Mateo 5

El sermón del monte

1 Viendo la multitud, subió al monte y se sentó. Se le acercaron sus discípulos,

2 y él, abriendo su boca, les enseñaba diciendo:

Las bienaventuranzas

3 «Bienaventurados los pobres en espíritu,
porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.

4 Bienaventurados los que lloran,
porque recibirán consolación.

5 Bienaventurados los mansos,
porque recibirán la tierra por heredad.

6 Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia,
porque serán saciados.

7 Bienaventurados los misericordiosos,
porque alcanzarán misericordia.

8 Bienaventurados los de limpio corazón,
porque verán a Dios.

9 Bienaventurados los pacificadores,
porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.

10 Bienaventurados los que padecen persecución por causa de la justicia,
porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos.

11 Bienaventurados seréis cuando por mi causa os insulten, os persigan y digan toda clase de mal contra vosotros, mintiendo.

12 »Gozaos y alegraos, porque vuestra recompensa es grande en los cielos, pues así persiguieron a los profetas que vivieron antes de vosotros.

La sal de la tierra

13 »Vosotros sois la sal de la tierra; pero si la sal pierde su sabor, ¿con qué será salada? No sirve más para nada, sino para ser echada fuera y pisoteada por los hombres.

La luz del mundo

14 »Vosotros sois la luz del mundo; una ciudad asentada sobre un monte no se puede esconder.15 Ni se enciende una luz y se pone debajo de una vasija, sino sobre el candelero para que alumbre a todos los que están en casa.,

16 Así alumbre vuestra luz delante de los hombres, para que vean vuestras buenas obras y glorifiquen a vuestro Padre que está en los cielos.

Jesús y la Ley

17 »No penséis que he venido a abolir la Ley o los Profetas; no he venido a abolir, sino a cumplir,18 porque de cierto os digo que antes que pasen el cielo y la tierra, ni una jota ni una tilde pasará de la Ley, hasta que todo se haya cumplido.

19 De manera que cualquiera que quebrante uno de estos mandamientos muy pequeños y así enseñe a los hombres, muy pequeño será llamado en el reino de los cielos; pero cualquiera que los cumpla y los enseñe, éste será llamado grande en el reino de los cielos.

20 »Por tanto, os digo que si vuestra justicia no fuera mayor que la de los escribas y fariseos, no entraréis en el reino de los cielos.

Sobre la ira

21 »Oísteis que fue dicho a los antiguos: “No matarás”, y cualquiera que mate será culpable de juicio.

22 Pero yo os digo que cualquiera que se enoje contra su hermano, será culpable de juicio; y cualquiera que diga “Necio” a su hermano, será culpable ante el Concilio; y cualquiera que le diga “Fatuo”, quedará expuesto al infierno de fuego.,
23 »Por tanto, si traes tu ofrenda al altar y allí te acuerdas de que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti,24 deja allí tu ofrenda delante del altar y ve, reconcíliate primero con tu hermano, y entonces vuelve y presenta tu ofrenda.25 Ponte de acuerdo pronto con tu adversario, entre tanto que estás con él en el camino, no sea que el adversario te entregue al juez, y el juez al guardia, y seas echado en la cárcel.

26 De cierto te digo que no saldrás de allí hasta que pagues el último cuadrante.,

Sobre el adulterio

27 »Oísteis que fue dicho: “No cometerás adulterio.”

28 Pero yo os digo que cualquiera que mira a una mujer para codiciarla, ya adulteró con ella en su corazón.
29 »Por tanto, si tu ojo derecho te es ocasión de caer, sácalo y échalo de ti, pues mejor te es que se pierda uno de tus miembros, y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno.

30 Y si tu mano derecha te es ocasión de caer, córtala y échala de ti, pues mejor te es que se pierda uno de tus miembros, y no que todo tu cuerpo sea arrojado al infierno.

Sobre el divorcio

31 »También fue dicho: “Cualquiera que repudie a su mujer, déle carta de divorcio.”

32 Pero yo os digo que el que repudia a su mujer, a no ser por causa de fornicación, hace que ella adultere, y el que se casa con la repudiada, comete adulterio.

Sobre los juramentos

33 »Además habéis oído que fue dicho a los antiguos: “No jurarás en falso, sino cumplirás al Señor tus juramentos.”34 Pero yo os digo: No juréis de ninguna manera: ni por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios;35 ni por la tierra, porque es el estrado de sus pies; ni por Jerusalén, porque es la ciudad del gran Rey.,36 Ni por tu cabeza jurarás, porque no puedes hacer blanco o negro un solo cabello.

