MATTEUS 5

Die bergrede

(Matt. 5-7)

1 Toe Jesus die menigte mense sien, het Hy teen die berg opgegaan. Nadat Hy gaan sit het, het sy dissipels na Hom toe gekom, 2 en Hy het hulle geleer en gesê:

Die werklik gelukkiges

(Luk. 6:20-23)

3 “Geseënd is dié wat weet hoe afhanklik hulle van God is, want aan hulle behoort die koninkryk van die hemel. 4 Geseënd is dié wat treur, want hulle sal vertroos word. 5 Geseënd is die sagmoediges, want hulle sal die nuwe aarde ontvang. 6 Geseënd is dié wat honger en dors na wat reg is, want hulle sal versadig word. 7 Geseënd is dié wat barmhartig is, want aan hulle sal barmhartigheid bewys word. 8 Geseënd is dié wat rein van hart is, want hulle sal God sien. 9 Geseënd is die vredemakers, want hulle sal kinders van God genoem word. 10 Geseënd is dié wat vervolg word omdat hulle doen wat reg is, want aan hulle behoort die koninkryk van die hemel. 11 “Geseënd is julle wanneer die mense julle ter wille van My beledig en vervolg en valslik al wat sleg is van julle sê. 12 Wees bly en verheug, want julle loon is groot in die hemel. Hulle het immers die profete voor julle net so vervolg.”

Die sout vir die aarde en die lig vir die wêreld

(Mark. 9:50; Luk. 14:34-35)

14 “Julle is die lig vir die wêreld. 'n Stad wat op 'n berg lê, kan nie weggesteek word nie; 15 ook steek 'n mens nie 'n lamp op en sit dit onder 'n emmer nie maar op 'n lampstaander, en dit gee lig vir almal in die huis. 16 Laat julle lig so voor die mense skyn, dat hulle julle goeie werke kan sien en julle Vader wat in die hemel is, verheerlik.”

Die vervulling van die wet

17 “Moenie dink dat Ek gekom het om die wet of die profete ongeldig te maak nie. Ek het nie gekom om hulle ongeldig te maak nie, maar om hulle hulle volle betekenis te laat kry. 18 Dit verseker Ek julle: Die hemel en die aarde sal eerder vergaan as dat een letter of letterstrepie van die wet sal wegval voordat alles voleindig is.

19 “Wie dan ook een van die geringste van hierdie gebooie ongeldig maak en die mense so leer, sal die minste geag word in die koninkryk van die hemel. Maar wie die wet gehoorsaam en ander so leer, sal hoog geag word in die koninkryk van die hemel. 20 Ek sê vir julle: As julle getrouheid aan die wet nie meer inhou as dié van die skrifgeleerdes en die Fariseërs nie, sal julle nooit in die koninkryk van die hemel ingaan nie.”

Versoening

21 “Julle het gehoor dat daar van die ou tyd af aan die mense gesê is: ‘Jy mag nie moord pleeg nie;t en elkeen wat moord pleeg, is strafbaar voor die regbank’. 22 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Elkeen wat vir sy broer kwaad is, is al strafbaar voor die regbank. Verder, elkeen wat sy broer uitskel vir 'n gek, is strafbaar voor die Joodse Raad; en wie hom uitskel vir 'n idioot, is strafbaar met die helse vuur.

23 “As jy dus jou gawe na die altaar toe bring en dit jou daar byval dat jou broer iets teen jou het, 24 laat staan jou gawe daar by die altaar en gaan maak eers vrede met jou broer en kom dan en bring jou gawe.

25 “As iemand 'n regsaak teen jou begin, kom betyds tot 'n skikking solank jy nog saam met hom op pad hof toe is, sodat hy jou nie voor die regter bring en die regter jou aan die polisie oorgee en dié jou in die tronk sit nie. 26 Dit verseker Ek jou: Jy sal sekerlik nie daar uitkom voordat jy die laaste sent betaal het nie.”

Kuisheid

27 “Julle het gehoor dat daar gesê is: ‘Jy mag nie egbreuk pleeg nie.’t 28 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Elkeen wat na 'n vrou kyk en haar begeer, het reeds in sy hart met haar egbreuk gepleeg.

29 “As jou regteroog jou laat struikel, haal hom uit en gooi hom van jou af weg; want dit is vir jou beter dat net een van jou ledemate verlore gaan as dat jou hele liggaam in die hel gegooi word. 30 Of as jou regterhand jou laat struikel, kap hom af en gooi hom van jou af weg; want dit is vir jou beter dat net een van jou ledemate verlore gaan as dat jou hele liggaam in die hel beland.”

