Números 20

Moisés golpea la roca

1  El primer mes del año,t toda la comunidad de Israel llegó al desierto de Zin y acampó en Cades. Mientras estaban allí, Miriam murió y la enterraron.

2 Ya que en ese lugar no había agua para que el pueblo bebiera, la gente se rebeló contra Moisés y Aarón. 3 El pueblo culpó a Moisés y dijo: «¡Si tan sólo hubiéramos muerto con nuestros hermanos delante del SEÑOR! 4 ¿Por qué trajiste a la congregación del pueblo del SEÑOR a este desierto para morir, junto con todos nuestros animales? 5 ¿Por qué nos obligaste a salir de Egipto y nos trajiste a este terrible lugar? ¡Esta tierra no tiene grano ni higos ni uvas ni granadas ni agua para beber!».

6 Entonces Moisés y Aarón se apartaron del pueblo y fueron a la entrada del tabernáculo,t donde cayeron rostro en tierra. Allí la presencia gloriosa del SEÑOR se les apareció, 7 y el SEÑOR le dijo a Moisés: 8 «Tú y Aarón tomen la vara y reúnan a toda la comunidad. En presencia de todo el pueblo, háblale a la roca y de ella brotará agua. De la roca proveerás suficiente agua para satisfacer a toda la comunidad y a sus animales».

9 Así que Moisés hizo lo que se le dijo. Tomó la vara del lugar donde se guardaba en la presencia del SEÑOR. 10 Luego él y Aarón mandaron a llamar al pueblo a reunirse frente a la roca. «¡Escuchen, ustedes rebeldes! —gritó—. ¿Acaso debemos sacarles agua de esta roca?». 11 Enseguida Moisés levantó su mano y golpeó la roca dos veces con la vara y el agua brotó a chorros. Así que toda la comunidad y sus animales bebieron hasta saciarse.

12 Sin embargo, el SEÑOR les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: «¡Puesto que no confiaron lo suficiente en mí para demostrar mi santidad a los israelitas, ustedes no los llevarán a la tierra que les doy!». 13 Por eso este lugar se conoce como las aguas de Meriba (que significa «discusión») porque allí el pueblo de Israel discutió con el SEÑOR y él demostró su santidad entre ellos.

Edom le niega el paso a Israel

14 Mientras Moisés estaba en Cades, envió embajadores al rey de Edom con el siguiente mensaje:
«Esto es lo que dicen tus parientes, los israelitas: tú sabes todas las dificultades por las que hemos pasado. 15 Nuestros antepasados bajaron a Egipto y allí vivimos un largo tiempo. Los egipcios nos maltrataron brutalmente, tanto a nosotros como a nuestros antepasados; 16 pero cuando clamamos al SEÑOR, él nos oyó y envió a un ángel que nos sacó de Egipto. Ahora estamos acampando en Cades, la ciudad en la frontera de tu territorio. 17 Por favor, permítenos atravesar tu territorio. Tendremos cuidado de no pasar por tus campos y viñedos, ni siquiera beberemos el agua de tus pozos. Seguiremos derecho por el camino real, sin desviarnos hasta que hayamos atravesado tu territorio».

18 Sin embargo, el rey de Edom dijo: «¡Quédense fuera de mi territorio o saldré a su encuentro con mi ejército!».

19 Entonces los israelitas le contestaron: «Nos mantendremos en el camino principal. Si nuestros animales beben de tu agua, te la pagaremos. Sólo permítenos atravesar tu territorio; es todo lo que pedimos».

20 Aun así, el rey de Edom respondió: «¡Quédense fuera! Ustedes no pueden pasar por nuestra tierra». Dicho esto movilizó su ejército y salió contra ellos con una fuerza imponente. 21 Y como Edom no le permitió a los israelitas atravesar su país, se vieron obligados a regresar.

