Rebelión de Coré

1  Cierto día, Coré, hijo de Izhar, quien era descendiente de Coat, hijo de Leví, conspiró con Datán y Abiram, hijos de Eliab, junto con On, hijo de Pelet de la tribu de Rubén. 2 Ellos provocaron una rebelión contra Moisés junto con otros doscientos cincuenta jefes de la comunidad, quienes eran miembros prominentes de la asamblea.

3 Todos se unieron contra Moisés y Aarón y les dijeron:
—¡Ustedes han ido demasiado lejos! El SEÑOR santificó a la comunidad entera de Israel y él está con todos nosotros. ¿Qué derecho tienen ustedes para actuar como si fueran superiores al resto del pueblo del SEÑOR?

4 Cuando Moisés oyó lo que decían, cayó rostro en tierra.

5 Entonces les dijo a Coré y a sus seguidores:
—Mañana por la mañana el SEÑOR nos mostrará quién le pertenece a élt y quién es santo. El SEÑOR permitirá la entrada a su presencia sólo a quienes él elija. 6 Coré, tú y tus seguidores preparen sus recipientes para quemar incienso. 7 Mañana enciendan fuego en ellos y quemen incienso ante el SEÑOR. Entonces veremos a quién elige el SEÑOR como su santo. ¡Ustedes, levitas, son los que han ido demasiado lejos!

8 Moisés le habló de nuevo a Coré: «¡Ahora escuchen, levitas! 9 ¿Les parece de poca importancia que el Dios de Israel los escogiera de entre toda la comunidad para estar cerca de él de manera que sirvan en el tabernáculo del SEÑOR y que estén delante de los israelitas para ministrarles? 10 Coré, él ya les dio este ministerio especial a ti y a tus hermanos levitas. ¿Ahora también reclaman el sacerdocio? 11 ¡En realidad es contra el SEÑOR que tú y tus seguidores se rebelan! Pues, ¿quién es Aarón para que se quejen de él?».

12 Luego Moisés mandó llamar a Datán y a Abiram, los hijos de Eliab, pero ellos respondieron: «¡Rehusamos presentarnos ante ti! 13 ¿No te basta que nos sacaste de Egipto, una tierra donde fluyen la leche y la miel, para matarnos aquí en este desierto, y que además ahora nos trates como a tus súbditos? 14 Es más, no nos has llevado a una tierra donde fluyen la leche y la miel. Ni nos has dado una nueva patria con campos y viñedos. ¿Intentas engañar a estos hombres?t ¡Nosotros no iremos!».

15 Entonces Moisés se enojó mucho y le dijo al SEÑOR: «¡No aceptes sus ofrendas de grano! Yo no les he quitado ni siquiera un burro, ni jamás he lastimado a ninguno de ellos». 16 Y Moisés le dijo a Coré: «Tú y tus seguidores deberán venir aquí mañana y presentarse ante el SEÑOR. Aarón también estará presente. 17 Tú y cada uno de tus doscientos cincuenta seguidores deberán preparar un incensario y ponerle incienso para que todos puedan presentarlos ante el SEÑOR. Aarón también llevará el suyo».

18 Así que cada hombre preparó un recipiente para quemar incienso, lo encendió y le puso incienso. Después se presentaron a la entrada del tabernáculot con Moisés y Aarón. 19 Mientras tanto, Coré había incitado a toda la comunidad contra Moisés y Aarón, y todos se reunieron a la entrada del tabernáculo. Entonces la gloriosa presencia del SEÑOR se apareció ante toda la comunidad. 20 Y el SEÑOR les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón:

21 —¡Aléjense de todas estas personas para que pueda destruirlas en el acto!

22 Pero Moisés y Aarón cayeron rostro en tierra y rogaron:
—¡Oh Dios, tú eres el Dios que da aliento a todas las criaturas! ¿Tienes que enojarte con todo el pueblo cuando sólo un hombre peca?

23 Y el SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés:

24 —Entonces dile a todo el pueblo que se aleje de las carpas de campaña de Coré, Datán y Abiram.

25 Así que Moisés se levantó y fue a toda prisa hasta las carpas de Datán y Abiram, seguido por los ancianos de Israel. 26 «¡Rápido! —le dijo a la gente—, aléjense de las carpas de estos hombres perversos y no toquen ninguna de sus pertenencias. De lo contrario, serán destruidos por el pecado de ellos». 27 Entonces todo el pueblo se alejó de las carpas de Coré, Datán y Abiram. Pero Datán y Abiram salieron y esperaron de pie a la entrada de sus carpas, junto con sus esposas, sus hijos y sus pequeños.

