El pueblo se queja ante Moisés

1  Poco después el pueblo comenzó a quejarse de las privaciones que enfrentaba, y el SEÑOR oyó todo lo que decían. Entonces el enojo del SEÑOR se encendió contra ellos y envió un fuego que ardió entre ellos y destruyó a algunos en las afueras del campamento. 2 Así que el pueblo pidió ayuda a gritos a Moisés, y cuando él oró al SEÑOR, el fuego se apagó. 3 Después, ese lugar fue conocido como Tabera (que significa «el lugar que arde»), porque el fuego del SEÑOR ardió allí entre ellos.

4 Entonces la gentuza extranjera que viajaba con los israelitas comenzó a tener fuertes antojos por las cosas buenas de Egipto. Y el pueblo de Israel también comenzó a quejarse: «¡Oh, si tuviéramos un poco de carne! —exclamaban—. 5 Cómo nos acordamos del pescado que comíamos gratis en Egipto y teníamos todos los pepinos, los melones, los puerros, las cebollas y los ajos que queríamos. 6 ¡Pero ahora lo único que vemos es este maná! Hasta hemos perdido el apetito».

7 El maná era parecido a pequeñas semillas de cilantro, y era de un color amarillo claro como goma de resina. 8 La gente salía a recogerlo del suelo. Con el maná se hacía harina en los molinos de mano o se machacaba en un mortero. Luego se hervía en una olla para hacer panes planos que sabían a pastelitos horneados con aceite de oliva. 9 Durante la noche, el maná caía sobre el campamento juntamente con el rocío.

10 Entonces Moisés escuchó los lloriqueos de las familias a la entrada de sus carpas y el SEÑOR se enfureció. Moisés también estaba muy molesto,

11 y le dijo al SEÑOR:
—¿Por qué me tratas a mí, tu servidor, con tanta dureza? ¡Ten misericordia de mí! ¿Qué hice para merecer la carga de todo este pueblo? 12 ¿Acaso yo los engendré? ¿Los traje yo al mundo? ¿Por qué me dijiste que los llevara en mis brazos como una madre a un bebé de pecho? ¿Cómo puedo llevarlos a la tierra que juraste dar a sus antepasados? 13 ¿De dónde se supone que voy a conseguir carne para toda esta gente? No dejan de quejarse conmigo diciendo: “¡Danos carne para comer!”. 14 ¡Solo no puedo soportar a todo este pueblo! ¡La carga es demasiado pesada! 15 Si esta es la manera como piensas tratarme, sería mejor que me mataras. ¡Hazme ese favor y ahórrame esta miseria!

Moisés selecciona setenta líderes

16 Entonces el SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés:
—Reúne delante de mí a setenta hombres que sean reconocidos como ancianos y jefes de Israel. Llévalos al tabernáculot para que permanezcan junto a ti. 17 Yo descenderé y allí hablaré contigo. Tomaré del Espíritu que está sobre ti y lo pondré sobre ellos también. Llevarán la carga del pueblo junto contigo, y de esa manera no tendrás que soportarla tú solo.

18 »También dile al pueblo: “Purifíquense, porque mañana tendrán carne para comer. Ustedes gemían y el SEÑOR oyó sus quejidos: ‘¡Oh, un poco de carne! ¡Estábamos en mejores condiciones en Egipto!’. Ahora, el SEÑOR les dará carne y tendrán que comérsela. 19 Y no será sólo un día, ni dos, ni cinco, ni diez, ni aun veinte. 20 La comerán durante un mes entero, hasta que les produzca náuseas y estén hartos de tanta carne. Pues han rechazado al SEÑOR que está aquí entre ustedes y han lloriqueado diciendo: ‘¿Por qué dejamos Egipto?’”.

21 Entonces Moisés respondió al SEÑOR:
—¡Hay seiscientos mil soldados de infantería aquí conmigo y aun así dices: “Yo les daré carne durante un mes entero”! 22 Aunque matáramos a todos nuestros rebaños y manadas, ¿podría eso satisfacerlos? O si pescáramos todos los peces del mar, ¿alcanzaría?

23 Entonces el SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés:
—¿Acaso mi brazo ha perdido su poder? ¡Ahora verás si mi palabra se cumple o no!

24 Así que Moisés salió y comunicó al pueblo las palabras del SEÑOR. Juntó a los setenta ancianos y los colocó alrededor del tabernáculo.t 25 Después el SEÑOR descendió en la nube y le habló a Moisés. Entonces les dio a los setenta ancianos del mismo Espíritu que estaba sobre Moisés; y cuando el Espíritu se posó sobre ellos, los ancianos profetizaron; pero esto nunca volvió a suceder.

