Matteo 22

Parabola delle nozze

1 Gesú ricominciò a parlare loro in parabole, dicendo:
2 «Il regno dei cieli è simile a un re, il quale fece le nozze di suo figlio.3 Mandò i suoi servi a chiamare gli invitati alle nozze; ma questi non vollero venire.4 Mandò una seconda volta altri servi, dicendo: “Dite agli invitati: Io ho preparato il mio pranzo; i miei buoi e i miei animali ingrassati sono ammazzati; tutto è pronto; venite alle nozze”.5 Ma quelli, non curandosene, se ne andarono, chi al suo campo, chi al suo commercio;6 altri poi, presero i suoi servi, li maltrattarono e li uccisero.7 Allora il re si adirò, mandò le sue truppe a sterminare quegli omicidi e a bruciare la loro città.8 Quindi disse ai suoi servi: “Le nozze sono pronte, ma gli invitati non ne erano degni.9 Andate dunque ai crocicchi delle strade e chiamate alle nozze quanti troverete”.10 E quei servi, usciti per le strade, radunarono tutti quelli che trovarono, cattivi e buoni; e la sala delle nozze fu piena di commensali.11 Ora il re entrò per vedere quelli che erano a tavola e notò là un uomo che non aveva l'abito di nozze.12 E gli disse: “Amico, come sei entrato qui senza avere un abito di nozze?” E costui rimase con la bocca chiusa.13 Allora il re disse ai servitori: “Legatelo mani e piedi e gettatelo nelle tenebre di fuori. Lí sarà il pianto e lo stridor dei denti”.

14 Poiché molti sono i chiamati, ma pochi gli eletti».

Il tributo a Cesare

15 Allora i farisei si ritirarono e tennero consiglio per vedere di coglierlo in fallo nelle sue parole.
16 E gli mandarono i loro discepoli con gli erodiani a dirgli: «Maestro, noi sappiamo che sei sincero e insegni la via di Dio secondo verità, e non hai riguardi per nessuno, perché non badi all'apparenza delle persone.17 Dicci dunque: Che te ne pare? È lecito, o no, pagare il tributo a Cesare?»18 Ma Gesú, conoscendo la loro malizia, disse: «Perché mi tentate, ipocriti?19 Mostratemi la moneta del tributo». Ed essi gli porsero un denaro.20 Ed egli domandò loro: «Di chi è questa effigie e questa iscrizione?»21 Gli risposero: «Di Cesare». E Gesú disse loro: «Rendete dunque a Cesare quello che è di Cesare, e a Dio quello che è di Dio».

22 Ed essi, udito ciò, si stupirono e, lasciatolo, se ne andarono.

Dibattito sulla risurrezione

23 In quello stesso giorno vennero a lui dei sadducei, i quali dicono che non vi è risurrezione, e gli domandarono:24 «Maestro, Mosè ha detto: “Se uno muore senza figli, il fratello suo sposi la moglie di lui e dia una discendenza a suo fratello”.25 Vi erano tra di noi sette fratelli; il primo, ammogliatosi, morí; e, non avendo prole, lasciò sua moglie a suo fratello.26 Lo stesso fece pure il secondo, poi il terzo, fino al settimo.27 Infine, dopo tutti, morí anche la donna.28 Alla risurrezione, dunque, di quale dei sette sarà ella moglie? Poiché tutti l'hanno avuta».29 Ma Gesú rispose loro: «Voi errate, perché non conoscete le Scritture, né la potenza di Dio.30 Perché alla risurrezione non si prende né si dà moglie; ma i risorti sono come angeli nei cieli.31 Quanto poi alla risurrezione dei morti, non avete letto quello che vi è stato detto da Dio:32 “Io sono il Dio d'Abraamo, il Dio d'Isacco e il Dio di Giacobbe”? Egli non è il Dio dei morti, ma dei vivi».

33 E la folla, udite queste cose, stupiva del suo insegnamento.

Il gran comandamento

34 I farisei, udito che egli aveva chiuso la bocca ai sadducei, si radunarono;35 e uno di loro, dottore della legge, gli domandò, per metterlo alla prova:36 «Maestro, qual è, nella legge, il gran comandamento?»37 Gesú gli disse: «“Ama il Signore Dio tuo con tutto il tuo cuore, con tutta la tua anima e con tutta la tua mente”.38 Questo è il grande e il primo comandamento.39 Il secondo, simile a questo, è: “Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso”.

