마태복음서 23

율법학자와 바리새파 사람을 꾸짖으시다

(막 12:38-40; 눅 11:37-52; 20:45-47)

1 그 때에 예수께서 무리와 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. 2 “율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들은 모세의 자리에 앉은 사람들이다. 3 그러므로 그들이 너희에게 말하는 것은 무엇이든지 다 행하고 지켜라. 그러나 그들의 행실은 따르지 말아라. 그들은 말만 하고, 행하지는 않는다. 4 그들은 지기 힘든 무거운 짐을 묶어서 남의 어깨에 지우지만, 자기들은 그 짐을 나르는 데에 손가락 하나도 까딱하려고 하지 않는다. 5 그들이 하는 모든 일은 사람들에게 보이려고 하는 것이다. 그들은 t경문 곽을 크게 만들어서 차고 다니고, 옷술을 길게 늘어뜨린다. 6 그리고 잔치에서는 윗자리에, 회당에서는 높은 자리에 앉기를 좋아하며, 7 장터에서 인사 받기와, 사람들에게 t랍비라고 불리기를 좋아한다. 8 그러나 너희는 t랍비라는 호칭을 듣지 말아라. 너희의 선생은 한 분뿐이요, 너희는 모두 t형제자매들이다. 9 또 너희는 땅에서 아무도 너희의 아버지라고 부르지 말아라. 너희의 아버지는 하늘에 계신 분, 한 분뿐이시다. 10 또 너희는 지도자라는 호칭을 듣지 말아라. 너희의 지도자는 t그리스도 한 분뿐이시다. 11 너희 가운데서 으뜸가는 사람은 너희를 섬기는 사람이 되어야 한다. 12 자기를 높이는 사람은 낮아지고, 자기를 낮추는 사람은 높아질 것이다.” 13 “율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들아! 위선자들아! 너희에게 화가 있다. 너희는 사람들이 들어오지 못하도록 하늘 나라의 문을 닫기 때문이다. 너희는 자기도 들어가지 않고, 들어가려고 하는 사람도 들어가지 못하게 하고 있다. t(14절 없음) 15 율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들아! 위선자들아! 너희에게 화가 있다! 너희는 개종자 한 사람을 만들려고 바다와 육지를 두루 다니다가, 하나가 생기면, 그를 너희보다 배나 더 못된 t지옥의 자식으로 만들어 버리기 때문이다.” 16 “눈 먼 인도자들아! 너희에게 화가 있다! 너희는 말하기를 ‘누구든지 성전을 두고 맹세하면 아무래도 좋으나, 누구든지 성전의 금을 두고 맹세하면 지켜야 한다’고 한다. 17 어리석고 눈 먼 자들아! 어느 것이 더 중하냐? 금이냐? 그 금을 거룩하게 하는 성전이냐? 18 또 너희는 말하기를 ‘누구든지 제단을 두고 맹세하면 아무래도 좋으나, 누구든지 그 제단 위에 놓여 있는 제물을 두고 맹세하면 지켜야 한다’고 한다. 19 눈 먼 자들아! 어느 것이 더 중하냐? 제물이냐? 그 제물을 거룩하게 하는 제단이냐? 20 제단을 두고 맹세하는 사람은, 제단과 그 위에 있는 모든 것을 두고 맹세하는 것이요, 21 성전을 두고 맹세하는 사람은, 성전과 그 안에 계신 분을 두고 맹세하는 것이다. 22 또 하늘을 두고 맹세하는 사람은, 하나님의 보좌와 그 보좌에 앉아 계신 분을 두고 맹세하는 것이다.” 23 “율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들아! 위선자들아! 너희에게 화가 있다! 너희는 박하와 회향과 근채의 십일조는 드리면서, 정의와 자비와 신의와 같은 율법의 더 중요한 요소들은 버렸다. 그것들도 소홀히 하지 않아야 했지만, 이것들도 마땅히 행해야 했다. 24 눈 먼 인도자들아! 너희는 하루살이는 걸러내면서, 낙타는 삼키는구나!” 25 “율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들아! 위선자들아! 너희에게 화가 있다. 너희는 잔과 접시의 겉은 깨끗이 하지만, 그 안은 탐욕과 방종으로 가득 채우기 때문이다. 26 눈 먼 바리새파 사람들아! 먼저 잔 안을 깨끗이 하여라. 그리하면 그 겉도 깨끗하게 될 것이다.” 27 “율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들아! 위선자들아! 너희에게 화가 있다. 너희는 회칠한 무덤과 같기 때문이다. 그것은 겉으로는 아름답게 보이지만, 그 안에는 죽은 사람의 뼈와 온갖 더러운 것이 가득하다. 28 이와 같이, 너희도 겉으로는 사람에게 의롭게 보이지만, 속에는 위선과 불법이 가득하다.” 29 “율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들아! 위선자들아! 너희에게 화가 있다. 너희는 예언자들의 무덤을 만들고, 의인들의 기념비를 꾸민다. 30 그러면서, ‘우리가 조상의 시대에 살았더라면, 예언자들을 피 흘리게 하는 일에 가담하지 않았을 것이다’ 하고 말하기 때문이다. 31 이렇게 하여, 너희는 예언자들을 죽인 자들의 자손임을 스스로 증언한다. 32 그러므로 너희는 너희 조상의 분량을 마저 채워라. 33 뱀들아! 독사의 새끼들아! 너희가 어떻게 지옥의 심판을 피하겠느냐? 34 그러므로 내가 예언자들과 지혜 있는 자들과 율법학자들을 너희에게 보낸다. 너희는 그 가운데서 더러는 죽이고, 더러는 십자가에 못박고, 더러는 회당에서 채찍질하고, 이 동네 저 동네로 뒤쫓으며 박해할 것이다. 35 그리하여 의인 아벨의 피로부터, 너희가 성소와 제단 사이에서 살해한 바라갸의 아들 사가랴의 피에 이르기까지, 땅에 죄 없이 흘린 모든 피가 너희에게 돌아갈 것이다. 36 내가 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 이 일의 책임은 다 이 세대에게 돌아갈 것이다.”

