Matteo 6

1 State attenti a non fare pubblicamente le vostre buone azioni per essere ammirati, altrimenti perderete la ricompensa dal Padre vostro che è in cielo.2 Quando fate l’elemosina, non fatelo sapere in giro, come fanno gli ipocriti, che fanno suonare la tromba nelle sinagoghe e per le strade per richiamare l’attenzione della gente sui loro atti di carità! Vi dico in tutta sincerità che, così facendo, hanno già ricevuto tutta la loro ricompensa.3 Ma quando fate un favore a qualcuno, fatelo di nascosto, non dite alla vostra mano sinistra ciò che sta facendo la destra.4 E il Padre vostro, che conosce tutti i segreti, vi ricompenserà.

Preghiere e digiuno.

5 Ed ora parliamo della preghiera. Quando pregate, non fate come gl’ipocriti che si mettono a pregare in pubblico, agli angoli delle strade e nelle sinagoghe, dove tutti li possono vedere. Vi assicuro che questa è la sola ricompensa che ottengono.6 Ma, quando pregate, restatevene per conto vostro, soli soletti; chiudete la porta dietro di voi e pregate il Padre vostro segretamente. E Dio, che conosce i vostri segreti, vi ricompenserà.7-8 Non recitate continuamente le stesse preghiere, come fanno i pagani, che pensano di essere esauditi se ripetono all’infinito le stesse parole. Ricordate che vostro Padre sa esattamente ciò di cui avete bisogno ancor prima che glielo chiediate.9 Pregate così: “Padre nostro che sei in cielo, sia santificato il tuo nome.10 Venga il tuo Regno. Sia fatta la tua volontà qui in terra, come in cielo.11 Dacci anche oggi il cibo necessario12 e perdona i nostri peccati, come noi abbiamo perdonato quelli che ci hanno fatto dei torti.13 Fa’ che non cediamo alla tentazione, ma liberaci dal male. Amen!”14-15 Vostro Padre che è in cielo vi perdonerà, se perdonerete quelli che hanno peccato contro di voi; ma se non perdonerete gli altri neanche lui vi perdonerà.16 Ed ora parliamo del digiuno. Quando digiunate per uno scopo spirituale, non fatelo in pubblico, come gl’ipocriti, che cercano di apparire pallidi ed emaciati per farsi ammirare dalla gente. Per la verità, quella è la sola ricompensa che ne avranno.17 Quando digiunate, mostratevi in forma, invece,18 in modo che nessuno sospetti che avete fame, eccetto vostro Padre, che conosce tutti i segreti. Ed egli vi ricompenserà.19 Non accumulate ricchezze qui sulla terra, dove possono essere rovinate dai tarli e dalla ruggine o rubate dai ladri.20 Accumulatele in cielo, invece, dove non perderanno mai il loro valore e sono al sicuro dai ladri.21 Se i tuoi risparmi sono in cielo, anche il tuo cuore sarà là.22 Se il tuo occhio è puro, tutta la tua anima ne sarà illuminata.23 Ma se il tuo occhio è contaminato da pensieri e desideri cattivi resterai nel più profondo buio spirituale. E non puoi immaginare quanto quel buio possa essere profondo!24 Non potete servire due padroni: Dio e il denaro. Perché o odierete uno e amerete l’altro, o viceversa.25 Questo perciò è il mio consiglio: non preoccupatevi delle cose materiali come mangiare, bere, denaro e vestiti. Non è forse vero che la vita è più importante del cibo e che il corpo è più importante dei vestiti?.26 Guardate gli uccelli! Non si preoccupano del cibo. Non seminano, non mietono, né fanno provviste, perché il Padre vostro che è in cielo li nutre. E voi siete di gran lunga più importanti degli uccelli per lui!27 Pensate forse che tutte le vostre preoccupazioni possano allungarvi la vita anche di un solo momento?28 E perché preoccuparsi del-l’ab-bi-glia-mento? Guardate i gigli di campo, non si preoccupano del loro.29 Eppure io vi dico che nemmeno il re Salomone in tutta la sua gloria ha mai avuto un vestito così bello!30 E se Dio si cura tanto dei fiori, che sono qui oggi e domani non ci saranno più, non avrà certamente più cura di voi, o uomini di poca fede?31-32 Perciò, non preoccupatevi affatto di avere cibo e abiti a sufficienza! Perché essere come i pagani? Sono loro che vivono per queste cose e se ne preoccupano fino in fondo. Ma il vostro Padre che è in cielo sa già perfettamente che ne avete bisogno.33 E ve le darà volentieri, se voi cercherete prima il Regno di Dio e la sua giustizia.34 Perciò, non siate ansiosi per il vostro domani. Sarà il domani stesso a portarvi nuove preoccupazioni. Preoccupatevi di un giorno per volta.

Matthew 6

1 Take heed that ye do not your righteousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.2 When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:4 that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

5 And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thine inner chamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee.7 And in praying use not vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.8 Be not therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.9 After this manner therefore pray ye. Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.11 Give us this day our daily bread.12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.13 And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen of men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face;18 that thou be not seen of men to fast, but of thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall recompense thee.

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal:20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:21 for where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also.22 The lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is the darkness!24 No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.25 Therefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment?26 Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value then they?27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life?28 And why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:29 yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.30 But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?31 Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.34 Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