Muerte de Aarón

22 Toda la comunidad israelita partió de Cades y llegó al monte Hor. 23 Allí, en la frontera de la tierra de Edom, el SEÑOR les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: 24 «Ha llegado el momento en que Aarón se reúna con sus antepasados al morir. Él no entrará a la tierra que le daré al pueblo de Israel, porque ustedes dos se rebelaron contra mis instrucciones con respecto al agua en Meriba. 25 Lleva a Aarón y a su hijo Eleazar y suban al monte Hor. 26 Ahí le quitarás las vestiduras sacerdotales a Aarón y se las pondrás a su hijo Eleazar. Aarón morirá allí y se reunirá con sus antepasados».

27 Así que Moisés hizo lo que el SEÑOR le ordenó. Los tres subieron juntos al monte Hor, mientras toda la comunidad observaba. 28 En la cumbre, Moisés le quitó las vestiduras sacerdotales a Aarón y se las puso a Eleazar, hijo de Aarón. Entonces Aarón murió en la cima de la montaña y Moisés y Eleazar descendieron. 29 Cuando el pueblo se dio cuenta de que Aarón había muerto, todo Israel lo lloró por treinta días.

NUMBERS 20

Water from a Rock

1 The people of Israel arrived at the Zin Desert during the first montht and set up camp near the town of Kadesh. It was there that Miriam died and was buried.
2  t The Israelites had no water, so they went to Moses and Aaron 3 and complained, “Moses, we'd be better off if we had died along with the others in front of the [Lord]'s sacred tent.t 4 You brought us into this desert, and now we and our livestock are going to die!

5 Egypt was better than this horrible place. At least there we had grain and figs and grapevines and pomegranates.t But now we don't even have any water.”
6 Moses and Aaron went to the entrance to the sacred tent, where they bowed down. The [Lord] appeared to them in all of his glory

7-8 and said, “Moses, get your walking stick.t Then you and Aaron call the people together and command that rock to give you water. That's how you will provide water for the people of Israel and their livestock.”
9 Moses obeyed and took his stick from the sacred tent. 10 After he and Aaron had gathered the people around the rock, he said, “Look, you rebellious people, and you will see water flow from this rock!”

11 t He raised his stick in the air and struck the rock two times. At once, water gushed from the rock, and the people and their livestock had water to drink.

12 But the [Lord] said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you refused to believe in my power, these people did not respect me. And so, you will not be the ones to lead them into the land I have promised.”

13 The Israelites had complained against the [Lord], and he had shown them his holy power by giving them water to drink. So they named the place Meribah, which means “Complaining.”

Israel Isn't Allowed //To Go through Edom

14 Moses sent messengers from Israel's camp near Kadesh with this message for the king of Edom:
We are Israelites, your own relatives, and we're sure you have heard the terrible things that have happened to us. 15 Our ancestors settled in Egypt and lived there a long time. But later the Egyptians were cruel to us,

16 and when we begged our [Lord] for help, he answered our prayer and brought us out of that land.
Now we are camped at the border of your territory, near the town of Kadesh.

17 Please let us go through your country. We won't go near your fields or vineyards, and we won't drink any water from your wells. We will stay on the main roadt until we leave your territory.

18 But the king of Edom answered, “No, I won't let you go through our country! And if you try, we will attack you.”

19 Moses sent back this message: “We promise to stay on the main road, and if any of us or our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. We just want to pass through.”

20 But the king insisted, “You can't go through our land!”
Then Edom sent out its strongest troops

21 to keep Israel from passing through its territory. So the Israelites had to go in another direction.

Aaron Dies

26 Then take Aaron's priestly robe from him and place it on Eleazar. Aaron will die there.”
27 Moses obeyed, and everyone watched as he and Aaron and Eleazar walked to the top of Mount Hor.

28 t Moses then took the priestly robe from Aaron and placed it on Eleazar. Aaron died there.
When Moses and Eleazar came down, 29 the people knew that Aaron had died, and they mourned his death for 30 days.