26 Sin embargo, dos hombres, Eldad y Medad, se habían quedado en el campamento. Ellos estaban incluidos en la lista de los ancianos, pero no se presentaron en el tabernáculo. Aun así, el Espíritu también se posó sobre ellos y profetizaron allí en el campamento. 27 Un joven corrió y le informó a Moisés: «¡Eldad y Medad están profetizando en el campamento!».

28 Entonces Josué, hijo de Nun, que era ayudante de Moisés desde su juventud, protestó:
—Moisés, mi señor, ¡detenlos!

29 Pero Moisés respondió:
—¿Estás celoso por mí? Ya quisiera que todos los del pueblo del SEÑOR fueran profetas y que el SEÑOR pusiera su Espíritu sobre todos.

30 Entonces Moisés regresó al campamento con los ancianos de Israel.

El SEÑOR envía codornices

31 Ahora bien, el SEÑOR envió un viento que trajo codornices desde el mar y las dejó caer por todo el campamento. Las codornices volaban por kilómetros en todas las direcciones a la altura de un metro sobre la superficie de la tierra.t 32 Así que el pueblo salió y atrapó codornices todo ese día, a lo largo de la noche y también todo el día siguiente. ¡Nadie recogió menos de dos mil kilos!t Entonces las pusieron a secar por todo el campamento. 33 Pero mientras se saciaban de carne —cuando aún estaba en sus bocas— el enojo del SEÑOR se encendió contra el pueblo y los castigó con una plaga muy grave. 34 Así que ese lugar fue llamado Kibrot-hataava (que significa «tumbas de glotonería») porque allí enterraron a la gente que codiciaba la carne de Egipto. 35 Después, los israelitas viajaron de Kibrot-hataava a Hazerot, donde se quedaron por algún tiempo.

NUMBERS 11

The Israelites Complain

1 One day the Israelites started complaining about their troubles. The [Lord] heard them and became so angry that he destroyed the outer edges of their camp with fire.
2 When the people begged Moses to help, he prayed, and the fire went out.

3 They named the place “Burning,”t because in his anger the [Lord] had set their camp on fire.

The People Grumble //about Being Hungry

6 But we're starving out here, and the only food we have is this manna.”
7  t The manna was like small whitish seeds

8-9 t and tasted like something baked with sweet olive oil. It appeared at night with the dew. In the morning the people would collect the manna, grind or crush it into flour, then boil it and make it into thin wafers.
10 The Israelites stood around their tents complaining. Moses heard them and was upset that they had made the [Lord] angry.

11 He prayed:
I am your servant, [Lord], so why are you doing this to me? What have I done to deserve this? You've made me responsible for all these people, 12 but they're not my children. You told me to nurse them along and to carry them to the land you promised their ancestors. 13 They keep whining for meat, but where can I get meat for them? 14 This job is too much for me. How can I take care of all these people by myself?

15 If this is the way you're going to treat me, just kill me now and end my miserable life!

Seventy Leaders Are Chosen //To Help Moses

16 The [Lord] said to Moses:
Choose 70 of Israel's respected leaders and go with them to the sacred tent.

17 While I am talking with you there, I will give them some of your authority, so they can share responsibility for my people. You will no longer have to care for them by yourself.
18 As for the Israelites, I have heard them complaining about not having meat and about being better off in Egypt. So tell them to make themselves acceptable to me, because tomorrow they will have meat.

19-20 In fact, they will have meat day after day for a whole month—not just a few days, or even 10 or 20. They turned against me and wanted to go back to Egypt. Now they will eat meat until they get sick of it.
21 Moses replied, “At least 600,000 grown men are here with me. How can you say there will be enough meat to feed them and their families for a whole month?

22 Even if we butchered all our sheep and cattle, or caught every fish in the sea, we wouldn't have enough to feed them.”

23 The [Lord] answered, “I can do anything! Watch and you'll see my words come true.”
24 Moses told the people what the [Lord] had said. Then he chose 70 respected leaders and went with them to the sacred tent. While the leaders stood in a circle around the tent, Moses went inside,

25 and the [Lord] spoke with him. Then the [Lord] took some authorityt from Moses and gave it to the 70 leaders. And when the [Lord]'s Spirit took control of them, they started shouting like prophets. But they did it only this one time.
26 Eldad and Medad were two leaders who had not gone to the tent. But when the Spirit took control of them, they began shouting like prophets right there in camp.

27 A boy ran to Moses and told him about Eldad and Medad.

28 Joshuat was there helping Moses, as he had done since he was young. And he said to Moses, “Sir, you must stop them!”
29 But Moses replied, “Are you concerned what this might do to me? I wish the [Lord] would give his Spirit to all his people so everyone could be a prophet.”

30 Then Moses and the 70 leaders went back to camp.

The [Lord] Sends Quails

33 But before the meat could be eaten, the [Lord] became angry and sent a deadly disease through the camp.

34 After they had buried the people who had been so greedy for meat, they called the place “Graves for the Greedy.”t
35 Israel then broke camp and traveled to Hazeroth.
