1 Trong ngày đó, người ta đọc sách Môi-se có dân sự nghe; trong đó có chép rằng người Am-môn và người Mô-áp đời đời không được vào hội của Đức Chúa Trời,2 bởi vì chúng nó không đem bánh và nước đến đón dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, song dùng bạc thỉnh Ba-la-am đến rủa sả dân Y-sơ-ra-ên (nhưng Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi đổi sự rủa sả ra sự phước hạnh).3 Xảy khi chúng đã nghe luật pháp rồi, bèn phân rẽ khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên các dân ngoại bang.4 Vả, trước việc đó, thầy tế lễ Ê-li-a-síp, mà đã được lập coi sóc các phòng của đền Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi,5 và là bà con với Tô-bi-gia, có sắm sửa cho người ấy một cái phòng lớn, là nơi trước người ta dùng để những của lễ chay, hương liệu, khí dụng, thuế một phần mười về lúa mì, rượu mới, và dầu, tức những vật theo lệ đã định cho người Lê-vi, kẻ ca hát, và người canh giữ cửa, luôn với của lễ dâng giơ lên của thầy tế lễ.6 Khi các điều đó xảy đến thì không có tôi ở tại Giê-ru-sa-lem; vì nhằm năm thứ ba mươi hai đời Ạt-ta-xét-xe, vua Ba-by-lôn, tôi mắc phải trở về cùng vua; cuối một ít lâu, tôi có xin phép vua đặng đi.7 Tôi đến Giê-ru-sa-lem, bèn hiểu điều ác mà Ê-li-a-síp vì Tô-bi-gia đã làm ra, vì có sắm sửa cho người một cái phòng trong hành lang của đền Đức Chúa Trời.8 Tôi thấy điều đó lấy làm cực tệ, nên quăng ra khỏi phòng ấy các vật dụng của nhà Tô-bi-gia.9 Đoạn, tôi biểu người ta dọn cái phòng ấy cho sạch sẽ; kế ấy tôi đem vào lại các khí dụng của đền Đức Chúa Trời, của lễ chay và hương liệu.10 Tôi cũng hay rằng người ta không có cấp các phần của người Lê-vi cho họ; vì vậy, những kẻ ca hát và người Lê-vi hầu việc, ai nấy đều đã trốn về đồng ruộng mình.11 Tôi bèn quở trách các quan trưởng, mà rằng: Cớ sao đền của Đức Chúa Trời bị bỏ như vậy? Đoạn, tôi hiệp lại chúng mà đặt họ trong chức cũ mình.12 Bấy giờ, cả Giu-đa đều đem đến trong kho thuế một phần mười về lúa mì, rượu mới, và dầu.13 Tôi đặt Sê-lê-mia, thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc, ký lục, và Phê-đa-gia trong các người Lê-vi, coi các kho tàng; còn Ha-nan, con trai của Xác-cua, cháu Mát-ta-nia, làm phó; các người ấy được kể là trung thành, và bổn phận chúng là phân phát vật cho anh em mình.14 Đức Chúa Trời tôi ôi! vì cớ điều này, xin nhớ đến tôi, và chớ bôi xóa các việc tốt lành mà tôi đã làm vì đền của Đức Chúa Trời tôi và về điều phải gìn giữ tại đó.15 Về lúc đó, tôi thấy trong Giu-đa, mấy người ép nho nơi máy ép rượu nhằm ngày sa-bát, đem bó lúa mình vào, chở nó trên lừa, và cũng chở rượu, trái nho, trái vả, và các vật nặng, mà đem về Giê-ru-sa-lem trong ngày sa-bát. Ngày chúng nó bán vật thực ấy, tôi có làm chứng nghịch cùng chúng nó.16 Cũng có người Ty-rơ ở tại đó, đem cá và các thứ hàng hóa đến bán cho người Giu-đa và tại thành Giê-ru-sa-lem trong ngày sa-bát.17 Bấy giờ tôi quở trách các người tước vị Giu-đa, mà rằng: Việc xấu xa các ngươi làm đây là chi, mà làm cho ô uế ngày sa-bát?18 Tổ phụ các ngươi há chẳng đã làm như vậy sao? Nên nỗi Đức Chúa Trời há chẳng có dẫn tai họa kia đến trên chúng ta và trên thành này ư? Còn các ngươi làm ô uế ngày sa-bát mà tăng thêm cơn thạnh nộ cho Y-sơ-ra-ên!19 Ấy vậy, khi các cửa Giê-ru-sa-lem khởi khuất trong bóng tối trước ngày sa-bát, tôi bèn truyền người ta đóng cửa lại và dặn biểu chúng nó chỉ mở nó ra sau ngày sa-bát; lại cắt đặt mấy kẻ trong đầy tớ tôi giữ cửa để không ai gánh chở đồ vào thành trong ngày sa-bát.20 Vậy, kẻ buôn người bán các thứ hàng hóa một hai lần ban đêm phải ngủ ở ngoài thành Giê-ru-sa-lem.21 Đoạn, tôi quở trách chúng nó mà rằng: Cớ sao các ngươi ban đêm ngủ tại trước vách thành như vậy? Nếu các ngươi còn làm nữa, tất ta sẽ tra tay trên các ngươi. Từ lúc đó về sau, chúng nó không có đến nhằm ngày sa-bát nữa.22 Tôi dạy biểu người Lê-vi hãy dọn mình cho thánh sạch và đến canh giữ các cửa, đặng biệt ngày sa-bát ra thánh. Hỡi Đức Chúa Trời tôi ôi! xin hãy vì tôi nhớ đến điều đó, và xin thương xót tôi tùy sự nhân từ lớn lao của Ngài.23 Cũng trong lúc đó, tôi thấy những người Giu-đa lấy đàn bà Ách-đốt, Am-môn, và Mô-áp, làm vợ;24 con cái của chúng nó nói phần nửa tiếng Ách-đốt, không biết nói tiếng Giu-đa, nhưng nói tùy theo tiếng của dân này hay là dân kia.25 Tôi quở trách chúng nó, rủa sả chúng nó, đánh đập một vài người trong chúng nó, nhổ tóc chúng nó, biểu chúng nó chỉ Đức Chúa Trời thề, mà rằng: Các ngươi sẽ không gả con gái mình cho con trai họ, hay là cưới con gái họ cho con trai mình, hoặc là cưới cho chính mình các ngươi!26 Sa-lô-môn, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên há chẳng có phạm tội trong điều đó sao? Vả, trong nhiều dân tộc không có một vua nào giống như người; người được Đức Chúa Trời của mình thương yêu, và Đức Chúa Trời đặt người làm vua trên cả Y-sơ-ra-ên: dẫu vậy, người cũng bị đàn bà ngoại bang xui cho phạm tội!27 Chúng ta há sẽ nghe theo các ngươi mà làm những điều ác lớn này, lấy người đàn bà ngoại bang mà vi phạm cùng Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta sao?28 Có một trong các con trai của Giô-gia-đa, cháu Ê-li-a-síp, thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm, là rể của San-ba-lát, người Hô-rôn; vì cớ ấy tôi đuổi hắn khỏi tôi.29 Hỡi Đức Chúa Trời tôi ôi! xin nhớ lại chúng nó, vì chúng nó đã làm ô uế chức tế lễ và sự giao ước của chức tế lễ và của người Lê-vi.30 Như vậy, tôi dọn sạch chúng cho khỏi các kẻ ngoại bang, và định ban thứ cho những thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi, mỗi người trong chức việc mình;31 cũng khiến dân sự dâng củi theo kỳ nhất định và các thổ sản đầu mùa. Đức Chúa Trời tôi ôi, xin hãy nhớ đến tôi mà làm ơn cho tôi!

