Matei 23

1 Atunci Isus, pe când cuvânta gloatelor și ucenicilor Săi,2 a zis: „Cărturarii și fariseii șed pe scaunul lui Moise.3 Deci toate lucrurile pe care vă spun ei să le păziți, păziți-le și faceți-le; dar după faptele lor să nu faceți. Căci ei zic, dar nu fac.4 Ei leagă sarcini grele și cu anevoie de purtat și le pun pe umerii oamenilor, dar ei nici cu degetul nu vor să le miște.5 Toate faptele lor le fac pentru ca să fie văzuți de oameni. Astfel, își fac filacteriile late, își fac poalele veșmintelor cu ciucuri lungi;6 umblă după locurile dintâi la ospețe și după scaunele dintâi în sinagogi;7 le place să le facă oamenii plecăciuni prin piețe și să le zică: „Rabi! Rabi!”8 Voi să nu vă numiți Rabi! Fiindcă Unul singur este Învățătorul vostru: Hristos, și voi toți sunteți frați.9 Și „Tată” să nu numiți pe nimeni pe pământ; pentru că Unul singur este Tatăl vostru: Acela care este în ceruri.10 Să nu vă numiți „Dascăli”; căci Unul singur este Dascălul vostru: Hristosul.11 Cel mai mare dintre voi să fie slujitorul vostru.12 Oricine se va înălța va fi smerit; și oricine se va smeri va fi înălțat.13 Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici! Pentru că voi închideți oamenilor Împărăția cerurilor: nici voi nu intrați în ea, și nici pe cei ce vor să intre nu-i lăsați să intre.14 Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici! Pentru că voi mâncați casele văduvelor, în timp ce, de ochii lumii, faceți rugăciuni lungi; de aceea veți lua o mai mare osândă.15 Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici! Pentru că voi înconjurați marea și pământul ca să faceți un tovarăș de credință; și, după ce a ajuns tovarăș de credință, faceți din el un fiu al gheenei, de două ori mai rău decât sunteți voi înșivă.16 Vai de voi, povățuitori orbi, care ziceți: „Dacă jură cineva pe Templu, nu este nimic; dar dacă jură pe aurul Templului, este legat de jurământul lui.”17 Nebuni și orbi! Care este mai mare: aurul sau Templul, care sfințește aurul?18 „Dacă jură cineva pe altar, nu este nimic, dar dacă jură pe darul de pe altar, este legat de jurământul lui.”19 Nebuni și orbi! Care este mai mare: darul sau altarul, care sfințește darul?20 Deci cine jură pe altar jură pe el și pe tot ce este deasupra lui;21 cine jură pe Templu jură pe el și pe Cel ce locuiește în el;22 și cine jură pe cer jură pe scaunul de domnie al lui Dumnezeu și pe Cel ce șade pe el.23 Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici! Pentru că voi dați zeciuială din izmă, din mărar și din chimen și lăsați nefăcute cele mai însemnate lucruri din Lege: dreptatea, mila și credincioșia; pe acestea trebuia să le faceți, și pe acelea să nu le lăsați nefăcute.24 Povățuitori orbi, care strecurați țânțarul și înghițiți cămila!25 Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici! Pentru că voi curățați partea de afară a paharului și a blidului, dar înăuntru sunt pline de răpire și de necumpătare.26 Fariseu orb! Curăță întâi partea dinăuntru a paharului și a blidului, pentru ca și partea de afară să fie curată.27 Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici! Pentru că voi sunteți ca mormintele văruite, care pe din afară se arată frumoase, iar pe dinăuntru sunt pline de oasele morților și de orice fel de necurățenie.28 Tot așa și voi, pe din afară vă arătați neprihăniți oamenilor, dar pe dinăuntru sunteți plini de fățărnicie și de fărădelege.29 Vai de voi, cărturari și farisei fățarnici! Pentru că voi zidiți mormintele prorocilor, împodobiți gropile celor neprihăniți30 și ziceți: „Dacă am fi trăit noi în zilele părinților noștri, nu ne-am fi unit cu ei la vărsarea sângelui prorocilor.”31 Prin aceasta mărturisiți despre voi înșivă că sunteți fiii celor ce au omorât pe proroci.32 Voi, dar, umpleți măsura părinților voștri!33 Șerpi, pui de năpârci! Cum veți scăpa de pedeapsa gheenei?34 De aceea, iată, vă trimit proroci, înțelepți și cărturari. Pe unii din ei îi veți omorî și răstigni, pe alții îi veți bate în sinagogile voastre și-i veți prigoni din cetate în cetate;35 ca să vină asupra voastră tot sângele nevinovat care a fost vărsat pe pământ, de la sângele neprihănitului Abel până la sângele lui Zaharia, fiul lui Barachia, pe care l-ați omorât între Templu și altar.36 Adevărat vă spun că toate acestea vor veni peste neamul acesta.37 Ierusalime, Ierusalime, care omori pe proroci și ucizi cu pietre pe cei trimiși la tine! De câte ori am vrut să strâng pe copiii tăi cum își strânge găina puii sub aripi, și n-ați vrut!38 Iată că vi se lasă casa pustie;39 căci vă spun că de acum încolo nu Mă veți mai vedea până când veți zice: „Binecuvântat este Cel ce vine în Numele Domnului!”

Matthew 23

Pharisaism Exposed

1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,2 saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses;3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.5 But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their tphylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.6 They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.8 But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.10 Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.11 But the greatest among you shall be your servant.12 Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Eight Woes

13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.14 [tWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.]

15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.'17 You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?18 And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.'19 You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering?20 Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it.21 And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it.22 And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.26 You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.28 So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,30 and say, 'If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'31 So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.32 Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers.33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?

34 "Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.38 Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, 'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!'"
