Mateo 23

Jesús critica a los líderes religiosos

1  Entonces Jesús les dijo a las multitudes y a sus discípulos: 2 «Los maestros de la ley religiosa y los fariseos son los intérpretes oficiales de la ley de Moisés.t 3 Por lo tanto, practiquen y obedezcan todo lo que les digan, pero no sigan su ejemplo. Pues ellos no hacen lo que enseñan. 4 Aplastan a la gente bajo el peso de exigencias religiosas insoportables y jamás mueven un dedo para aligerar la carga.

5 »Todo lo que hacen es para aparentar. En los brazos se ponen anchas cajas de oración con versículos de la Escritura, y usan túnicas con flecos muy largos.t 6 Y les encanta sentarse a la mesa principal en los banquetes y ocupar los asientos de honor en las sinagogas. 7 Les encanta recibir saludos respetuosos cuando caminan por las plazas y que los llamen “Rabí”t.

8 »Pero ustedes, no permitan que nadie los llame “Rabí”, porque tienen un solo maestro y todos ustedes son hermanos por igual. 9 Además, aquí en la tierra, no se dirijan a nadie llamándolo “Padre”, porque sólo Dios, que está en el cielo, es su Padre espiritual. 10 Y no permitan que nadie los llame “Maestro”, porque ustedes tienen un solo Maestro, el Mesías. 11 El más importante entre ustedes debe ser el sirviente de los demás; 12 pero aquellos que se exaltan a sí mismos serán humillados, y los que se humillan a sí mismos serán exaltados.

13 »¡Qué aflicción les espera, maestros de la ley religiosa y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Pues le cierran la puerta del reino del cielo en la cara a la gente. Ustedes no entrarán ni tampoco dejan que los demás entren.t

15 »¡Qué aflicción les espera, maestros de la ley religiosa y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Pues cruzan tierra y mar para ganar un solo seguidor, ¡y luego lo convierten en un hijo del infiernot dos veces peor que ustedes mismos!

16 »¡Guías ciegos! ¡Qué aflicción les espera! Pues dicen que no significa nada jurar “por el templo de Dios” pero que el que jura “por el oro del templo” está obligado a cumplir ese juramento. 17 ¡Ciegos tontos! ¿Qué es más importante, el oro o el templo que lo hace sagrado? 18 Y dicen que jurar “por el altar” no impone una obligación, pero jurar “por las ofrendas que están sobre el altar” sí la impone. 19 ¡Qué ciegos son! Pues, ¿qué es más importante, la ofrenda sobre el altar o el altar que hace que la ofrenda sea sagrada? 20 Cuando juran “por el altar”, juran por el altar y por todo lo que hay encima. 21 Cuando juran “por el templo”, no sólo juran por el templo sino por Dios, quien vive allí. 22 Y cuando juran “por el cielo”, juran por el trono y por Dios, quien se sienta en el trono.

23 »¡Qué aflicción les espera, maestros de la ley religiosa y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Pues se cuidan de dar el diezmo sobre el más mínimo ingreso de sus jardines de hierbas,t pero pasan por alto los aspectos más importantes de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fe. Es cierto que deben diezmar, pero sin descuidar las cosas más importantes. 24 ¡Guías ciegos! ¡Cuelan el agua para no tragarse por accidente un mosquito, pero se tragan un camello!t

25 »¡Qué aflicción les espera, maestros de la ley religiosa y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! ¡Pues se cuidan de limpiar la parte exterior de la taza y del plato pero ustedes están sucios por dentro, llenos de avaricia y se permiten todo tipo de excesos! 26 ¡Fariseo ciego! Primero lava el interior de la taza y del plato,t y entonces el exterior también quedará limpio.

27 »¡Qué aflicción les espera, maestros de la ley religiosa y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Pues son como tumbas blanqueadas: hermosas por fuera, pero llenas de huesos de muertos y de toda clase de impurezas por dentro. 28 Por fuera parecen personas rectas, pero por dentro, el corazón está lleno de hipocresía y desenfreno.

