Die Heuchelei der Pharisäer und Schriftgelehrten

1 (Markus 12, 38-39; Lukas 20, 45-46)
Dann sprach Jesus zu der Volksmenge und zu seinen Jüngern:2 »Die Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer sind dazu eingesetzt, euch das Gesetz des Mose auszulegen.3 tRichtet euch nach ihren Vorschriften! Folgt aber nicht ihrem Beispiel! Denn sie selber tun nicht, was sie von den anderen verlangen.

4 tSie bürden den Menschen unerträgliche Lasten auf, doch sie selbst rühren keinen Finger, um diese Lasten zu tragen.5 tMit allem, was sie tun, stellen sie sich zur Schau. Am Arm tragen sie breite Gebetsriemen und an den Gewändern riesige Quasten.6 tBei euren Festen wollen sie die Ehrenplätze bekommen, und auch in der Synagoge sitzen sie stets in der ersten Reihe.7 Es gefällt ihnen, wenn man sie auf der Straße ehrfurchtsvoll grüßt und ›Meister‹ nennt.

8 Lasst ihr euch nicht so anreden! Nur Gott ist euer Meister, ihr seid untereinander alle Geschwister.9 Niemanden auf der Erde sollt ihr ›Vater‹ nennen, denn nur einer ist euer Vater: Gott im Himmel.10 Ihr sollt euch auch nicht Lehrer nennen lassen, weil ihr nur einen Lehrer habt: Christus.11 tWer unter euch groß sein will, der soll allen anderen dienen.12 tAlle, die sich selbst ehren, werden gedemütigt werden. Wer sich aber selbst erniedrigt, wird geehrt werden.«

Fromm und doch gottlos

13 (Lukas 11, 39-51)
»Wehe euch, ihr Pharisäer und Schriftgelehrten! Ihr seid Heuchler! Durch euch wird anderen der Zugang in die neue Welt Gottes versperrt. Ihr selbst geht nicht hinein, und die hinein wollen, hindert ihr daran.t

15 Wehe euch, ihr Scheinheiligen! Ihr reist über das Meer und durchquert jede Wüste, um nur einen einzigen Nichtjuden dafür zu gewinnen, eure Gesetze anzuerkennen. Aber wenn ihr einen gefunden habt, dann wird er durch euch ein Kind der Hölle, das euch an Bosheit noch übertrifft.

16 tWehe euch! Ihr seid selbst blind und wollt doch andere führen. So behauptet ihr: ›Beim Tempel Gottes schwören, das hat nichts zu bedeuten. Aber wer beim Gold im Tempel schwört, der muss seinen Eid halten.‹17 Ihr blinden Narren! Was zählt mehr: das Gold oder der Tempel, durch den das Gold erst geheiligt wird?

18 Ihr sagt: ›Ein Eid, beim Altar geschworen, hat keine Bedeutung. Wer aber bei dem Opfer auf dem Altar schwört, der muss sein Versprechen halten.‹19 Ihr Verblendeten! Was zählt denn mehr: die Gabe auf dem Altar oder der Altar, der die Gabe erst zum Opfer werden lässt?20 Wer beim Altar schwört, schwört bei allem, was darauf liegt.21 tWer beim Tempel schwört, der ruft Gott zum Zeugen an, der dort wohnt.22 tUnd wer beim Himmel schwört, schwört bei dem Thron Gottes und damit bei Gott selbst, der auf diesem Thron sitzt.

23 tWehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Sogar von Küchenkräutern wie Minze, Dill und Kümmel gebt ihr Gott den zehnten Teil. Aber die viel wichtigeren Forderungen Gottes nach Gerechtigkeit, Barmherzigkeit und Glauben sind euch gleichgültig. Doch gerade darum geht es hier: Das Wesentliche tun und das andere nicht unterlassen.24 Ihr aber entfernt jede kleine Mücke aus eurem Essen, doch ganze Kamele schluckt ihr bedenkenlos hinunter. Andere wollt ihr führen und seid doch selber blind!

25 tWehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Heuchler! Ihr poliert eure Becher und Schüsseln außen auf Hochglanz, so wie das Gesetz es erfordert. Doch gefüllt sind sie mit dem, was ihr in eurer maßlosen Gier anderen abgenommen habt.26 Ihr blinden Verführer, reinigt eure Becher erst einmal von innen, dann werden sie auch außen sauber sein.

27 Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr seid wie die gepflegten Grabstätten: von außen sauber und geschmückt, aber innen ist alles voll stinkender Verwesung.28 tIhr steht vor den Leuten als solche da, die Gott ehren, aber in Wirklichkeit seid ihr voller Bosheit und Heuchelei.

29 Wehe euch, ihr Schriftgelehrten und Pharisäer! Ihr Scheinheiligen! Den Propheten baut ihr Denkmäler, und die Gräber derer, die nach Gottes Willen lebten, schmückt ihr.30 Dazu behauptet ihr noch: ›Wenn wir damals gelebt hätten, wir hätten die Propheten nicht umgebracht wie unsere Vorfahren.‹31 tDamit gebt ihr also zu, dass ihr die Nachkommen der Prophetenmörder seid.32 Ja, ihr treibt es sogar noch schlimmer als sie.

33 tIhr Schlangenbrut! Wie wollt ihr Gottes Gericht und der Hölle entrinnen?34 Ich werde euch Propheten, weise Männer und Lehrer schicken, die euch die Heilige Schrift erklären. Einige von ihnen werdet ihr töten und kreuzigen. Andere werdet ihr in den Synagogen auspeitschen und sie von Stadt zu Stadt verfolgen.35 tDadurch seid ihr am Tod aller dieser Menschen schuldig, die nach Gottes Willen lebten; angefangen bei Abel bis zu Secharja, dem Sohn des Berechja, den ihr zwischen Tempel und Brandopferaltar ermordet habt.

36 Das sage ich euch: Das Strafgericht für all diese Schuld wird noch über diese Generation hereinbrechen.«

Warnung an Jerusalem

37 (Lukas 13, 34-35)
t»Jerusalem! O Jerusalem! Du tötest die Propheten und erschlägst die Boten, die Gott zu dir schickt. Wie oft schon wollte ich deine Bewohner um mich sammeln, so wie eine Henne ihre Küken unter ihre Flügel nimmt! Aber ihr habt es nicht gewollt!38 tUnd nun? Von eurem Tempel werden nur noch Trümmer bleiben!

39 tUnd ich sage euch: Mich werdet ihr erst dann wiedersehen, wenn ihr rufen werdet: ›Gelobt sei, der im Namen des Herrn zu uns kommt!‹«

Matthew 23

1 Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples,2 saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat:3 all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not.4 Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger.5 But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,6 and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,7 and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi.8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren.9 And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, even he who is in heaven.10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, even the Christ.11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, even while for a pretence ye make long prayers: therefore ye shall receive greater condemnation.

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor.17 Ye fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that hath sanctified the gold?18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor.19 Ye blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?20 He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.21 And he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.22 And he that sweareth by the heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone.24 Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel!

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess.26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous,30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.31 Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets.32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.33 Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell?34 Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar.36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
