaat en weggegaan.

Die vraag oor die opstanding uit die dood

(Mark. 12:18-27; Luk. 20:27-40)

23 Op dieselfde dag het daar Sadduseërs by Jesus gekom. Dit is hulle wat beweer dat daar nie 'n opstanding is nie. Hulle vra Hom toe: 24 “Meneer, Moses het gesê: ‘As iemand sterwe sonder om kinders te hê, moet sy broer met die weduwee trou en 'n nageslag vir sy broer verwek.’t 25 Nou was daar by ons sewe broers. Die oudste het getrou en gesterwe. Omdat daar nie kinders was nie, het sy broer met die weduwee getrou. 26 Dieselfde het gebeur met die tweede en die derde broer en uiteindelik met al sewe. 27 En heel laaste van almal het die vrou ook gesterwe. 28 Met die opstanding dan, wie se vrou sal sy wees? Al sewe het haar mos as vrou gehad.”

29 Maar Jesus antwoord hulle: “Julle dwaal omdat julle nie die Skrif en ook nie die krag van God ken nie. 30 Met die opstanding trou die mense nie meer nie, maar is hulle soos die engele in die hemel. 31 En wat die opstanding van die dooies betref, het julle dan nie gelees wat God vir julle gesê het nie: 32 ‘Ek is die God van Abraham, die God van Isak, en die God van Jakob’t? Hy is nie die God van dooies nie maar van lewendes.”

33 Toe die skare dit hoor, was hulle verslae oor sy leer.

Die vraag oor die grootste gebod

(Mark. 12:28-34; Luk. 10:25-28)

34 Toe die Fariseërs hoor dat Jesus die Sadduseërs die mond gesnoer het, het hulle bymekaargekom, 35 en een van hulle, 'n wetgeleerde, het Hom met 'n vraag probeer vastrek. 36 “Meneer,” vra hy, “wat is die grootste gebod in die wet?”

37 Jesus antwoord hom: “ ‘Jy moet die Here jou God liefhê met jou hele hart en met jou hele siel’t en met jou hele verstand. 38 Dit is die grootste en die eerste gebod. 39 En die tweede, wat hiermee gelyk staan, is: ‘Jy moet jou naaste liefhê soos jouself.’t 40 In hierdie twee gebooie is die hele wet en die profete saamgevat.”

Die vraag oor die Seun van Dawid

(Mark. 12:35-37; Luk. 20:41-44)

41 Toe die Fariseërs bymekaar was, vra Jesus vir hulle: 42 “Wat dink julle van die Christus? Wie se seun is Hy?” “Dawid s'n,” antwoord hulle Hom.

43 Hy sê toe vir hulle: “Waarom het Dawid deur die ingewing van die Gees Hom dan ‘Here’ genoem? Hy sê tog:

44 “ ‘Die Here het vir my Here gesê: Sit aan my regterhand totdat Ek jou vyande aan jou onderwerp het.’t

45 “As Dawid self Hom ‘Here’ noem, hoe kan Hy dan Dawid se seun wees?” 46 Niemand kon Hom daarop iets antwoord nie. Van dié dag af het niemand dit meer gewaag om Hom 'n vraag te stel nie.

Matthew 22

1 AND Jesus answering, spoke again in parables to them, saying:2 The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king, who made a marriage for his son.3 And he sent his servants, to call them that were invited to the marriage; and they would not come.4 Again he sent other servants, saying: Tell them that were invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my beeves and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come ye to the marriage.5 But they neglected, and went their own ways, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise.6 And the rest laid hands on his servants, and having treated them contumeliously, put them to death.7 But when the king had heard of it, he was angry, and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city.8 Then he saith to his servants: The marriage indeed is ready; but they that were invited were not worthy.9 Go ye therefore into the highways; and as many as you shall find, call to the marriage.10 And his servants going forth into the ways, gathered together all that they found, both bad and good: and the marriage was filled with guests.11 And the king went in to see the guests: and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment.12 And he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? But he was silent.13 Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.14 For many are called, but few are chosen.15 Then the Pharisees going, consulted among themselves how to insnare him in his speech.16 And they sent to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou dost not regard the person of men.17 Tell us therefore what dost thou think, is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?18 But Jesus knowing their wickedness, said: Why do you tempt me, ye hypocrites?19 Shew me the coin of the tribute. And they offered him a penny.20 And Jesus saith to them: Whose image and inscription is this?21 They say to him: Caesar's. Then he saith to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God, the things that are God's.22 And hearing this they wondered, and leaving him, went their ways.23 That day there came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and asked him,24 Saying: Master, Moses said: If a man die having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up issue to his brother.25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first having married a wife, died; and not having issue, left his wife to his brother.26 In like manner the second, and the third, and so on to the seventh.27 And last of all the woman died also.28 At the resurrection therefore whose wife of the seven shall she be? for they all had her.29 And Jesus answering, said to them: You err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.30 For in the resurrection they shall neither marry nor be married; but shall be as the angels of God in heaven.31 And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken by God, saying to you:32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.33 And the multitudes hearing it, were in admiration at his doctrine.34 But the Pharisees hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, came together:35 And one of them, a doctor of the law, asking him, tempting him:36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.41 And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them,42 Saying: What think you of Christ? whose son is he? They say to him: David's.43 He saith to them: How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying:44 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool?45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?46 And no man was able to answer him a word; neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