28 Y Moisés les dijo: «Esta es la manera en que sabrán que el SEÑOR me ha enviado a realizar todas estas cosas, pues no las he hecho por mi propia cuenta. 29 Si estos hombres mueren de muerte natural o si nada fuera de lo común les sucede, entonces el SEÑOR no me ha enviado; 30 pero si el SEÑOR hace algo totalmente nuevo y la tierra abre su boca y se los traga con todas sus pertenencias y descienden vivos a la tumba,t entonces ustedes sabrán que estos hombres mostraron desprecio por el SEÑOR».

31 Apenas Moisés terminó de decir estas palabras, la tierra repentinamente se abrió debajo de ellos. 32 La tierra abrió la boca y se tragó a los hombres, junto con todos los de su casa y todos sus seguidores que estaban junto a ellos y todo lo que poseían. 33 Así que descendieron vivos a la tumba, junto con todas sus pertenencias. La tierra se cerró encima de ellos y desaparecieron de entre el pueblo de Israel; 34 y toda la gente que los rodeaba huyó cuando oyeron sus gritos. «¡La tierra nos tragará a nosotros también!», exclamaron. 35 Entonces un fuego ardiente salió del SEÑOR y consumió a los doscientos cincuenta hombres que ofrecían incienso.

36 tEl SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés: 37 «Dile a Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, que saque todos los incensarios del fuego, porque son santos. También dile que esparza los carbones encendidos. 38 Toma los incensarios de estos hombres que pecaron a costa de sus vidas, y de ese metal elabora láminas a martillo para recubrir el altar. Como estos incensarios se usaron en la presencia del SEÑOR, ya son santos. Que sirvan como advertencia al pueblo de Israel».

39 Así que Eleazar, el sacerdote, recuperó los doscientos cincuenta incensarios de bronce usados por los hombres que murieron en el fuego y de ellos elaboró una lámina a martillo para recubrir el altar. 40 Esta lámina serviría de advertencia a los israelitas para que nadie que no fuera autorizado —nadie que no fuera descendiente de Aarón— entrara jamás a la presencia del SEÑOR para quemar incienso. Si alguien lo hiciera, le sucedería lo mismo que a Coré y a sus seguidores. Entonces cumplieron las instrucciones que el SEÑOR le dio a Moisés.

41 Sin embargo, tan pronto como la mañana siguiente, toda la comunidad de Israel comenzó de nuevo a murmurar contra Moisés y Aarón diciendo: «¡Ustedes mataron al pueblo del SEÑOR!». 42 Cuando la comunidad se congregaba para protestar contra Moisés y Aarón, la gente se dio vuelta hacia el tabernáculo y vio que la nube lo había cubierto y que había aparecido la gloriosa presencia del SEÑOR.

43 Entonces Moisés y Aarón fueron al frente del tabernáculo, 44 y el SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés: 45 «¡Aléjate de toda esta gente para que la destruya inmediatamente!». Pero Moisés y Aarón cayeron rostro en tierra.

46 Y Moisés le dijo a Aarón: «Rápido, toma un recipiente para quemar incienso y ponle carbones encendidos del altar. Agrégale incienso y llévalo entre el pueblo para purificarlos y hacerlos justos ante el SEÑOR.t El enojo del SEÑOR ya arde contra ellos y la plaga ha comenzado».

47 Entonces Aarón hizo como Moisés le dijo y corrió entre el pueblo. La plaga ya había comenzado a matar a la gente, pero Aarón quemó el incienso y purificót al pueblo. 48 Se puso entre los vivos y los muertos y se detuvo la plaga. 49 Aun así, 14.700 personas murieron por esa plaga, además de los que habían muerto por la rebelión de Coré. 50 Entonces, debido a que la plaga se detuvo, Aarón regresó donde estaba Moisés a la entrada del tabernáculo.

Korah, Dathan, and Abiram //Lead a Rebellion

1-2  t t Korah son of Izhar was a Levite from the Kohathite clan. One day he called together Dathan, Abiram, and Ont from the Reuben tribe, and the four of them decided to rebel against Moses. So they asked 250 respected Israelite leaders for their support, and together they went to Moses

3 and Aaron and said, “Why do you think you're so much better than everyone else? We're part of the [Lord]'s holy people, and he's with all of us. What makes you think you're the only ones in charge?”
4 When Moses heard this, he knelt down to pray.t

5 Then he said to Korah and his followers:
Tomorrow morning the [Lord] will show us the person he has chosen to be his priest, and that man will faithfully serve him.

