Matteus 5
Jesus leer vir die mense op die berg
1 Toe Jesus die baie mense sien, het Hy teen die berg opgegaan en gaan sit. Sy tdissipels het na Hom toe gekom.
2 Toe het Hy begin om vir hulle te leer. Hy het vir hulle gesê:Die gelukkige mense

3 “Mense wat weet hulle het
vir God nodig,
is gelukkige mense,
want God wat in die hemel is,
is hulle Koning.
4 Mense wat nou hartseer is,
is gelukkige mense,
want God sal hulle hartseer
wegneem.
5 Mense wat tnederig is
en wat op God tvertrou,
nie op hulleself nie,
is gelukkige mense,
want God sal vir hulle
die aarde gee.
6 Mense wat baie graag wil doen
wat God wil hê,
is gelukkige mense,
want God sal vir hulle help
om alles te doen wat Hy wil hê.
7 Mense wat goed is vir iemand
wat swaarkry,
is gelukkige mense.
God sal vir hulle ook goed wees.
8 Mense wat net vir God dien,
is gelukkige mense,
want hulle sal God sien.
9 Mense wat vrede maak
tussen mense,
is gelukkige mense.
God sal sê hulle is sy kinders.
10 Wanneer mense doen
wat God wil hê,
en ander mense doen
slegte dinge aan hulle,
dan is hulle gelukkige mense.
God wat in die hemel is,
is hulle Koning.
11 “Julle is gelukkige mense wanneer ander mense julle tbeledig en slegte dinge doen aan julle omdat julle My dien. Julle is gelukkige mense wanneer hulle slegte stories oor julle vertel wat alles leuens is.
12 Wanneer mense slegte dinge doen aan julle, dan moet julle baie bly wees, want in die hemel sal God vir julle baie goed wees. Die mense het ook slegte dinge gedoen aan die tprofete wat voor julle gelewe het.”Die sout vir die aarde en die lig van die wêreld

13 “Julle is vir die aarde soos sout in kos. Maar as sout nie meer soos sout smaak nie, dan kan niemand dit weer soos sout laat smaak nie. Daardie sout beteken niks. Mense gooi dit buite weg en hulle trap daarop.
14 “Julle is vir die wêreld soos lig wat skyn. As ’n stad bo-op ’n berg lê, dan kan al die mense die stad sien. 15 So steek ’n mens ook nie ’n tlamp op en maak dit dan toe met ’n emmer nie. Nee, ’n mens sit ’n lamp op die lampstaander, en die lig skyn sodat almal in die huis kan sien.
16 So moet die mense ook julle lig kan sien. Hulle moet sien julle lewe reg. Dan sal hulle ook julle Vader prys wat in die hemel is.”Jesus sê die wette is belangrik
17 “Moenie dink Ek het gekom om te sê die tWette van Moses en die boeke van die tprofete is nie meer belangrik nie. Ek het nie gekom om te sê dit is nie belangrik nie, Ek het gekom om te wys wat Moses en die profete bedoel het. 18 Ek sê vir julle, en dit is seker: Die hemel en die aarde sal verdwyn, maar niks in die Wette van Moses sal verdwyn nie, nie die kleinste letter of tletter-strepie nie. Alles wat daar geskryf is, moet eers gebeur. 19 Iemand dink miskien dit is nie nodig om gehoorsaam te wees aan een van die onbelangrikste van hierdie wette nie, en hy leer vir ander mense ook so. Dan sal hy niks beteken nie by God, die Koning wat in die hemel is. Maar iemand wat gehoorsaam is aan die wette van God en wat vir ander mense ook so leer, sal belangrik wees by God, die Koning wat in die hemel is.
20 Ek sê vir julle, en dit is seker: Julle moet gehoorsaam wees en doen wat God wil hê, meer gehoorsaam as die tskrifgeleerdes en die tFariseërs. As julle dit nie doen nie, dan sal julle nie by God kan kom nie, by God, die Koning wat in die hemel is.”Die wette is belangrik: Mense moet vrede maak