Egskeiding

(Matt. 19:9; Mark. 10:11-12; Luk. 16:18)

31 “Daar is gesê: ‘Elkeen wat van sy vrou skei, moet aan haar 'n skeibrief gee.’t 32 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Elkeen wat van sy vrou skei behalwe oor owerspel, maak dat sy egbreuk pleeg, en iemand wat met die geskeide vrou trou, pleeg ook egbreuk.”

Die aflê van 'n eed

33 “Verder het julle gehoor dat daar van die ou tyd af aan die mense gesê is: ‘Jy mag nie jou eed verbreek nie, en 'n eed in die Naam van die Here moet jy nakom.’t 34 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Moet glad nie 'n eed aflê nie, nie by die hemel nie, want dit is die troon van God; 35 nie by die aarde nie, want dit is die rusplek vir sy voete; nie by Jerusalem nie, want dit is die stad van die groot Koning. 36 Jy moet ook nie jou kop op die spel plaas as jy 'n eed aflê nie, want jy kan nie een haar wit of swart maak nie. 37 Laat julle ‘ja’ eenvoudig ‘ja’ wees en julle ‘nee’, ‘nee’. Wat meer gesê word as dit, kom van die Bose.”

Vergelding

38 “Julle het gehoor dat daar gesê is: ‘'n Oog vir 'n oog en 'n tand vir 'n tand.’t 39 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Julle moet julle nie teen 'n kwaadwillige mens verset nie. As iemand jou op die regterwang slaan, draai ook die ander wang na hom toe. 40 As iemand jou hof toe wil vat om jou onderklere te eis, gee hom ook jou boklere. 41 As iemand jou dwing om sy goed een kilometer ver te dra, dra dit vir hom twee kilometer. 42 Gee aan hom wat iets van jou vra, en moet hom wat van jou wil leen, nie afwys nie.”

Liefde vir die vyand

(Luk. 6:27-28,32-36)

43 “Julle het gehoor dat daar gesê is: ‘Jou naaste moet jy liefhêt en jou vyand moet jy haat.’ 44 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Julle moet julle vyande liefhêt, en julle moet bid vir dié wat vir julle vervolg, 45 sodat julle kinders kan wees van julle Vader in die hemel. Hy laat immers sy son opkom oor slegtes en goeies, en Hy laat reën oor dié wat reg doen en oor dié wat verkeerd doen. 46 As julle net dié liefhet wat vir julle liefhet, watter loon kan julle dan nog verwag? Maak die tollenaars nie ook maar net so nie? 47 En as julle net julle broers groet, wat doen julle meer as ander? Maak die heidene nie ook maar net so nie?

48 “Wees julle dan volmaak soos julle hemelse Vader volmaak is.”

Matthew 5

1 AND seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set down, his disciples came unto him.2 And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4 Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.5 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.8 Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.9 Blesses are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake:12 Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.14 You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid.15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house.16 So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.17 Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.18 For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.19 He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 For I tell you, that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.21 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not kill. And whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.22 But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.23 If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath any thing against thee;24 Leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother: and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.25 Be at agreement with thy adversary betimes, whilst thou art in the way with him: lest perhaps the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.26 Amen I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing.27 You have heard that it was said to them of old: Thou shalt not commit adultery.28 But I say to you, that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, hath already committed adultery with her in his heart.29 And if thy right eye scandalize thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee. For it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than that thy whole body be cast into hell.30 And if thy right hand scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than that thy whole body be cast into hell.31 And it hath been said, Whoseoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.32 But I say to you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, excepting for the cause of fornication, maketh her to commit adultery: and he that shall marry her that is put away, committeth adultery.33 Again you have heard that it was said to them of old, Thou shalt not forswear thyself: but thou shalt perform thy oaths to the Lord.34 But I say to you not to swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God:35 Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool: nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.37 But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.38 You have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.39 But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other:40 And if a man will contend with thee in judgment, and take away thy coat, let go thy cloak also unto him.41 And whosoever will force thee one mile, go with him other two,42 Give to him that asketh of thee and from him that would borrow of thee turn not away.43 You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thy enemy.44 But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:45 That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise upon the good, and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust.46 For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? do not even the publicans this?47 And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? do not also the heathens this?48 Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect.