예루살렘을 보시고 한탄하시다

(눅 13:34-35)

37 “예루살렘아, 예루살렘아, 네게 보낸 예언자들을 죽이고, 돌로 치는구나! 암탉이 병아리를 날개 아래 품듯이, 내가 몇 번이나 네 자녀들을 모아 품으려 하였더냐! 그러나 너희는 원하지 않았다. 38 보아라, 너희 집은 버림을 받아서, 황폐하게 될 것이다. 39 내가 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 t‘주님의 이름으로 오시는 분은 복되시다!’ 하고 말할 그 때까지, 너희는 나를 다시는 보지 못할 것이다.”

Jesus Condemns the Pharisees //and the Teachers of //the Law of Moses

(Mark 12.38-40; Luke 11.37-52; 20.45-47)

1 Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:
2 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses.

3 So obey everything they teach you, but don't do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else.
4 They pile heavy burdens on people's shoulders and won't lift a finger to help. 5 t Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tasselst for everyone to see. 6 They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues.

7 And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers.
8 But none of you should be called a teacher. You have only one teacher, and all of you are like brothers and sisters. 9 Don't call anyone on earth your father. All of you have the same Father in heaven. 10 None of you should be called the leader. The Messiah is your only leader. 11 t Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others.

12 t If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.

13-14 You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You won't go in yourselves, and you keep others from going in.t

15 You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You travel over land and sea to win one follower. And when you have done so, you make that person twice as fit for hell as you are.
16 You are in for trouble! You are supposed to lead others, but you are blind. You teach that it doesn't matter if a person swears by the temple. But you say it does matter if someone swears by the gold in the temple.

17 You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
18 You also teach that it doesn't matter if a person swears by the altar. But you say it does matter if someone swears by the gift on the altar. 19 Are you blind? Which is more important, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 Anyone who swears by the altar also swears by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple also swears by God, who lives there.

22 t To swear by heaven is the same as swearing by God's throne and by the one who sits on that throne.
23  t You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your garden, such as mint, dill, and cumin. Yet you neglect the more important matters of the Law, such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These are the important things you should have done, though you should not have left the others undone either.

24 You blind leaders! You strain out a small fly but swallow a camel.
25 You Pharisees and teachers are show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You wash the outside of your cups and dishes, while inside there is nothing but greed and selfishness.

26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of a cup, and then the outside will also be clean.
27  t You Pharisees and teachers are in for trouble! You're nothing but show-offs. You're like tombs that have been whitewashed.t On the outside they are beautiful, but inside they are full of bones and filth.

28 That's what you are like. Outside you look good, but inside you are evil and only pretend to be good.
29 You Pharisees and teachers are nothing but show-offs, and you're in for trouble! You build monuments for the prophets and decorate the tombs of good people. 30 And you claim you would not have taken part with your ancestors in killing the prophets. 31 But you prove you really are the relatives of the ones who killed the prophets. 32 So keep on doing everything they did.

33 t You are nothing but snakes and the children of snakes! How can you escape going to hell?
34 I will send to you prophets and wise people and experts in the Law of Moses. You will kill them or nail them to a cross or beat them in your synagogues or chase them from town to town. 35 t That's why you will be held guilty for the murder of every good person, beginning with the good man Abel. This also includes Barachiah's son Zechariah, t the man you murdered between the temple and the altar.

36 I can promise that you people living today will be punished for all these things!

Jesus Loves Jerusalem

(Luke 13.34,35)

37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Your people have killed the prophets and have stoned the messengers who were sent to you. I have often wanted to gather your people, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. But you wouldn't let me. 38 t And now your temple will be deserted.

39 t You won't see me again until you say,
“Blessed is the one who comes
in the name of the Lord.”