21 “Julle weet die wette sê: ‘tJy mag nie iemand vermoor nie. As jy iemand vermoor, dan sal die hof jou straf.’ 22 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Elkeen wat vir sy broer kwaad word, moet dit weet: Die hof sal hom straf. En elkeen wat vir sy broer sê: Jy is ’n domkop, die tJoodse Raad sal hom straf. En elkeen wat vir iemand sê: Jy is ’n tdwaas, hy sal brand in die vuur van die hel. 23 Wanneer jy jou toffer na die taltaar bring, en jy onthou daar dat jou broer kwaad is vir jou, 24 moenie dan offer nie. Los jou offer daar by die altaar en gaan maak eers vrede met jou broer. Kom dan terug en bring jou offer vir God. 25 Wanneer iemand jou hof toe wil vat, dan moet jy met hom vrede maak voordat julle by die hof kom. As jy dit nie doen nie, dan sal hy jou na die hof bring, en die tregter sal sê die polisie moet jou in die tronk toesluit.
26 Ek sê vir jou, en dit is seker: Jy sal nie uit die tronk uitkom nie. Jy sal eers alles moet betaal wat jy skuld.”Die wette is belangrik: Egbreuk

27 “Julle weet die wette sê: ‘tJy mag nie tegbreuk pleeg nie.’ 28 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Elkeen wat na ’n ander vrou kyk en lus kry om by haar te slaap, het klaar in sy hart sonde gedoen en egbreuk gepleeg. 29 As jou regter-oog jou laat sonde doen, ruk dit uit en gooi dit weg, want dan verloor jy net ’n oog en jou hele liggaam gaan nie hel toe nie.
30 As jou regter-hand jou laat sonde doen, kap dit af en gooi dit weg, want dan verloor jy net ’n hand en dan sal jou hele liggaam nie hel toe gaan nie.”Die wette is belangrik: Getroude mense wat skei

31 “Julle weet die wette sê: ‘tElkeen wat van sy vrou skei, moet vir haar ’n tskeibrief gee.’
32 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Wanneer iemand van sy vrou skei, en die vrou trou weer, dan pleeg sy tegbreuk, en dan is dit die man se skuld. En elke man wat met ’n geskeide vrou trou, pleeg egbreuk. ’n Man mag net van sy vrou skei as sy seks gehad het met ’n ander man.”Die wette is belangrik: Mense moenie iets belowe nie
33 “Julle weet ook die wette sê: ‘tJy moenie iets belowe wat jy nie wil doen nie,’ en ‘as jy vir die Here iets belowe het, dan moet jy dit doen.’ 34 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Jy moet nooit iets belowe en sê die Here is die tgetuie nie. Julle moenie iets belowe en sê die hemel is die getuie nie, want die hemel is die ttroon van God. 35 Julle moenie iets belowe en sê die aarde is die getuie nie, want die aarde is die plek waar God se voete rus. Julle moenie iets belowe en sê Jerusalem is die getuie nie, want Jerusalem is die stad van God, die Groot Koning.
36 Jy moenie iets belowe en sê jy is self die getuie nie, want jy kan nie self een haar op jou kop wit of swart maak nie, jy kan nie die kleur verander nie.
37 “Sê ‘ja’ wanneer julle ‘ja’ wil sê, en sê ‘nee’ wanneer julle ‘nee’ wil sê. Dit is tdie duiwel wat vir julle meer as dit laat sê.”Die wette is belangrik: Mense moenie keer wanneer ander mense slegte dinge doen aan hulle nie

38 “Julle weet die wette sê: ‘tAs jy iemand se oog uitslaan, dan moet hy jou oog ook uitslaan. As jy iemand se tand uitslaan, dan moet hy jou tand ook uitslaan.’ 39 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Moenie keer wanneer iemand slegte dinge doen aan jou nie. As hy jou op jou regter-wang klap, draai dan die ander wang na hom toe, sodat hy jou daar ook kan klap. 40 As hy jou hof toe wil vat omdat hy jou tonderkleed wil hê, gee dan ook jou tbo-kleed vir hom. 41 As ’n soldaat sê jy moet sy goed een tmyl ver dra, dan moet jy dit twee myl ver dra.
42 As iemand iets vir jou vra, gee dit vir hom. As iemand iets by jou wil leen, moenie vir hom ‘nee’ sê nie.”Die wette is belangrik: Liefde vir ’n mens se vyand

