As julle armes help

1 “Moenie julle godsdienstige pligte in die openbaar nakom om deur mense gesien te word nie, want dan kry julle geen beloning van julle Vader wat in die hemel is nie.

2 “As jy byvoorbeeld armes help, moet dit nie uitbasuin nie. Dit doen die skynheiliges in die sinagoges en op straat, sodat mense met lof van hulle kan praat. Dit verseker Ek julle: Hulle het hulle beloning klaar weg. 3 Nee, as jy iets vir die armes gee, moet jou linkerhand nie weet wat jou regterhand doen nie, 4 sodat jou goeie daad verborge kan bly. Jou Vader wat sien wat verborge is, sal jou beloon.”

As julle bid

(Luk. 11:2-4)

5 “Verder, as julle bid, moet julle nie soos die skynheiliges wees nie. Hulle hou daarvan om in die sinagoges en op die straathoeke te staan en bid sodat die mense hulle kan sien. Dit verseker Ek julle: Hulle het hulle beloning klaar weg. 6 Nee, as jy bid, gaan na jou kamer toe, maak die deur toe en bid tot jou Vader wat jy nie kan sien nie. Jou Vader wat sien wat verborge is, sal jou beloon.

7 “Wanneer julle bid, moet julle nie soos die heidene 'n stortvloed van woorde gebruik nie. Hulle verbeel hulle hulle gebede sal verhoor word omdat hulle baie woorde gebruik. 8 Moet dan nie soos hulle maak nie, want julle Vader weet wat julle nodig het, nog voordat julle dit van Hom vra.

9 “So moet julle bid: “Ons Vader wat in die hemel is, laat u Naam geheilig word;

10 laat u koninkryk kom; laat u wil ook op die aarde geskied, net soos in die hemel. 11 Gee ons vandag ons daaglikse brood; 12 en vergeef ons ons oortredings soos ons ook dié vergewe wat teen ons oortree; 13 en laat ons nie in versoeking kom nie maar verlos ons van die Bose.t 14 “As julle ander mense hulle oortredings vergewe, sal julle hemelse Vader julle ook vergewe. 15 Maar as julle ander mense nie vergewe nie, sal julle Vader julle ook nie julle oortredings vergewe nie.”

As julle vas

16 “As julle vas, moet julle nie soos skynheiliges met lang gesigte rondloop nie. Hulle mismaak hulle gesigte sodat die mense kan sien dat hulle vas. Dit verseker Ek julle: Hulle het hulle beloning klaar weg. 17 Nee, as jy vas, versorg jou hare en was jou gesig 18 sodat niemand kan sien dat jy vas nie, behalwe jou Vader wat jy nie kan sien nie. Jou Vader wat sien wat verborge is, sal jou beloon.”

Skatte in die hemel

(Luk. 12:33-34)

19 “Moenie vir julle skatte op aarde bymekaarmaak waar mot en roes dit verniel en waar diewe inbreek en dit steel nie. 20 Maak vir julle skatte in die hemel bymekaar, waar mot en roes dit nie verniel nie en waar diewe nie inbreek en dit steel nie. 21 Waar jou skat is, daar sal jou hart ook wees.”

Die lig van die liggaam

(Luk. 11:34-36)

22 “Die lamp van die liggaam is die oog. As jou oog goed is, sal jou hele liggaam lig hê. 23 Maar as jou oog sleg is, sal jou hele liggaam sonder lig wees. As die lig in jou donker is, hoe donker moet dit dan nie wees nie!”

God en Mammon

(Luk. 16:13)

24 “Niemand kan vir twee base tegelyk werk nie. Hy sal óf die een minder ag en die ander een hoër, óf vir die een meer oorhê en die ander een afskeep. Julle kan nie God én Mammon dien nie.”

Die sorge van die lewe

(Luk. 12:22-34)

25 “Daarom sê Ek vir julle: Moet julle nie bekommer oor julle lewe, oor wat julle moet eet of drink nie, of oor julle liggaam, oor wat julle moet aantrek nie. Is die lewe nie belangriker as kos en die liggaam as klere nie? 26 Kyk na die wilde voëls: hulle saai nie en hulle oes nie en hulle maak nie in skure bymekaar nie; julle hemelse Vader sorg vir hulle. Is julle nie baie meer werd as hulle nie? 27 Trouens, wie van julle kan deur hom te bekommer sy lewe met een enkele uur verleng? 28 En wat bekommer julle julle oor klere? Let op hoe groei die veldlelies: hulle swoeg nie en hulle maak nie klere nie. 29 Maar Ek sê vir julle: Selfs Salomo in al sy prag was nie geklee soos een van hulle nie. 30 As God dan die gras van die veld, wat vandag nog daar is en môre verbrand word, so versier, hoeveel te meer sal Hy dan nie vir julle sorg nie, julle kleingelowiges?

31 “Julle moet julle dus nie bekommer en vra: ‘Wat moet ons eet of wat moet ons drink of wat moet ons aantrek?’ nie. 32 Dit is alles dinge waaroor die ongelowiges begaan is. Julle hemelse Vader weet tog dat julle dit alles nodig het. 33 Nee, beywer julle allereers vir die koninkryk van God en vir die wil van God, dan sal Hy julle ook al hierdie dinge gee.

34 “Moet julle dus nie oor môre bekommer nie, want môre bring sy eie bekommernis. Elke dag bring genoeg moeilikheid van sy eie.”

Matthew 6

1 TAKE heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven.2 Therefore when thou dost an almsdeed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.3 But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth.4 That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.5 And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.6 But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.7 And when you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens. For they think that in their much speaking they may be heard.8 Be not you therefore like to them, for your Father knoweth what is needful for you, before you ask him.9 Thus therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.11 Give us this day our supersubstantial bread.12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.13 And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.14 For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences.15 But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences.16 And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.17 But thou, when thou fastest anoint thy head, and wash thy face;18 That thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, will repay thee.19 Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth: where the rust, and moth consume, and where thieves break through and steal.20 But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal.21 For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also.22 The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body shall be lightsome.23 But if thy eye be evil thy whole body shall be darksome. If then the light that is in thee, be darkness: the darkness itself how great shall it be!24 No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.25 Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat: and the body more than the raiment?26 Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they?27 And which of you by taking thought, can add to his stature by one cubit?28 And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin.29 But I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these.30 And if the grass of the field, which is to day, and to morrow is cast into the oven, God doth so clothe: how much more you, O ye of little faith?31 Be not solicitous therefore, saying, What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed?32 For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things.33 Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.34 Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.
