Numbers 27

1 Then drew near the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.2 And they stood before Moses, and before Eleazar the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, at the door of the tent of meeting, saying,3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the company of them that gathered themselves together against Jehovah in the company of Korah: but he died in his own sin; and he had no sons.4 Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give unto us a possession among the brethren of our father.5 And Moses brought their cause before Jehovah.

6 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.8 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.9 And if he have no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.10 And if he have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father’s brethren.11 And if his father have no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: and it shall be unto the children of Israel a statute and ordinance, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

12 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Get thee up into this mountain of Abarim, and behold the land which I have given unto the children of Israel.13 And when thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy people, as Aaron thy brother was gathered;14 because ye rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the waters before their eyes. (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)15 And Moses spake unto Jehovah, saying,16 Let Jehovah, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,17 who may go out before them, and who may come in before them, and who may lead them out, and who may bring them in; that the congregation of Jehovah be not as sheep which have no shepherd.18 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay thy hand upon him;19 and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.20 And thou shalt put of thine honor upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may obey.21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Jehovah: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.22 And Moses did as Jehovah commanded him; and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation:23 and he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as Jehovah spake by Moses.

Numbers 27

Special Inheritance Laws

1 s Then the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh of the families of Manasseh,s the son Joseph came forward. Now these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.2 And they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest and the leaders of the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said,3 “Our father died in the wilderness, althought he was not part oft the company of those that gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah; but he died for his own sin,t and he had no sons.

4 Why should the name of our father be lost from among his family because he had no son? Give us a possessiont among the relativest of our father.”
5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord.6 The Lord said to Moses:7 “The daughters of Zelophehad have a valid claim.t You must indeedt give them possession of an inheritance among their father’s relatives, and you must transfert the inheritance of their father to them.8 And you must tell the Israelites, ‘If a man diest and has no son, then you must transfer his inheritance to his daughter;9 and if he has no daughter, then you are to give his inheritance to his brothers;10 and if he has no brothers, then you are to give his inheritance to his father’s brothers;

11 and if his father has no brothers, then you are to give his inheritance to his relative nearest to him from his family, and he will possess it. This will be for the Israelites a legal requirement,t as the Lord commanded Moses.’”

Leadership Change

12 s Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain of the Abarim range,ss and seet the land I have givent to the Israelites.13 When you have seen it, you will be gatheredt to your ancestors,t as Aaron your brother was gathered to his ancestors.t

14 Fort in the wilderness of Zin when the community rebelled against me, yout rebelled against my commandt to show me as holys before their eyes over the water – the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.”
15 Then Moses spoke to the Lord:16 “Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all humankind,t appointt a man over the community,

17 who will go out before them, and who will come in before them,s and who will lead them out, and who will bring them in, so thatt the community of the Lord may not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”
18 The Lord repliedt to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is such a spirit,s and lay your hand on him;s19 set himt before Eleazar the priest and before the whole community, and commissiont him publicly.t20 Then you must delegatet some of your authoritys to him, so that the whole community of the Israelites will be obedient.t

21 And he will stand before Eleazar the priest, whot will seek counselt for him before the Lord by the decision of the Urim.s At his commandt they will go out, and at his command they will come in, he and all the Israelites with him, the whole community.”
22 So Moses did as the Lord commanded him; he took Joshua and sett him before Eleazar the priest and before the whole community.

23 He laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the Lord commanded,t by the authorityt of Moses.