43 “Julle weet die wette sê: ‘tJy moet lief wees vir jou tnaaste en jy moet jou vyand haat.’ 44 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Julle moet lief wees vir julle vyande en julle moet bid vir die mense wat slegte dinge doen aan julle. 45 Dan sal die mense weet julle is kinders van julle Vader in die hemel. Want julle Vader laat die son skyn oor slegte en oor goeie mense en Hy laat die reën val op mense wat goed doen en ook op mense wat verkeerd doen. 46 As julle lief is net vir mense wat ook lief is vir julle, dan sal God nie daaroor goed wees vir julle nie. Die ttollenaars doen presies dieselfde. 47 En as julle vriendelik is net met julle vriende, dan doen julle wat ander mense ook doen, julle doen niks beter as hulle nie. Die mense wat God nie ken nie, doen presies dieselfde. 48 Julle Vader in die hemel is lief vir al die mense, dit maak nie saak wie hulle is nie. So moet julle ook lief wees vir al die ander mense.”

3 “Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor;
the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!
4 Happy are those who mourn; t
God will comfort them!
5 Happy are those who are humble; t
they will receive what God has promised!
6 Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires; t
God will satisfy them fully!
7 Happy are those who are merciful to others;
God will be merciful to them!
8 Happy are the pure in heart; t
they will see God!
9 Happy are those who work for peace;
God will call them his children!
10 Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires; t
the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!
11 “Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers. t
12 Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted.tSalt and Light

13 “You are like salt for the whole human race. But if salt loses its saltiness, there is no way to make it salty again. It has become worthless, so it is thrown out and people trample on it.
14 “You are like light for the whole world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. t 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bowl; instead he puts it on the lampstand, where it gives light for everyone in the house.t
16 In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.tTeaching about the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets. I have not come to do away with them, but to make their teachings come true. 18 Remember that as long as heaven and earth last, not the least point nor the smallest detail of the Law will be done away with — not until the end of all things. t t 19 So then, whoever disobeys even the least important of the commandments and teaches others to do the same, will be least in the Kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys the Law and teaches others to do the same, will be great in the Kingdom of heaven.
20 I tell you, then, that you will be able to enter the Kingdom of heaven only if you are more faithful than the teachers of the Law and the Pharisees in doing what God requires. Teaching about Anger

21 “You have heard that people were told in the past, ‘Do not commit murder; anyone who does will be brought to trial.’ t 22 But now I tell you: whoever is angryt with his brother will be brought to trial, whoever calls his brother ‘You good-for-nothing!’ will be brought before the Council, and whoever calls his brother a worthless fool will be in danger of going to the fire of hell. 23 So if you are about to offer your gift to God at the altar and there you remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your gift there in front of the altar, go at once and make peace with your brother, and then come back and offer your gift to God.
25 “If someone brings a lawsuit against you and takes you to court, settle the dispute with him while there is time, before you get to court. Once you are there, he will hand you over to the judge, who will hand you over to the police, and you will be put in jail.
26 There you will stay, I tell you, until you pay the last penny of your fine. Teaching about Adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ t 28 But now I tell you: anyone who looks at a woman and wants to possess her is guilty of committing adultery with her in his heart. 29 So if your right eye causes you to sin, take it out and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose a part of your body than to have your whole body thrown into hell.t
30 If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is much better for you to lose one of your limbs than for your whole body to go to hell.tTeaching about Divorce

31 “It was also said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.’ t
32 But now I tell you: if a man divorces his wife, for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, then he is guilty of making her commit adultery if she marries again; and the man who marries her commits adultery also.tTeaching about Vows
33 “You have also heard that people were told in the past, ‘Do not break your promise, but do what you have vowed to the Lord to do.’ t 34 But now I tell you: do not use any vow when you make a promise. Do not swear by heaven, for it is God's throne;t 35 nor by earth, for it is the resting place for his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.t 36 Do not even swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black.
37 Just say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ — anything else you say comes from the Evil One. Teaching about Revenge

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ t 39 But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too. 40 And if someone takes you to court to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well. 41 And if one of the occupation troops forces you to carry his pack one kilometre, carry it two kilometres.
42 When someone asks you for something, give it to him; when someone wants to borrow something, lend it to him. Love for Enemies
(Lk 6.27–28, 32–36)
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your friends, hate your enemies.’ t 44 But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may become the children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil. 46 Why should God reward you if you love only the people who love you? Even the tax collectors do that! 47 And if you speak only to your friends, have you done anything out of the ordinary? Even the pagans do that! 48 You must be perfect — just as your Father in heaven is perfect!t