40 Da questi due comandamenti dipendono tutta la legge e i profeti».

Gesú interroga i farisei

41 Essendo i farisei riuniti, Gesú li interrogò,42 dicendo: «Che cosa pensate del Cristo? Di chi è figlio?» Essi gli risposero: «Di Davide».

43 Ed egli a loro: «Come mai dunque Davide, ispirato dallo Spirito, lo chiama Signore, dicendo:

44 “Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: `Siedi alla mia destra finché io abbia messo i tuoi nemici sotto i tuoi piedi?´”
45 Se dunque Davide lo chiama Signore, come può essere suo figlio?»

46 E nessuno poteva replicargli parola; da quel giorno nessuno ardí piú interrogarlo.

MATTHEW 22

The Great Banquet

(Luke 14.15-24)

1 Once again Jesus used stories to teach the people:
2 The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a king gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3 The king sent some servants to tell the invited guests to come to the banquet, but the guests refused.

4 He sent other servants to say to the guests, “The banquet is ready! My cattle and prize calves have all been prepared. Everything is ready. Come to the banquet!”
5 But the guests did not pay any attention. Some of them left for their farms, and some went to their places of business.

6 Others grabbed the servants, then beat them up and killed them.
7 This made the king so furious that he sent an army to kill those murderers and burn down their city. 8 Then he said to the servants, “It is time for the wedding banquet, and the invited guests don't deserve to come. 9 Go out to the street corners and tell everyone you meet to come to the banquet.”

10 They went out on the streets and brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike. And the banquet room was filled with guests.
11 When the king went in to meet the guests, he found that one of them wasn't wearing the right kind of clothes for the wedding. 12 The king asked, “Friend, why didn't you wear proper clothes for the wedding?” But the guest had no excuse. 13 t So the king gave orders for this person to be tied hand and foot and to be thrown outside into the dark. That's where people will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

14 t Many are invited, but only a few are chosen.

Paying Taxes

(Mark 12.13-17; Luke 20.20-26)

17 Tell us what you think! Should we pay taxes to the Emperor or not?”
18 Jesus knew their evil thoughts and said, “Why are you trying to test me? You show-offs! 19 Let me see one of the coins used for paying taxes.” They brought him a silver coin,

20 and he asked, “Whose picture and name are on it?”

21 “The Emperor's,” they answered.
Then Jesus told them, “Give the Emperor what belongs to him and give God what belongs to God.”

22 His answer surprised them so much that they walked away.

Life in the Future World

(Mark 12.18-27; Luke 20.27-40)

23  t The Sadducees did not believe people would rise to life after death. So that same day some of the Sadducees came to Jesus and said:

24  t Teacher, Moses wrote that if a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry the widow. Their first son would then be thought of as the son of the dead brother.
25 Once there were seven brothers who lived here. The first one married, but died without having any children. So his wife was left to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brothers and finally to all seven of them. 27 At last the woman died.

28 When God raises people from death, whose wife will this woman be? She had been married to all seven brothers.

29 Jesus answered:
You are completely wrong! You don't know what the Scriptures teach. And you don't know anything about the power of God. 30 t When God raises people to life, they won't marry. They will be like the angels in heaven. 31 And as for people being raised to life, God was speaking to you when he said,

32 t “I am the God worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”t He isn't the God of the dead, but of the living.

33 The crowds were surprised to hear what Jesus was teaching.

The Most Important //Commandment

(Mark 12.28-34; Luke 10.25-28)

36 “Teacher, what is the most important commandment in the Law?”

37  t Jesus answered:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. 38 This is the first and most important commandment. 39 t The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, “Love others as much as you love yourself.”

40 All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophetst are based on these two commandments.

About David's Son

(Mark 12.35-37; Luke 20.41-44)

42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose family will he come from?”
They answered, “He will be a son of King David.”t

43 Jesus replied, “How then could the Spirit lead David to call the Messiah his Lord? David said,

44  t ‘The Lord said to my Lord:
Sit at my right sidet
until I make your enemies
into a footstool for you.’
45 If David called the Messiah his Lord, how can the Messiah be a son of King David?” 46 No one was able to give Jesus an answer, and from that day on, no one dared ask him any more questions.