6-7 Korah, here is what you and your followers must do: Get some fire pans, fill them with coals and incense, and place them near the sacred tent. And the man the [Lord] chooses will be his priest.t Korah, this time you Levites have gone too far!
8-9 You know that the God of Israel has chosen you Levites from all Israel to serve him by being in charge of the sacred tent and by helping the community to worship in the proper way. What more do you want? 10 The [Lord] has given you a special responsibility, and now, Korah, you think you should also be his priest.

11 You and your followers have rebelled against the [Lord], not against Aaron.
12 Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, but they sent back this message: “We won't come! 13 It's bad enough that you took us from our rich farmland in Egypt to let us die here in the desert. Now you also want to boss us around!

14 You keep promising us rich farmlands with fertile fields and vineyards—but where are they? Stop trying to trick these people. No, we won't come to see you.”

15 Moses was very angry and said to the [Lord], “Don't listen to these men! I haven't done anything wrong to them. I haven't taken as much as a donkey.”
16 Then he said to Korah, “Tomorrow you and your followers must go with Aaron to the [Lord]'s sacred tent.

17 Each of you take along your fire pan with incense in it and offer the incense to the [Lord].”
18 The next day the men placed incense and coals in their fire pans and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the sacred tent.

19 Meanwhile, Korah had convinced the rest of the Israelites to rebel against their two leaders.
When that happened, the [Lord] appeared in all his glory 20 and said to Moses and Aaron,

21 “Get away from the rest of the Israelites so I can kill them at once!”

22 But the two men bowed down and prayed, “Our God, you gave these people life. Why would you punish everyone here when only one man has sinned?”
23 The [Lord] answered Moses,

24 “Tell the people to stay away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”
25 Moses walked over to Dathan and Abiram, and the other leaders of Israel followed. 26 Then Moses warned the people, “Get away from the tents of these sinful men! Don't touch anything that belongs to them or you'll be wiped out.”

27 So everyone moved away from those tents, except Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and their families.
28 Moses said to the crowd, “The [Lord] has chosen me and told me to do these things—it wasn't my idea. And here's how you will know: 29 If these men die a natural death, it means the [Lord] hasn't chosen me.

30 But suppose the [Lord] does something that has never been done before. For example, what if a huge crack appears in the ground, and these men and their families fall into it and are buried alive, together with everything they own? Then you will know they have turned their backs on the [Lord]!”
31 As soon as Moses said this, the ground under the men opened up

32-33 and swallowed them alive, together with their families and everything they owned. Then the ground closed back up, and they were gone.

34 The rest of the Israelites heard their screams, so they ran off, shouting, “We don't want that to happen to us!”

35 Suddenly the [Lord] sent a fire that burned up the 250 men who had offered incense to him.
36 Then the [Lord] said to Moses, 37 “Tell Aaron's son Eleazar to take the fire pans from the smoldering fire and scatter the coals. The pans are now sacred,

38 because they were used for offering incense to me. Have them hammered into a thin layer of bronze as a covering for the altar. Those men died because of their sin, and now their fire pans will become a warning for the rest of the community.”
39 Eleazar collected the pans and had them hammered into a thin layer of bronze as a covering for the altar,

40 just as the [Lord] had told Moses. The pans were a warning to the Israelites that only Aaron's descendants would be allowed to offer incense to the [Lord]. Anyone else who tried to would be punished like Korah and his followers.

The Israelites Rebel //and Are Punished

41 The next day the people of Israel again complained against Moses and Aaron, “The two of you killed some of the [Lord]'s people!”
42 As the people crowded around them, Moses and Aaron turned toward the sacred tent, and the [Lord] appeared in his glory in the cloud covering the tent. 43 So Moses and Aaron walked to the front of the tent, 44 t where the [Lord] said to them,

45 “Stand back! I am going to wipe out these Israelites once and for all.”
They immediately bowed down and prayed.

46 Then Moses told Aaron, “Grab your fire pan and fill it with hot coals from the altar. Put incense in it, then quickly take it to where the people are and offer it to the [Lord], so they can be forgiven. The [Lord] is very angry, and people have already started dying!”
47-48 Aaron did exactly what he had been told. He ran over to the crowd of people and stood between the dead bodies and the people who were still alive. He placed the incense on the pan, then offered it to the [Lord] and asked him to forgive the people's sin. The disease immediately stopped spreading, and no one else died from it.

49 But 14,700 Israelites were dead, not counting those who had died with Korah and his followers.
50 Aaron walked back and stood with Moses at the sacred tent.
