EVANGELO SECONDO S. MATTEO 22

1 E Gesù prese di nuovo a parlar loro in parabole dicendo: 2 Il regno de' cieli è simile ad un re, il quale fece le nozze del suo figliuolo. 3 E mandò i suoi servitori a chiamare gl'invitati alle nozze; ma questi non vollero venire. 4 Di nuovo mandò degli altri servitori, dicendo: Dite agli invitati: Ecco, io ho preparato il mio pranzo; i miei buoi ed i miei animali ingrassati sono ammazzati, e tutto è pronto; venite alle nozze. 5 Ma quelli, non curandosene, se n'andarono, chi al suo campo, chi al suo traffico; 6 gli altri poi, presi i suoi servitori, li oltraggiarono e li uccisero. 7 Allora il re s'adirò, e mandò le sue truppe a sterminare quegli omicidi e ad ardere la loro città. 8 Quindi disse ai suoi servitori: Le nozze, si, sono pronte; ma gl'invitati non ne erano degni. 9 Andate dunque sui crocicchi delle strade e chiamate alle nozze quanti troverete. 10 E quei servitori, usciti per le strade, raunarono tutti quelli che trovarono, cattivi e buoni; e la sala delle nozze fu ripiena di commensali. 11 Or il re, entrato per vedere quelli che erano a tavola, notò quivi un uomo che non vestiva l'abito di nozze. 12 E gli disse: Amico, come sei entrato qua senza aver un abito da nozze? E colui ebbe la bocca chiusa. 13 Allora il re disse ai servitori: Legatelo mani e piedi e gettatelo nelle tenebre di fuori. Ivi sarà il pianto e lo stridor de' denti. 14 Poiché molti son chiamati, ma pochi eletti. 15 Allora i Farisei, ritiratisi, tennero consiglio per veder di coglierlo in fallo nelle sue parole. 16 E gli mandarono i loro discepoli con gli Erodiani a dirgli: Maestro, noi sappiamo che sei verace e insegni la via di Dio secondo verità, e non ti curi d'alcuno, perché non guardi all'apparenza delle persone. 17 Dicci dunque: Che te ne pare? È egli lecito pagare il tributo a Cesare, o no? 18 Ma Gesù, conosciuta la loro malizia, disse: Perché mi tentate, ipocriti? 19 Mostratemi la moneta del tributo. Ed essi gli porsero un denaro. Ed egli domandò loro: 20 Di chi è questa effigie e questa iscrizione? 21 Gli risposero: Di Cesare. Allora egli disse loro: Rendete dunque a Cesare quel ch'è di Cesare, e a Dio quel ch'è di Dio. 22 Ed essi, udito ciò, si maravigliarono; e, lasciatolo, se ne andarono. 23 In quell'istesso giorno vennero a lui de' Sadducei, i quali dicono che non v'è risurrezione, e gli domandarono: 24 Maestro, Mosè ha detto: Se uno muore senza figliuoli, il fratel suo sposi la moglie di lui e susciti progenie al suo fratello. 25 Or v'erano fra di noi sette fratelli; e il primo, ammogliatosi, morì; e, non avendo prole, lasciò sua moglie al suo fratello. 26 Lo stesso fece pure il secondo, poi il terzo, fino al settimo. 27 Infine, dopo tutti, morì anche la donna. 28 Alla risurrezione, dunque, di quale dei sette sarà ella moglie? Poiché tutti l'hanno avuta. 29 Ma Gesù, rispondendo, disse loro: Voi errate, perché non conoscete le Scritture, né la potenza di Dio. 30 Perché alla risurrezione né si prende né si dà moglie; ma i risorti son come angeline' cieli. 31 Quanto poi alla risurrezione dei morti, non avete voi letto quel che vi fu insegnato da Dio, 32 quando disse: Io sono l'Iddio di Abramo e l'Iddio d'Isacco e l'Iddio di Giacobbe? Egli non è l'Iddio de' morti, ma de' viventi. 33 E le turbe, udite queste cose, stupivano della sua dottrina. 34 Or i Farisei, udito ch'egli avea chiusa la bocca a' Sadducei, si raunarono insieme; 35 e uno di loro, dottor della legge, gli domandò, per metterlo alla prova: 36 Maestro, qual è, nella legge, il gran comandamento? 37 E Gesù gli disse: Ama il Signore Iddio tuo con tutto il tuo cuore e con tutta l'anima tua e con tutta la mente tua. 38 Questo è il grande e il primo comandamento. 39 Il secondo, simile ad esso, è: Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso. 40 Da questi due comandamenti dipendono tutta la legge ed i profeti. 41 Or essendo i Farisei raunati, Gesù li interrogò dicendo: 42 Che vi par egli del Cristo? di chi è egli figliuolo? Essi gli risposero: Di Davide. 43 Ed egli a loro: Come dunque Davide, parlando per lo Spirito, lo chiama Signore, dicendo: 44 Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra finché io abbia posto i tuoi nemici sotto i tuoi piedi? 45 Se dunque Davide lo chiama Signore, com'è egli suo figliuolo? 46 E nessuno potea replicargli parola; e da quel giorno nessuno ardì più interrogarlo.

