La fiesta de bodas

1 Una vez más, Jesús les puso un ejemplo a los sacerdotes , a los líderes judíos y a los fariseos :

2 «En el reino de Dios pasa lo mismo que cuando un rey hizo una fiesta para celebrar la boda de su hijo.3 El rey envió a sus sirvientes para que llamaran a los invitados a la fiesta. Pero los invitados no quisieron ir.

4 Entonces el rey envió a otros sirvientes con este mensaje: “La comida ya está lista. He mandado preparar la carne de mis mejores terneros. ¡Vengan a la fiesta!”
5 »Pero los invitados no hicieron caso, y cada uno se fue a hacer otras cosas. Uno fue a ver sus terrenos, otro fue a atender su negocio,

6 y los otros agarraron a los sirvientes del rey y los mataron a golpes.
7 »El rey se enojó mucho, y envió a sus soldados para que mataran a esos invitados y quemaran la ciudad donde vivían.8 Luego, el rey dijo a sus sirvientes: “La fiesta de bodas está lista, y aquellos invitados no merecían venir.

9 Vayan por las calles, e inviten a todos los que encuentren para que vengan a la fiesta de bodas.”

10 »Los sirvientes fueron a las calles de la ciudad e invitaron a muchas personas, unas malas y otras buenas; y así el salón de la fiesta se llenó de invitados.
11 »Cuando el rey entró al salón para conocer a los invitados, vio a uno que no estaba bien vestido para la fiesta,

12 y le dijo: “¡Oye, tú! ¿Cómo hiciste para entrar, si no estás vestido para la fiesta?”
»Pero él no contestó nada.

13 Entonces el rey les ordenó a sus sirvientes: “Átenlo de pies y manos, y échenlo afuera, a la oscuridad; allí la gente llora y rechina de terror los dientes.”

14 »Esto pasa porque son muchos los invitados a participar en el reino de Dios, pero son muy pocos aquellos a los que Dios acepta.»

Una trampa para Jesús

15 Un día, los fariseos se reunieron y decidieron ponerle una trampa a Jesús, para hacer que dijera algo malo.

16 Mandaron a algunos de sus seguidores, junto con unos partidarios del rey Herodes, para que dijeran a Jesús:

—Maestro, sabemos que siempre dices la verdad. Tú le enseñas a la gente que debe obedecer a Dios en todo. No te importa lo que digan los demás acerca de tus enseñanzas, porque tú no hablas para quedar bien con ellos.

17 Dinos ahora qué opinas: ¿Está bien que le paguemos impuestos al emperador de Roma, o no?

18 Pero como Jesús conocía las malas intenciones que tenían, les dijo:

—¡Hipócritas! ¿Por qué quieren ponerme una trampa?

19 Muéstrenme una de las monedas que se usan para pagar el impuesto.

Entonces le trajeron una moneda de plata,

20 y Jesús les preguntó:

—¿De quién es la imagen que está en la moneda? ¿De quién es el nombre que tiene escrito?

21 Ellos contestaron:

—Del emperador romano.

Jesús les dijo:

—Pues denle al emperador lo que es del emperador, y a Dios lo que es de Dios.

22 Los fariseos quedaron asombrados al escuchar la respuesta, y se fueron.

Los saduceos hablan con Jesús

23 Ese mismo día, unos saduceos fueron a ver a Jesús. Los saduceos no creían que los muertos pueden volver a vivir,

24 y por eso le preguntaron:

—Maestro, Moisés escribió que, si un hombre muere sin tener hijos con su esposa, el hermano de ese hombre debe casarse con la viuda y tener hijos con ella. De acuerdo con la Ley , esos hijos le pertenecen al hermano muerto y llevan su nombre.
25 »Pues bien, aquí vivieron una vez siete hermanos. El hermano mayor se casó, y tiempo más tarde murió sin tener hijos. Entonces el hermano que seguía se casó con la mujer que dejó el mayor,26 pero, tiempo después, también él murió sin tener hijos. Con el tercer hermano pasó lo mismo. Y así pasó con los siete hermanos.

27 Finalmente, murió la mujer.

28 »Ahora bien, cuando Dios haga que los muertos vuelvan a vivir, ¿de quién será esposa esta mujer, si estuvo casada con los siete?

29 Jesús contestó:

—Ustedes están equivocados. Ni saben lo que dice la Biblia , ni conocen el poder de Dios.30 Cuando Dios haga que los muertos vuelvan a vivir, nadie se va a casar, porque todos serán como los ángeles del cielo.31 Y en cuanto a si los muertos vuelven a vivir, ustedes pueden leer en la Biblia lo que Dios le dijo a Moisés:

32 “Yo soy el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob, tus antepasados ”. Por tanto, Dios no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos, pues para Dios todos ellos están vivos. t

33 Al oír las enseñanzas de Jesús, la gente que estaba allí se quedó asombrada.

Los dos mandamientos más importantes

34 Cuando los fariseos se dieron cuenta de que Jesús había dejado callados a los saduceos , se reunieron y fueron a ver a Jesús.