29 »¡Qué aflicción les espera, maestros de la ley religiosa y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Edifican tumbas a los profetas que sus antepasados mataron, y adornan los monumentos de la gente justa que sus antepasados destruyeron. 30 Luego dicen: “Si hubiéramos vivido en los días de nuestros antepasados, jamás nos habríamos unido a ellos para matar a los profetas”.

31 »Así que al decir eso, dan testimonio en contra de ustedes mismos, que en verdad son descendientes de aquellos que asesinaron a los profetas. 32 Sigan adelante y terminen lo que sus antepasados comenzaron. 33 ¡Serpientes! ¡Hijos de víboras! ¿Cómo escaparán del juicio del infierno?

34 »Por lo tanto, les envío profetas, hombres sabios y maestros de la ley religiosa. A algunos los matarán crucificándolos, y a otros los azotarán con látigos en las sinagogas y los perseguirán de ciudad en ciudad. 35 Como consecuencia, se les hará responsables del asesinato de toda la gente justa de todos los tiempos, desde el asesinato del justo Abel hasta el de Zacarías, hijo de Berequías, a quien mataron en el templo, entre el santuario y el altar. 36 Les digo la verdad, ese juicio caerá sobre esta misma generación.

37 »¡Oh, Jerusalén, Jerusalén, la ciudad que mata a los profetas y apedrea a los mensajeros de Dios! Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos como la gallina protege a sus pollitos debajo de sus alas, pero no me dejaste. 38 Y ahora, mira, tu casa está abandonada y desolada.t 39 Pues te digo lo siguiente: no volverás a verme hasta que digas: “¡Bendiciones al que viene en el nombre del SEÑOR!”»t.

MATTHEW 23

Jesus Condemns the Pharisees //and the Teachers of //the Law of Moses

(Mark 12.38-40; Luke 11.37-52; 20.45-47)

1 Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
2 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses.

3 So obey everything they teach you, but don't do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else.
4 They pile heavy burdens on people's shoulders and won't lift a finger to help. 5 t Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tasselst for everyone to see. 6 They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues.

7 And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers.
8 But none of you should be called a teacher. You have only one teacher, and all of you are like brothers and sisters. 9 Don't call anyone on earth your father. All of you have the same Father in heaven. 10 None of you should be called the leader. The Messiah is your only leader. 11 t Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others.

12 t If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.

13-14 You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You won't go in yourselves, and you keep others from going in.t

15 You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You travel over land and sea to win one follower. And when you have done so, you make that person twice as fit for hell as you are.
16 You are in for trouble! You are supposed to lead others, but you are blind. You teach that it doesn't matter if a person swears by the temple. But you say it does matter if someone swears by the gold in the temple.

17 You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
18 You also teach that it doesn't matter if a person swears by the altar. But you say it does matter if someone swears by the gift on the altar. 19 Are you blind? Which is more important, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Anyone who swears by the altar also swears by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple also swears by God, who lives there.

22 t To swear by heaven is the same as swearing by God's throne and by the one who sits on that throne.
23  t You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your garden, such as mint, dill, and cumin. Yet you neglect the more important matters of the Law, such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These are the important things you should have done, though you should not have left the others undone either.

24 You blind leaders! You strain out a small fly but swallow a camel.
25 You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You wash the outside of your cups and dishes, while inside there is nothing but greed and selfishness.

26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of a cup, and then the outside will also be clean.
27  t You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You're like tombs that have been whitewashed.t On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth.

28 That's what you are like. Outside you look good, but inside you are evil and only pretend to be good.
29 You Pharisees and teachers are nothing but show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You build monuments for the prophets and decorate the tombs of good people. 30 And you claim you would not have taken part with your ancestors in killing the prophets. 31 But you prove you really are the relatives of the ones who killed the prophets. 32 So keep on doing everything they did.

33 t You are nothing but snakes and the children of snakes! How can you escape going to hell?
34 I will send to you prophets and wise people and experts in the Law of Moses. You will kill them or nail them to a cross or beat them in your synagogues or chase them from town to town. 35 t That's why you will be held guilty for the murder of every good person, beginning with the good man Abel. This also includes Barachiah's son Zechariah, t the man you murdered between the temple and the altar.

36 I can promise that you people living today will be punished for all these things!

39 t You won't see me again until you say,
“Blessed is the one who comes
in the name of the Lord.”