MATTHEW 22

The Great Banquet

(Luke 14.15-24)

1 Once again Jesus used stories to teach the people:
2 The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a king gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3 The king sent some servants to tell the invited guests to come to the banquet, but the guests refused.

4 He sent other servants to say to the guests, “The banquet is ready! My cattle and prize calves have all been prepared. Everything is ready. Come to the banquet!”
5 But the guests did not pay any attention. Some of them left for their farms, and some went to their places of business.

6 Others grabbed the servants, then beat them up and killed them.
7 This made the king so furious that he sent an army to kill those murderers and burn down their city. 8 Then he said to the servants, “It is time for the wedding banquet, and the invited guests don't deserve to come. 9 Go out to the street corners and tell everyone you meet to come to the banquet.”

10 They went out on the streets and brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike. And the banquet room was filled with guests.
11 When the king went in to meet the guests, he found that one of them wasn't wearing the right kind of clothes for the wedding. 12 The king asked, “Friend, why didn't you wear proper clothes for the wedding?” But the guest had no excuse. 13 t So the king gave orders for this person to be tied hand and foot and to be thrown outside into the dark. That's where people will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

14 t Many are invited, but only a few are chosen.

Paying Taxes

(Mark 12.13-17; Luke 20.20-26)

17 Tell us what you think! Should we pay taxes to the Emperor or not?”
18 Jesus knew their evil thoughts and said, “Why are you trying to test me? You show-offs! 19 Let me see one of the coins used for paying taxes.” They brought him a silver coin,

20 and he asked, “Whose picture and name are on it?”

21 “The Emperor's,” they answered.
Then Jesus told them, “Give the Emperor what belongs to him and give God what belongs to God.”

22 His answer surprised them so much that they walked away.

Life in the Future World

(Mark 12.18-27; Luke 20.27-40)

23  t The Sadducees did not believe people would rise to life after death. So that same day some of the Sadducees came to Jesus and said:

24  t Teacher, Moses wrote that if a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry the widow. Their first son would then be thought of as the son of the dead brother.
25 Once there were seven brothers who lived here. The first one married, but died without having any children. So his wife was left to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brothers and finally to all seven of them. 27 At last the woman died.

28 When God raises people from death, whose wife will this woman be? She had been married to all seven brothers.

29 Jesus answered:
You are completely wrong! You don't know what the Scriptures teach. And you don't know anything about the power of God. 30 t When God raises people to life, they won't marry. They will be like the angels in heaven. 31 And as for people being raised to life, God was speaking to you when he said,

32 t “I am the God worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”t He isn't the God of the dead, but of the living.

33 The crowds were surprised to hear what Jesus was teaching.

The Most Important //Commandment

(Mark 12.28-34; Luke 10.25-28)

36 “Teacher, what is the most important commandment in the Law?”

37  t Jesus answered:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. 38 This is the first and most important commandment. 39 t The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, “Love others as much as you love yourself.”

40 All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophetst are based on these two commandments.

About David's Son

(Mark 12.35-37; Luke 20.41-44)

42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose family will he come from?”
They answered, “He will be a son of King David.”t

43 Jesus replied, “How then could the Spirit lead David to call the Messiah his Lord? David said,

44  t ‘The Lord said to my Lord:
Sit at my right sidet
until I make your enemies
into a footstool for you.’
45 If David called the Messiah his Lord, how can the Messiah be a son of King David?” 46 No one was able to give Jesus an answer, and from that day on, no one dared ask him any more questions.
