Mateo 5

Jesús enseña a la gente

1 Cuando Jesús vio a toda esa gente, subió a la ladera de una montaña, se sentó y allí llegaron sus seguidores.2 Entonces comenzó a enseñarles lo siguiente:
3 «Afortunadost los que reconocen su necesidad espiritual,porque el reino de Diost les pertenece.
4 Afortunados los que están tristes,
porque Dios los consolará.
5 Afortunados los que son humildes,
porque la tierra que Dios prometiót será de ellos.
6 Afortunados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia,
porque quedarán completamente satisfechos por Dios.
7 Afortunados los que tienen compasión de otros,
porque Dios también tendrá compasión de ellos.
8 Afortunados los que tienen corazón puro,
porque ellos verán a Dios.
9 Afortunados los que se esfuerzan por conseguir la paz,
porque ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios.

10 Afortunados los que son maltratados por practicar la justicia,
porque el reino de Dios les pertenece.
11 »Cuando la gente los insulte, los persiga y hable mal de ustedes por seguirme, sepan que son afortunados a los ojos de Dios.

12 Pónganse contentos y alégrense porque van a recibir una gran recompensa en los cielos. Así también fue como maltrataron a los profetas que vivieron antes de ustedes.

Sal y luz del mundo

13 »Ustedes son la sal de la tierra, pero si la sal pierde su sabor, ¿cómo podría volver a ser salada? Ya no sirve para nada sino para ser tirada y pisada por la gente.
14 »Ustedes son la luz que alumbra al mundo. Una ciudad que está en un monte no se puede esconder.15 Ni se enciende una lámpara para ponerla debajo de un cesto, sino sobre el candelero para que ilumine a todos en la casa.

16 Así mismo, ustedes deben ser luz para los demás de tal manera que todos puedan ver sus buenas obras y dar honra a su Padre que está en los cielos.

Jesús y la ley

17 »No piensen que he venido para destruir la ley de Moisést o la enseñanza de los profetas. No he venido para destruirlas, sino para darles completo significado.18 Les digo la verdad: hasta que pasen el cielo y la tierra, no pasará ni una letra ni una tilde de la ley hasta que todo esto se cumpla.19 Así que cualquiera que desobedezca alguno de los mandamientos por muy pequeño que sea y les enseñe a otros a desobedecerlo, será considerado muy pequeño en el reino de Diost. En cambio, el que los obedezca todos y enseñe a obedecerlos será considerado grande en el reino de Dios.

20 Porque les digo a ustedes, no entrarán en el reino de Dios a menos que practiquen la justicia mejor que los maestros de la ley y los fariseost.

Jesús enseña sobre la reconciliación

21 »Ustedes han oído que se les dijo a los antepasados: "No mates,t y el que cometa asesinato tendrá que responder ante un juez".

22 Pero, ahora yo les digo que todo el que se enoje con otro tendrá que responder ante el tribunal. El que insulte a alguien, tendrá que responder ante el Consejot; y el que maldiga a otro, tendrá que responder por eso en el fuego del infierno.
23 »Así que si vas al altar a dar una ofrenda a Dios y te acuerdas de que alguien tiene algo contra ti,

24 deja ahí tu ofrenda y ve a hacer las paces con esa persona. Luego regresa para dar tu ofrenda a Dios.
25 »Reconcíliate pronto con tu adversario. Llega a un acuerdo con él mientras van hacia el juzgado, porque si no, él te entregará al juez, y el juez te entregará al guardia para que te meta a la cárcel.

26 Te digo la verdad: no saldrás de allí hasta que hayas pagado hasta el último centavo.

Jesús enseña sobre la inmoralidad sexual

27 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: "No cometas adulteriot.t28 Pero ahora yo te digo que si alguno mira a una mujer con el deseo de tener relaciones sexuales con ella, en su mente ya ha cometido pecado con ella.29 Así que si tu ojo derecho te hace pecar, sácalo y tíralo. Es mejor que pierdas parte de tu cuerpo a que todo el cuerpo sea echado al infierno.

30 Y si tu mano derecha te hace pecar, córtala y tírala. Es mejor que pierdas parte de tu cuerpo a que todo el cuerpo sea echado al infierno.

Jesús enseña sobre el divorcio

31 »También se dijo antes: "Cualquiera que se divorcie de su esposa, debe darle un certificado de divorcio".t

32 Pero ahora yo digo que el hombre que se divorcie de su esposa, a no ser en caso de pecado sexual, hace que ella cometa adulteriot. El hombre que se case con una mujer divorciada también está cometiendo adulterio.

Jesús enseña sobre los juramentos

33 »Ustedes también han oído que se les dijo a los antepasados: "No dejes de cumplir ningún juramento, sino cumple tus juramentos a Dios".t34 Pero ahora yo les digo que es mejor no jurar por nada. No juren por el cielo, porque es el trono de Dios.35 No juren tampoco por la tierra, porque es de Dios. No juren por Jerusalén, porque también le pertenece a él, el gran Rey.36 Tampoco jures por tu cabeza, porque ni siquiera puedes hacer que un cabello sea negro o blanco.

37 Si quieres decir "sí", solamente di "sí", y si quieres decir "no", solamente di "no". Todo lo que se diga de más, viene del malignot.

Jesús enseña sobre las peleas

38 »Ustedes han oído que se dijo: "Ojo por ojo y diente por diente".t39 Pero ahora yo les digo: no te pongas en contra de una persona mala. Mejor, si alguien te da una bofetada en la mejilla derecha, deja que te pegue también en la otra.40 Si alguien trata de ponerte una demanda para quedarse con tu camisa, entrégale también tu capa.41 Si alguien te obliga a caminar un kilómetrot con él, camina dos.

42 Al que te pida algo, dáselo; y al que te pida algo prestado, préstaselo.

Amen a sus enemigos

43 »Ustedes también han oído que se dijo: "Ama a tus semejantest pero odia a tus enemigos".44 Pero yo les digo que amen a sus enemigos y pidan en sus oraciones por los que los persiguen.45 De esta forma, ustedes serán hijos de su Padre que está en el cielo. Él hace que el sol salga tanto para los malos como para los buenos y que la lluvia caiga tanto para los justos como para los injustos.46 Si ustedes solamente aman a los que los aman, ¿creen que merecen alguna recompensa por eso? Incluso los cobradores de impuestost aman a sus amigos.47 Y si ustedes sólo son buena gente con sus amigos, ¿creen que están haciendo algo fuera de lo común? Hasta los que no conocen a Dios son así.

48 Por eso, sean ustedes perfectos así como su Padre que está en el cielo es perfecto.

Matthew 5

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 "Blessed are the tgentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Disciples and the World

13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.

14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.19 Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Personal Relationships

21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be tliable to the court.'22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'tYou good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before tthe supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the tfiery hell.23 Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.25 Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.26 Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last tcent.

27 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.29 If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.30 If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

31 "It was said, 'WHOEVER SENDS HIS WIFE AWAY, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE';32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

33 "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'34 But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is THE CITY OF THE GREAT KING.36 Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.37 But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil.

38 "You have heard that it was said, 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.'39 But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.40 If anyone wants to sue you and take your tshirt, let him have your tcoat also.41 Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two.42 Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

43 "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'44 But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?47 If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?48 Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
