A che cosa assomiglia il Regno di Dio.

1 Gesù raccontò molte altre parabole per rendere bene l’idea del Regno dei Cieli.2 « Per esempio », disse, « il Regno dei Cieli può essere illustrato dalla storia di un re che fece preparare un grande pranzo di nozze per il figlio.3 Erano state invitate molte persone, e quando il banchetto fu pronto, il re mandò i suoi messaggeri ad avvertire gli ospiti che era tempo di venire. Ma tutti rifiutarono.4 Allora mandò altri servi a dir loro: “Affrettatevi, perché tutto è pronto e l’arrosto è già nel forno!”5 Ma quelli che aveva invitato si limitarono a ridere ed ognuno andò per i fatti propri: chi nei campi, chi al proprio negozio.6 Altri, addirittura, malmenarono i messaggeri del re, li oltraggiarono e ne uccisero perfino alcuni.7 Allora il re, adirato, mandò il suo esercito ad uccidere quegli assassini e a bruciare la loro città.8 Poi disse ai suoi servi: “Il banchetto è pronto, ma gli ospiti che ho invitato non erano degni di parteciparvi.9 Uscite allora, e mettetevi agli angoli delle strade ad invitare tutti quelli che vedrete!”10 I servi ubbidirono e condussero tutti quelli che trovarono: buoni e cattivi. E la sala del banchetto fu piena.11 Ma, quando il re entrò per vedere gli invitati, notò un uomo che non indossava l’abito da cerimonia.12 “Amico”, gli chiese, “come mai sei qui senza l’abito da cerimonia?” L’uomo non rispose.13 Allora il re comandò ai suoi servi “Legatelo, mani e piedi, e gettatelo fuori nelle tenebre, dove c’è pianto e stridor di denti”.14 Perché molti sono chiamati, ma pochi ammessi ».15 Allora i farisei si riunirono per trovare il modo di intrappolare Gesù, facendogli dire qualcosa di compromettente, tanto da poterlo arrestare.16 Decisero di mandare alcuni dei loro uomini insieme con gli Erodiani a porgli questa domanda: « Signore, sappiamo che tu sei molto onesto, insegni la volontà di Dio e non ti preoccupi di ciò che pensa la gente, perché non guardi in faccia nessuno.17 Dicci ora, è giusto o no pagare le tasse al governo romano? »18 Ma Gesù capì a che cosa miravano.
« Ipocriti! » esclamò, « chi volete ingannare con le vostre domande?19 Fatemi vedere una moneta ». Gli diedero un denaro romano. E Gesù domandò:20 « Di chi è questa effigie? E di chi è il nome sotto l’effigie? »21 « Di Cesare », risposero. « Bene, allora », disse Gesù, « datelo a Cesare, se è di Cesare, ma date a Dio tutto ciò che è di Dio! »22 A questa risposta rimasero sorpresi e confusi, e se ne andarono via.23 Quello stesso giorno, alcuni dei Sadducei (che dicevano che non c’è risurrezione dopo la morte), vennero a porgli un’altra domanda:24 « Signore, Mosè disse che se un uomo muore senza figli, suo fratello deve sposarne la vedova, e il primo figlio che verrà erediterà il nome e la proprietà del morto.25 Ebbene, v’era fra di noi una famiglia di sette fratelli. Il primo si sposò, poi morì senza figli, così la vedova divenne moglie del secondo fratello.26 Però anche questi morì senza figli, quindi la moglie passò al fratello successivo, e così via, finché non fu moglie di ognuno di loro.27 Alla fine anch’ella morì.28 Ti chiediamo allora: alla risurrezione, di chi sarà moglie quella donna, poiché è stata moglie di tutti e sette?! »29 Gesù rispose: « Voi sbagliate, perché non conoscete le Scritture, né la potenza di Dio.30 Perché alla risurrezione non c’è matrimonio; sia gli uomini che le donne sono tutti come gli angeli del cielo.31 E in quanto ad esserci o meno la risurrezione dalla morte, non avete mai letto le Scritture? Non vi rendete conto che Dio parlava per voi, quando disse:32 “Io sono il Dio di Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe”? Perché Dio non è il Dio dei morti, ma dei vivi! »33 La folla rimase profondamente colpita dalle sue risposte,34-35 ma non i Farisei. Quando videro che con quelle parole aveva chiuso la bocca ai Sadducei, escogitarono una nuova domanda da fargli.
Uno di loro, avvocato, gli chiese:36 « Signore, qual è il comandamento più importante fra tutte le leggi di Mosè? »37 Gesù rispose: « “Ama il Signore, il Dio tuo, con tutto il tuo cuore, la tua anima e la tua mente”.38-39 Questo è il comandamento più importante e più grande. Il secondo di grande importanza è simile a questo: “Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso”.40 Tutti gli altri comandamenti e tutti gli ordini dei profeti si racchiudono in questi due comandamenti e si compiono se voi li osservate. Obbedite soltanto a questi due, e scoprirete che state rispettando anche tutti gli altri ».41 Una volta che era attorniato dai Farisei, Gesù fece loro una domanda:42 « Che cosa ne pensate del Messia? Di chi è discendente? » « Di Davide », risposero quelli.43 « Allora, come si spiega che Davide, parlando per ispirazione dello Spirito Santo, lo chiama “Signore”? », chiese Gesù. « Infatti Davide ha scritto:44 “Dio disse al mio Signore: siedi alla mia destra, finché non ti metta sotto i piedi i tuoi nemici”.45 Dunque, se Davide lo chiamò “Signore”, come può essere suo discendente? »46 I Farisei non riuscirono a rispondere. E da quel giorno nessuno osò più fare domande a Gesù.

Matthew 22

1 And Jesus answered and spake again in parables unto them, saying,2 The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,3 and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the marriage feast: and they would not come.4 Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them that are bidden, Behold, I have made ready my dinner; my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come to the marriage feast.5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise;6 and the rest laid hold on his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.7 But the king was wroth; and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they that were bidden were not worthy.9 Go ye therefore unto the partings of the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage feast.10 And those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was filled with guests.11 But when the king came in to behold the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding-garment:12 and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding-garment? And he was speechless.13 Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.14 For many are called, but few chosen.

15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might ensnare him in his talk.16 And they send to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one: for thou regardest not the person of men.17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?19 Show me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a denarius.20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.22 And when they heard it, they marvelled, and left him, and went away.

23 On that day there came to him Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection: and they asked him,24 saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first married and deceased, and having no seed left his wife unto his brother;26 in like manner the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.27 And after them all, the woman died.28 In the resurrection therefore whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.29 But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven.31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.33 And when the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

34 But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered themselves together.35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, trying him:36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?37 And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.38 This is the great and first commandment.39 And a second like unto it is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.40 On these two commandments the whole law hangeth, and the prophets.

41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,42 saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The son of David.43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,

44 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies underneath thy feet?

45 If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son?46 And no one was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
