1 ครั้นทอดพระเนตรเห็นคนมากดังนั้น พระองค์ก็เสด็จขึ้นไปบนภูเขา และเมื่อประทับแล้ว เหล่าสาวกของพระองค์มาเฝ้าพระองค์2 และพระองค์ทรงเอ่ยพระโอษฐ์ตรัสสอนเขาว่า3 "บุคคลผู้ใดรู้สึกบกพร่องฝ่ายจิตวิญญาณ ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์เป็นของเขา4 บุคคลผู้ใดโศกเศร้า ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะว่าเขาจะได้รับการทรงปลอบประโลม5 บุคคลผู้ใดมีใจอ่อนโยน ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะว่าเขาจะได้รับแผ่นดินโลกเป็นมรดก6 บุคคลผู้ใดหิวกระหายความชอบธรรม ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะว่าเขาจะได้อิ่มบริบูรณ์7 บุคคลผู้ใดมีใจกรุณา ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะว่าเขาจะได้รับพระกรุณา8 บุคคลผู้ใดมีใจบริสุทธิ์ ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะว่าเขาจะได้เห็นพระเจ้า9 บุคคลผู้ใดสร้างสันติ ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะว่าจะได้เรียกเขาว่าเป็นบุตรของพระเจ้า10 บุคคลผู้ใดต้องถูกข่มเหงเพราะเหตุความชอบธรรม ผู้นั้นเป็นสุข เพราะว่าอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์เป็นของเขา11 เมื่อเขาจะติเตียนข่มเหงและนินทาว่าร้ายท่านทั้งหลายเป็นความเท็จเพราะเรา ท่านก็เป็นสุข12 จงชื่นชมยินดีอย่างเหลือล้น เพราะว่าบำเหน็จของท่านมีบริบูรณ์ในสวรรค์ เพราะเขาได้ข่มเหงศาสดาพยากรณ์ทั้งหลายที่อยู่ก่อนท่านเหมือนกัน13 ท่านทั้งหลายเป็นเกลือแห่งโลก แต่ถ้าเกลือนั้นหมดรสเค็มไปแล้ว จะทำให้กลับเค็มอีกอย่างไรได้ แต่นั้นไปก็ไม่เป็นประโยชน์อะไร มีแต่จะทิ้งเสียสำหรับคนเหยียบย่ำ14 ท่านทั้งหลายเป็นความสว่างของโลก นครซึ่งอยู่บนภูเขาจะปิดบังไว้ไม่ได้15 ไม่มีผู้ใดจุดเทียนแล้วนำไปวางไว้ในถัง แต่ย่อมตั้งไว้บนเชิงเทียน จะได้ส่องสว่างแก่ทุกคนที่อยู่ในเรือนนั้น16 จงให้ความสว่างของท่านส่องไปต่อหน้าคนทั้งปวงอย่างนั้น เพื่อว่าเขาได้เห็นความดีที่ท่านทำ และจะได้สรรเสริญพระบิดาของท่านผู้ทรงอยู่ในสวรรค์17 อย่าคิดว่าเรามาเพื่อจะทำลายพระราชบัญญัติหรือคำของศาสดาพยากรณ์เสีย เรามิได้มาเพื่อจะทำลาย แต่มาเพื่อจะให้สำเร็จ18 เพราะเราบอกความจริงแก่ท่านทั้งหลายว่า ถึงฟ้าและดินจะล่วงไป แม้อักษรหนึ่งหรือจุดๆหนึ่งก็จะไม่สูญไปจากพระราชบัญญัติ จนกว่าจะสำเร็จทั้งสิ้น19 เหตุฉะนั้น ผู้ใดได้ทำให้ข้อเล็กน้อยสักข้อหนึ่งในพระบัญญัตินี้เบาลง ทั้งสอนคนอื่นให้ทำอย่างนั้นด้วย ผู้นั้นจะได้ชื่อว่า เป็นผู้น้อยที่สุดในอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์ แต่ผู้ใดที่ประพฤติและสอนตามพระบัญญัติ ผู้นั้นจะได้ชื่อว่า เป็นใหญ่ในอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์20 เพราะเราบอกท่านทั้งหลายว่า ถ้าความชอบธรรมของท่านไม่ยิ่งกว่าความชอบธรรมของพวกธรรมาจารย์และพวกฟาริสี ท่านจะไม่มีวันได้เข้าในอาณาจักรแห่งสวรรค์21 ท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินว่ามีคำกล่าวในครั้งโบราณว่า `อย่าฆ่าคน' ถ้าผู้ใดฆ่าคน ผู้นั้นจะต้องถูกพิพากษาลงโทษ22 ฝ่ายเราบอกท่านทั้งหลายว่า ผู้ใดโกรธพี่น้องของตนโดยไม่มีเหตุ ผู้นั้นจะต้องถูกพิพากษาลงโทษ ถ้าผู้ใดจะพูดกับพี่น้องว่า `อ้ายบ้า' ผู้นั้นต้องถูกนำไปที่ศาลสูงให้พิพากษาลงโทษ และผู้ใดจะว่า `อ้ายโง่' ผู้นั้นจะมีโทษถึงไฟนรก23 เหตุฉะนั้น ถ้าท่านนำเครื่องบูชามาถึงแท่นบูชาแล้ว และระลึกขึ้นได้ว่า พี่น้องมีเหตุขัดเคืองข้อหนึ่งข้อใดกับท่าน24 จงวางเครื่องบูชาไว้ที่หน้าแท่นบูชา กลับไปคืนดีกับพี่น้องผู้นั้นเสียก่อน แล้วจึงค่อยมาถวายเครื่องบูชาของท่าน25 จงปรองดองกับคู่ความโดยเร็วขณะที่พากันไป เกลือกว่าในเวลาหนึ่งเวลาใดคู่ความนั้นจะมอบท่านไว้กับผู้พิพากษา แล้วผู้พิพากษาจะมอบท่านไว้กับผู้คุม และท่านจะต้องถูกขังไว้ในเรือนจำ26 เราบอกความจริงแก่ท่านว่า ท่านจะออกจากที่นั่นไม่ได้กว่าท่านจะได้ใช้หนี้จนครบ27 ท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินว่ามีคำกล่าวในครั้งโบราณว่า `อย่าล่วงประเวณีผัวเมียเขา'28 ฝ่ายเราบอกท่านทั้งหลายว่า ผู้ใดมองผู้หญิงเพื่อให้เกิดใจกำหนัดในหญิงนั้น ผู้นั้นได้ล่วงประเวณีในใจกับหญิงนั้นแล้ว29 ถ้าตาข้างขวาของท่านทำให้ท่านหลงผิด จงควักออกและโยนมันทิ้งเสียจากท่าน เพราะว่าจะเป็นประโยชน์แก่ท่านมากกว่าที่จะเสียอวัยวะไปอย่างหนึ่ง แต่ทั้งตัวของท่านไม่ต้องถูกทิ้งลงในนรก30 และถ้ามือข้างขวาของท่านทำให้ท่านหลงผิด จงตัดออกและโยนมันทิ้งเสียจากท่าน เพราะว่าจะเป็นประโยชน์แก่ท่านมากกว่าที่จะเสียอวัยวะไปอย่างหนึ่ง แต่ทั้งตัวของท่านไม่ต้องถูกทิ้งลงในนรก31 ยังมีคำกล่าวไว้ว่า `ผู้ใดจะหย่าภรรยา ก็ให้เขาทำหนังสือหย่าให้แก่ภรรยานั้น'32 ฝ่ายเราบอกท่านทั้งหลายว่า ผู้ใดจะหย่าภรรยา เพราะเหตุอื่นนอกจากการเล่นชู้ ก็เท่ากับว่าผู้นั้นทำให้หญิงนั้นล่วงประเวณี และถ้าผู้ใดจะรับหญิงซึ่งหย่าแล้วเช่นนั้นมาเป็นภรรยา ผู้นั้นก็ล่วงประเวณีด้วย33 อีกประการหนึ่ง ท่านทั้งหลายได้ยินว่ามีคำกล่าวในครั้งโบราณว่า `อย่าเสียคำสัตย์ปฏิญาณ แต่จงปฏิบัติตามคำสัตย์ปฏิญาณของท่านต่อองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า'34 ฝ่ายเราบอกท่านทั้งหลายว่า อย่าปฏิญาณเลย จะอ้างถึงสวรรค์ก็ดี เพราะสวรรค์เป็นบัลลังก์ของพระเจ้า35 หรือจะอ้างถึงแผ่นดินโลกก็ดี เพราะแผ่นดินโลกเป็นที่รองพระบาทของพระองค์ หรือจะอ้างถึงกรุงเยรูซาเล็มก็ดี เพราะกรุงเยรูซาเล็มเป็นราชธานีของพระมหากษัตริย์36 อย่าปฏิญาณโดยอ้างถึงศีรษะของตน เพราะท่านจะกระทำให้ผมขาวหรือดำไปสักเส้นหนึ่งก็ไม่ได้37 จริงก็จงว่าจริง ไม่ก็ว่าไม่ พูดแต่เพียงนี้ก็พอ คำพูดเกินนี้ไปมาจากความชั่ว38 ท่านทั้งหลายเคยได้ยินคำซึ่งกล่าวไว้ว่า `ตาแทนตา และฟันแทนฟัน'39 ฝ่ายเราบอกท่านว่า อย่าต่อสู้คนชั่ว ถ้าผู้ใดตบแก้มขวาของท่าน ก็จงหันแก้มอีกข้างหนึ่งให้เขาด้วย40 ถ้าผู้ใดอยากจะฟ้องศาลเพื่อจะริบเอาเสื้อของท่าน ก็จงให้เสื้อคลุมแก่เขาด้วย41 ถ้าผู้ใดจะเกณฑ์ท่านให้เดินทางไปหนึ่งกิโลเมตร ก็ให้เลยไปกับเขาถึงสองกิโลเมตร42 ถ้าเขาจะขอสิ่งใดจากท่านก็จงให้ อย่าเมินหน้าจากผู้ที่อยากขอยืมจากท่าน43 ท่านทั้งหลายเคยได้ยินคำซึ่งกล่าวไว้ว่า `จงรักเพื่อนบ้าน และเกลียดชังศัตรู'44 ฝ่ายเราบอกท่านว่า จงรักศัตรูของท่าน จงอวยพรแก่ผู้ที่สาปแช่งท่าน จงทำดีแก่ผู้ที่เกลียดชังท่าน และจงอธิษฐานเพื่อผู้ที่ปฏิบัติต่อท่านอย่างเหยียดหยามและข่มเหงท่าน45 จงทำดังนี้เพื่อท่านทั้งหลายจะเป็นบุตรของพระบิดาของท่านผู้ทรงสถิตในสวรรค์ เพราะว่าพระองค์ทรงให้ดวงอาทิตย์ของพระองค์ขึ้นส่องสว่างแก่คนดีและคนชั่ว และให้ฝนตกแก่คนชอบธรรมและแก่คนอธรรม46 แม้ว่าท่านรักผู้ที่รักท่าน ท่านจะได้บำเหน็จอะไร ถึงพวกเก็บภาษีก็กระทำอย่างนั้นมิใช่หรือ47 ถ้าท่านทักทายแต่พี่น้องของตนฝ่ายเดียว ท่านได้กระทำอะไรเป็นพิเศษยิ่งกว่าคนทั้งปวงเล่า ถึงพวกเก็บภาษีก็กระทำอย่างนั้นมิใช่หรือ48 เหตุฉะนี้ ท่านทั้งหลายจงเป็นคนดีรอบคอบ เหมือนอย่างพระบิดาของท่านผู้ทรงสถิตในสวรรค์เป็นผู้ดีรอบคอบ"

Matthew 5

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat down, his disciples came unto him:2 and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.14 Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.15 Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house.16 Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy, but to fulfil.18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished.19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:22 but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.23 If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee,24 leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, while thou art with him in the way; lest haply the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.26 Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the last farthing.

27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery:28 but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.29 And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.30 And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body go into hell.31 It was said also, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:32 but I say unto you, that every one that putteth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery.

33 Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:34 but I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the throne of God;35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not make one hair white or black.37 But let your speech be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: and whatsoever is more than these is of the evil one.

38 Ye have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:39 but I say unto you, resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.40 And if any man would go to law with thee, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two.42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

43 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy:44 but I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;45 that ye may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust.46 For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same?48 Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
