Los israelitas exploran Canaán

1 El Señor le dijo a Moisés: 2 «Quiero que envíes a algunos de tus hombres a explorar la tierra que estoy por entregar a los israelitas. De cada tribu enviarás a un líder que la represente.»
3 De acuerdo con la orden del Señor, Moisés los envió desde el desierto de Parán. Todos ellos eran jefes en Israel, 4 y éstos son sus nombres:
Samúa hijo de Zacur, de la tribu de Rubén; 5 Safat hijo de Horí, de la tribu de Simeón; 6 Caleb hijo de Jefone, de la tribu de Judá; 7 Igal hijo de José, de la tribu de Isacar; 8 Oseas hijo de Nun, de la tribu de Efraín; 9 Palti hijo de Rafú, de la tribu de Benjamín; 10 Gadiel hijo de Sodi, de la tribu de Zabulón; 11 Gadí hijo de Susi, de la tribu de Manasés (una de las tribus de José); 12 Amiel hijo de Guemalí, de la tribu de Dan; 13 Setur hijo de Micael, de la tribu de Aser; 14 Najbí hijo de Vapsi, de la tribu de Neftalí; 15 Geuel hijo de Maquí, de la tribu de Gad. 16 Éstos son los *nombres de los líderes que Moisés envió a explorar la tierra. (A Oseas hijo de Nun, Moisés le cambió el nombre y le puso Josué.)
17 Cuando Moisés los envió a explorar la tierra de Canaán, les dijo: «Suban por el Néguev, hasta llegar a la montaña. 18 Exploren el país, y fíjense cómo son sus habitantes, si son fuertes o débiles, muchos o pocos. 19 Averigüen si la tierra en que viven es buena o mala, y si sus ciudades son abiertas o amuralladas. 20 Examinen el terreno, y vean si es fértil o estéril, y si tiene árboles o no. ¡Adelante! Traigan algunos frutos del país.»
Ésa era la temporada en que maduran las primeras uvas. 21 Los doce hombres se fueron y exploraron la tierra, desde el desierto de Zin hasta Rejob, cerca de Lebó Jamat.s 22 Subieron por el Néguev y llegaron a Hebrón, donde vivían Ajimán, Sesay y Talmay, descendientes de Anac. (Hebrón había sido fundada siete años antes que la ciudad egipcia de Zoán.) 23 Cuando llegaron al valle del arroyo Escol,s cortaron un sarmiento que tenía un solo racimo de uvas, y entre dos lo llevaron colgado de una vara. También cortaron granadas e higos. 24 Por el racimo que estos israelitas cortaron, a ese lugar se le llamó Valle de Escol.

Informe de los exploradores

25 Al cabo de cuarenta días los doce hombres regresaron de explorar aquella tierra. 26 Volvieron a Cades, en el desierto de Parán, que era donde estaban Moisés, Aarón y toda la comunidad israelita, y les presentaron a todos ellos un informe, y les mostraron los frutos de esa tierra. 27 Éste fue el informe:
—Fuimos al país al que nos enviaste, ¡y por cierto que allí abundan la leche y la miel! Aquí pueden ver sus frutos. 28 Pero el pueblo que allí habita es poderoso, y sus ciudades son enormes y están fortificadas. Hasta vimos *anaquitas allí. 29 Los amalecitas habitan el Néguev; los hititas, jebuseos y amorreos viven en la montaña, y los cananeos ocupan la zona costera y la ribera del río Jordán.
30 Caleb hizo callar al pueblo ante Moisés, y dijo:
—Subamos a conquistar esa tierra. Estoy seguro de que podremos hacerlo. 31 Pero los que habían ido con él respondieron:
—No podremos combatir contra esa gente. ¡Son más fuertes que nosotros! 32 Y comenzaron a esparcir entre los israelitas falsos rumores acerca de la tierra que habían explorado. Decían:
—La tierra que hemos explorado se traga a sus habitantes, y los hombres que allí vimos son enormes. 33 ¡Hasta vimos *anaquitas! Comparados con ellos, parecíamos langostas, y así nos veían ellos a nosotros.

Twelve Men Are Sent //into Canaan

(Deuteronomy 1.19-33)

1 The [Lord] said to Moses,

2 “Choose a leader from each tribe and send them into Canaan to explore the land I am giving you.”
3 So Moses sent twelve tribal leaders from Israel's camp in the Paran Desert

4-16 with orders to explore the land of Canaan. And here are their names:
Shammua son of Zaccur
from Reuben,
Shaphat son of Hori
from Simeon,
Caleb son of Jephunneh
from Judah,
Igal son of Joseph
from Issachar,
Joshua son of Nun
from Ephraim, t
Palti son of Raphu
from Benjamin,
Gaddiel son of Sodi
from Zebulun,
Gaddi son of Susi
from Manasseh,
Ammiel son of Gemalli
from Dan,
Sethur son of Michael
from Asher,
Nahbi son of Vophsi
from Naphtali,
and Geuel son of Machi
from Gad.

17 Before Moses sent them into Canaan, he said:
After you go through the Southern Desert of Canaan, continue north into the hill country 18 and find out what those regions are like. Be sure to remember how many people live there, how strong they are,

19-20 and if they live in open towns or walled cities. See if the land is good for growing crops and find out what kinds of trees grow there. It's time for grapes to ripen, so try to bring back some of the fruit that grows there.
21 The twelve men left to explore Canaan from the Zin Desert in the south all the way to the town of Rehob near Lebo-Hamath in the north. 22 As they went through the Southern Desert, they came to the town of Hebron, which was seven years older than the Egyptian town of Zoan. In Hebron, they saw the three Anakimt clans of Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai.

23-24 When they got to Bunch Valley, t they cut off a branch with such a huge bunch of grapes, that it took two men to carry it on a pole. That's why the place was called Bunch Valley. Along with the grapes, they also took back pomegranatest and figs.

The Men Report Back //to the People

27 and said:
Look at this fruit! The land we explored is rich with milk and honey. 28 But the people who live there are strong, and their cities are large and walled. We even saw the three Anakimt clans.

29 Besides that, the Amalekites live in the Southern Desert; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites are in the hill country; and the Canaanitest live along the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.

30 Caleb calmed down the crowd and said, “Let's go and take the land. I know we can do it!”
31 But the other men replied, “Those people are much too strong for us.” 32 Then they started spreading rumors and saying, “We won't be able to grow anything in that soil. And the people are like giants. 33 t In fact, we saw the Nephilim who are the ancestors of the Anakim. They were so big that we felt as small as grasshoppers.”
