Jesús critica a los líderes religiosos

1 Después Jesús les dijo a sus seguidores:2 «Los maestros de la ley y los fariseost tienen la autoridad de explicar la ley de Moisést.3 Así que hagan caso de todo lo que ellos les dicen, pero no sigan su ejemplo porque ellos no hacen lo que ellos mismos dicen.

4 Ellos cargan a la gente con reglas estrictas y difíciles de cumplir. Los obligan a cumplirlas, pero ellos ni siquiera quieren mover un dedo para obedecerlas.
5 »Ellos hacen cosas buenas sólo para figurar como más importantes que los demás. Llevan en la frente cajitast de cuero con porciones de las Escriturast. Hacen esas cajitas cada vez más grandes y agrandan también los flecost de sus mantos.6 Les gustan los lugares más importantes en las fiestas y buscan los lugares de honor en las sinagogast.

7 También les gusta que la gente los salude con respeto en las plazas y que los llamen "maestro"t.
8 »Pero ustedes no dejen que nadie los llame "maestro". Ustedes solamente tienen un Maestro y todos ustedes son iguales como hermanos y hermanas.9 Aquí en la tierra no le digan a nadie "padre". Ustedes sólo tienen un Padre que está en el cielo.10 Tampoco dejen que les llamen "líder" pues ustedes solamente tienen un Líder, quien es el Cristot.11 El más importante entre ustedes será el que les sirva,

12 porque el que se crea más que los demás será humillado, y el que se humille será hecho importante.
13 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes le cierran las puertas del reino de Diost a la gente; ni entran ustedes ni dejan entrar a los que tratan de hacerlo.

15 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes viajan por tierra y mar para convertir a alguno en fariseo. Cuando lo logran, lo vuelven peor que ustedes y más merecedor de ir al infierno que ustedes mismos.
16 »¡Pobres de ustedes! ¡Guías ciegos! Ustedes dicen: "Si alguien jura por el templot no está obligado a mantener su juramento; pero si alguien jura por el oro que hay en el templo, entonces está obligado a cumplir el juramento".

17 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante? ¿El oro del templo o el templo que hace sagrado ese oro?
18 »Ustedes también dicen: "Si alguien jura por el altart, no tiene que cumplir su juramento; pero si jura por la ofrenda que está en el altar entonces tiene que cumplirlo".19 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante? ¿La ofrenda que hay en el altar o el altar que hace que la ofrenda quede consagrada?20 De esta forma, si alguien jura por el altar, está jurando por él y por todo lo que hay en él.21 Si alguien jura por el templo, está jurando por él y por todo lo que hay adentro.

22 Y si alguien jura por el cielo, está jurando por el trono de Dios y por Dios mismo que está sentado en él.
23 »¡Pobres de ustedes maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes dan a Dios la décima parte de todo lo que cosechan, incluso de la menta, del anís y del comino.t Pero se olvidan de las enseñanzas más importantes de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad a Dios. Eso es lo que deberían hacer sin dejar de hacer lo otro.

24 ¡Ustedes son guías ciegos! Son como el que saca un mosquito de su bebida y luego se traga un camello.
25 »¡Pobres de ustedes maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes son como los vasos y los tazones que se lavan sólo por fuera. Por dentro, siguen llenos de codicia y egoísmo.

26 Fariseos ciegos, limpien el vaso primero por dentro para que quede limpio por dentro y por fuera.
27 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos! ¡Hipócritas! Ustedes son como los sepulcros pintados de blanco. Se ven muy bonitos por fuera, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y toda clase de suciedad.

28 Lo mismo pasa con ustedes, parecen buenos pero por dentro están llenos de hipocresía y de maldad.
29 »¡Pobres de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas! Porque edifican los sepulcros de los profetas y adornan los monumentos de los justos.30 Ustedes dicen: "Si hubiéramos vivido en el tiempo de nuestros antepasados, no hubiéramos sido sus cómplices en el asesinato de los profetas".31 Por lo tanto, están reconociendo que ustedes son descendientes de los que mataron a los profetas.

32 ¡Entonces sigan y terminen lo que sus padres empezaron!
33 »¡Serpientes! ¡Partidat de víboras! ¿Cómo creen que se van a salvar de ser echados al infierno?34 Por eso les digo esto: les enviaré profetas, hombres sabios y maestros. Ustedes matarán a unos de ellos y a otros los colgarán en la cruz para matarlos. A otros los golpearán en sus sinagogas y los perseguirán de pueblo en pueblo.35 Como resultado, ustedes pagarán por la muerte de todos los justos del mundo que han sido asesinados desde el asesinato de Abel, quien hacía la voluntad de Dios, hasta el asesinato de Zacarías,t hijo de Berequías. A Zacarías ustedes lo asesinaron entre el santuario del templo y el altar.

36 Les digo la verdad: Esta generación será castigada por todo esto.

Jesús advierte al pueblo de Jerusalén

37 »¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, la que mata a los profetas y apedrea a los mensajeros que Dios le envía! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos, así como la gallina junta a sus pollitos bajo sus alas, pero ustedes no quisieron!38 Ahora su casa quedará completamente vacía

39 y les digo: no me verán más sino hasta que digan ustedes: "¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!"t»

Pharisaism Exposed

1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,2 saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses;3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.5 But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their tphylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.6 They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.8 But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.10 Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.11 But the greatest among you shall be your servant.12 Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Eight Woes

13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.14 [tWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.]

15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.'17 You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?18 And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.'19 You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering?20 Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it.21 And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it.22 And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.24 You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.26 You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.

27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.28 So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,30 and say, 'If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'31 So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.32 Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers.33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?

34 "Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

Lament over Jerusalem

37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.38 Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!39 For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, 'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!'"