35 Uno de ellos, que sabía mucho acerca de la ley de los judíos, quiso ponerle una trampa y le preguntó:

36 —Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más importante de todos?

37-38 Jesús le respondió:

—El primer mandamiento, y el más importante, es el que dice así: “Ama a tu Dios con todo lo que piensas y con todo lo que eres.”39 Y el segundo mandamiento en importancia es parecido a ése, y dice así: “Cada uno debe amar a su prójimo como se ama a sí mismo.”

40 Toda la enseñanza de la Biblia se basa en estos dos mandamientos.

La pregunta acerca del Mesías

41 Mientras los fariseos todavía estaban reunidos, Jesús les preguntó:

42 —¿A qué familia pertenecerá el Mesías ?

Ellos respondieron:

—A la familia del rey David.

43-45 Jesús les dijo:

—Con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, David escribió:

“Dios le dijo a mi Señor el Mesías:
‘Siéntate a la derecha de mi trono
hasta que yo derrote a tus enemigos.’”

»A ver, explíquenme: Si el rey David llama Señor al Mesías, ¿cómo puede el Mesías ser su descendiente ? ¡Hasta David lo considera más importante que él mismo!

46 Nadie pudo responderle a Jesús, y desde ese momento ya nadie se atrevió a hacerle más preguntas.

MATTHEW 22

The Great Banquet

(Luke 14.15-24)

1 Once again Jesus used stories to teach the people:
2 The kingdom of heaven is like what happened when a king gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3 The king sent some servants to tell the invited guests to come to the banquet, but the guests refused.

4 He sent other servants to say to the guests, “The banquet is ready! My cattle and prize calves have all been prepared. Everything is ready. Come to the banquet!”
5 But the guests did not pay any attention. Some of them left for their farms, and some went to their places of business.

6 Others grabbed the servants, then beat them up and killed them.
7 This made the king so furious that he sent an army to kill those murderers and burn down their city. 8 Then he said to the servants, “It is time for the wedding banquet, and the invited guests don't deserve to come. 9 Go out to the street corners and tell everyone you meet to come to the banquet.”

10 They went out on the streets and brought in everyone they could find, good and bad alike. And the banquet room was filled with guests.
11 When the king went in to meet the guests, he found that one of them wasn't wearing the right kind of clothes for the wedding. 12 The king asked, “Friend, why didn't you wear proper clothes for the wedding?” But the guest had no excuse. 13 t So the king gave orders for this person to be tied hand and foot and to be thrown outside into the dark. That's where people will cry and grit their teeth in pain.

14 t Many are invited, but only a few are chosen.

Paying Taxes

(Mark 12.13-17; Luke 20.20-26)

17 Tell us what you think! Should we pay taxes to the Emperor or not?”
18 Jesus knew their evil thoughts and said, “Why are you trying to test me? You show-offs! 19 Let me see one of the coins used for paying taxes.” They brought him a silver coin,

20 and he asked, “Whose picture and name are on it?”

21 “The Emperor's,” they answered.
Then Jesus told them, “Give the Emperor what belongs to him and give God what belongs to God.”

22 His answer surprised them so much that they walked away.

Life in the Future World

(Mark 12.18-27; Luke 20.27-40)

23  t The Sadducees did not believe people would rise to life after death. So that same day some of the Sadducees came to Jesus and said:

24  t Teacher, Moses wrote that if a married man dies and has no children, his brother should marry the widow. Their first son would then be thought of as the son of the dead brother.
25 Once there were seven brothers who lived here. The first one married, but died without having any children. So his wife was left to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brothers and finally to all seven of them. 27 At last the woman died.

28 When God raises people from death, whose wife will this woman be? She had been married to all seven brothers.

29 Jesus answered:
You are completely wrong! You don't know what the Scriptures teach. And you don't know anything about the power of God. 30 t When God raises people to life, they won't marry. They will be like the angels in heaven. 31 And as for people being raised to life, God was speaking to you when he said,

32 t “I am the God worshiped by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”t He isn't the God of the dead, but of the living.

33 The crowds were surprised to hear what Jesus was teaching.

The Most Important //Commandment

(Mark 12.28-34; Luke 10.25-28)

36 “Teacher, what is the most important commandment in the Law?”

37  t Jesus answered:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. 38 This is the first and most important commandment. 39 t The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, “Love others as much as you love yourself.”

40 All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophetst are based on these two commandments.

About David's Son

(Mark 12.35-37; Luke 20.41-44)

42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose family will he come from?”
They answered, “He will be a son of King David.”t

43 Jesus replied, “How then could the Spirit lead David to call the Messiah his Lord? David said,

44  t ‘The Lord said to my Lord:
Sit at my right sidet
until I make your enemies
into a footstool for you.’
45 If David called the Messiah his Lord, how can the Messiah be a son of King David?” 46 No one was able to give Jesus an answer, and from that day on, no one dared ask him any more questions.