37 Pero sea vuestro hablar: “Sí, sí” o “No, no”, porque lo que es más de esto, de mal procede.,

Sobre la venganza

38 »Oísteis que fue dicho: “Ojo por ojo y diente por diente.”39 Pero yo os digo: No resistáis al que es malo; antes, a cualquiera que te hiera en la mejilla derecha, vuélvele también la otra;40 al que quiera ponerte a pleito y quitarte la túnica, déjale también la capa;41 a cualquiera que te obligue a llevar carga por una milla, ve con él dos.

42 Al que te pida, dale; y al que quiera tomar de ti prestado, no se lo niegues.

Sobre el amor a los enemigos

43 »Oísteis que fue dicho: “Amarás a tu prójimo y odiarás a tu enemigo.”44 Pero yo os digo: Amad a vuestros enemigos, bendecid a los que os maldicen, haced bien a los que os odian y orad por los que os ultrajan y os persiguen,,45 para que seáis hijos de vuestro Padre que está en los cielos, que hace salir su sol sobre malos y buenos y llover sobre justos e injustos.46 Si amáis a los que os aman, ¿qué recompensa tendréis? ¿No hacen también lo mismo los publicanos?47 Y si saludáis a vuestros hermanos solamente, ¿qué hacéis de más? ¿No hacen también así los gentiles?

48 Sed, pues, vosotros perfectos, como vuestro Padre que está en los cielos es perfecto.

MATTHEW 5

The Sermon on the Mount

1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the side of a mountain and sat down.t

Blessings

(Luke 6.20-23)

2 and he taught them:

3 God blesses those people
who depend only on him.
They belong to the kingdom
of heaven!t

4  t God blesses those people
who grieve.
They will find comfort!

5  t God blesses those people
who are humble.
The earth will belong
to them!

6  t God blesses those people
who want to obey himt
more than to eat or drink.
They will be given
what they want!

7 God blesses those people
who are merciful.
They will be treated
with mercy!

8  t God blesses those people
whose hearts are pure.
They will see him!

9 God blesses those people
who make peace.
They will be called
his children!

10  t God blesses those people
who are treated badly
for doing right.
They belong to the kingdom
of heaven.t
11  t God will bless you when people insult you, mistreat you, and tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me.

12 t Be happy and excited! You will have a great reward in heaven. People did these same things to the prophets who lived long ago.

Salt and Light

(Mark 9.50; Luke 14.34,35)

13  t You are the salt for everyone on earth. But if salt no longer tastes like salt, how can it make food salty? All it is good for is to be thrown out and walked on.
14  t You are the light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, 15 t and no one lights a lamp and puts it under a clay pot. Instead, it is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house.

16 t Make your light shine, so others will see the good you do and will praise your Father in heaven.

The Law of Moses

18 t Heaven and earth may disappear. But I promise you not even a period or comma will ever disappear from the Law. Everything written in it must happen.
19 If you reject even the least important command in the Law and teach others to do the same, you will be the least important person in the kingdom of heaven. But if you obey and teach others its commands, you will have an important place in the kingdom.

20 You must obey God's commands better than the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law obey them. If you don't, I promise you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

Anger

22 But I promise you if you are angry with someone, t you will have to stand trial. If you call someone a fool, you will be taken to court. And if you say that someone is worthless, you will be in danger of the fires of hell.
23 So if you are about to place your gift on the altar and remember that someone is angry with you,

24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. Make peace with that person, then come back and offer your gift to God.
25 Before you are dragged into court, make friends with the person who has accused you of doing wrong. If you don't, you will be handed over to the judge and then to the officer who will put you in jail.

26 I promise you will not get out until you have paid the last cent you owe.

Marriage

30 t If your right hand causes you to sin, chop it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one part of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Divorce

(Matthew 19.9; Mark 10.11,12; Luke 16.18)

32 t But I tell you not to divorce your wife unless she has committed some terrible sexual sin.t If you divorce her, you will cause her to be unfaithful, just as any man who marries her is guilty of taking another man's wife.

Promises

37 When you make a promise, say only “Yes” or “No.” Anything else comes from the devil.

Revenge

(Luke 6.29,30)

42 When people ask you for something, give it to them. When they want to borrow money, lend it to them.

Love

(Luke 6.27,28,32-36)