Nehemiah 13

Further Reforms by Nehemiah

1 On that day the book of Moses was read aloud in the hearingt of the people. They foundt written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite may ever enter the assembly of God,2 for they had not met the Israelites with foodt and water, but instead had hired Balaam to curse them. (Our God, however, turned the curse into blessing.)

3 When they heard the law, they removed from Israel all who were of mixed ancestry.
4 But prior to this time, Eliashib the priest, a relative of Tobiah, had been appointed over the storeroomss of the temple of our God.

5 He made for himself a large storeroom where previously they had been keepingt the grain offering, the incense, and the vessels, along with the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil as commanded for the Levites, the singers, the gate keepers, and the offering for the priests.
6 During all this time I was not in Jerusalem,s for in the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes of Babylon, I had gone back to the king. After some timet I had requested leave of the king,7 and I returned to Jerusalem. Then I discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah by supplying him with a storeroom in the courts of the temple of God.8 I was very upset, and I threw all of Tobiah’s household possessions out of the storeroom.

9 Then I gave instructions that the storerooms should be purified, and I brought back the equipmentt of the temple of God, along with the grain offering and the incense.
10 I also discovered that the grain offerings for the Levites had not been provided, and that as a result the Levites and the singers who performed this work had all gone off to their fields.

11 So I registered a complaint with the leaders, asking “Why is the temple of God neglected?” Then I gathered them and reassigned them to their positions.t
12 Then all of Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil to the storerooms.

13 I gave instructionss that Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a certain Levite named Pedaiah be put in charge oft the storerooms, and that Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, be their assistant,t for they were regarded as trustworthy. It was then their responsibility to oversee the distribution to their colleagues.t

14 Please remember me for this, O my God, and do not wipe out the kindness that I have done for the temple of my God and for its services!
15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath, bringing in heaps of grain and loading them onto donkeys, along with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, and bringing them to Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I warned them on the day that they sold these provisions.16 The people from Tyres who lived there were bringing fish and all kinds of merchandise and were selling it on the Sabbath to the people of Judah – and in Jerusalem, of all places!t17 So I registered a complaint with the nobles of Judah, saying to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?

18 Isn’t this the way your ancestorst acted, causing our God to bring on them and on this city all this misfortune? And now you are causing even more wrath on Israel, profaning the Sabbath like this!”
19 When the evening shadowst began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I orderedt the doors to be closed. I further directed that they were not to be opened until after the Sabbath. I positionedt some of my young men at the gates so that no load could enter on the Sabbath day.20 The traders and sellers of all kinds of merchandise spent the night outside Jerusalem once or twice.21 But I warned them and said,t “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you repeat this, I will forcibly remove you!”t From that time on they did not show up on the Sabbath.s

22 Then I directed the Levites to purify themselves and come and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy.
For this please remember me, O my God, and have pity on me in keeping with your great love.
23 Also in those days I saw the men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod (or the language of one of the other peoples mentionedt) and were unable to speak the language of Judah.25 So I entered a complaint with them. I called down a curse on them, and I struck some of the men and pulled out their hair. I had them swear by God saying, “You will not marry offt your daughters to their sons, and you will not take any of their daughters as wives for your sons or for yourselves!26 Was it not because of things like these that King Solomon of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God madet him king over all Israel. But the foreign wives made even him sin!

27 Should we then in your case hear that you do all this great evil, thereby being unfaithful to our God by marryingt foreign wives?”

28 Now one of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. So I banished him from my sight.

29 Please remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, the covenant of the priesthood,s and the Levites.
30 So I purified them of everything foreign, and I assigned specifict duties to the priests and the Levites.

31 I also provided fort the wood offering at the appointed times and also for the first fruits.
Please remember me for good, O my God.
