Abdías 1

1 Visión de Abdías.
Hemos oído una noticia de parte del Señor y un mensajero ha sido enviado a las naciones, diciendo: «¡Vamos, marchemos a la guerra contra ella!»
Así dice el Señor omnipotente acerca de Edom:

Orgullo y caída de Edom

2 «¡Te haré insignificante entre las naciones,
serás tremendamente despreciado! 3 Tu carácter soberbio te ha engañado.
Como habitas en las hendiduras de los desfiladeros, en la altura de tu morada, te dices a ti mismo: ¿Quién podrá arrojarme a tierra? 4 Pero aunque vueles a lo alto como águila,
y tu nido esté puesto en las estrellas, de allí te arrojaré —afirma el Señor—. 5 Si vinieran a ti ladrones
o saqueadores nocturnos, ¿no robarían sólo lo que les bastara? ¡Pero tú, cómo serás destruido! Si vinieran a ti vendimiadores, ¿no dejarían algunos racimos? 6 ¡Pero cómo registrarán a Esaú!
¡Cómo rebuscarán sus escondrijos! 7 Hasta la frontera te expulsarán
tus propios aliados, te engañarán y dominarán tus propios amigos. Los que se sientan a tu mesa te pondrán una trampa. ¡Es que Edom ya no tiene inteligencia! 8 ¿Acaso no destruiré yo en aquel día
a los sabios de Edom, a la inteligencia del monte de Esaú? —afirma el Señor—. 9 Ciudad de Temán, tus guerreros se caerán de miedo,
a fin de que todo hombre sea exterminado del monte de Esaú por la masacre. 10 »Por la violencia hecha contra tu hermano Jacob,
te cubrirá la vergüenza y serás exterminado para siempre. 11 En el día que te mantuviste aparte,
en el día que extranjeros llevaron su ejército cautivo, cuando extraños entraron por su puerta y sobre Jerusalén echaron suerte, tú eras como uno de ellos. 12 No debiste reírte de tu hermano en su mal día,
en el día de su desgracia. No debiste alegrarte a costa del pueblo de Judá en el día de su ruina. No debiste proferir arrogancia en el día de su angustia. 13 No debiste entrar por la *puerta de mi pueblo
en el día de su calamidad. No debiste recrear la vista con su desgracia en el día de su calamidad. No debiste echar mano a sus riquezas en el día de su calamidad. 14 No debiste aguardar en los angostos caminos
para matar a los que huían. No debiste entregar a los sobrevivientes en el día de su angustia. 15 »Porque cercano está el día del Señor
contra todas las naciones. ¡Edom, como hiciste, se te hará! ¡sobre tu cabeza recaerá tu merecido! 16 Pues sin duda que así como ustedes, israelitas,
bebieron de mi copa en mi santo monte, así también la beberán sin cesar todas las naciones; beberán y engullirán, y entonces serán como si nunca hubieran existido. 17 Pero en el monte *Sión habrá liberación, y será sagrado.
El pueblo de Jacob recuperará sus posesiones. 18 Los descendientes de Jacob serán fuego,
y los de José, llama; pero la casa real de Esaú será estopa: le pondrán fuego y la consumirán, de tal forma que no quedará sobreviviente entre los descendientes de Esaú.» El Señor lo ha dicho.

Restauración del pueblo de Dios

19 Los del Néguev poseerán el monte de Esaú, y los de la Sefelá poseerán Filistea. Los israelitas poseerán los campos de Efraín y de Samaria, y los de Benjamín poseerán Galaad.
20 Los exiliados, este ejército de israelitas que viven entre los cananeos, poseerán la tierra hasta Sarepta. Los desterrados de Jerusalén, que viven en Sefarad, poseerán las ciudades del Néguev, 21 y los libertadores subirán al monte Sión para gobernar la región montañosa de Esaú. Y el reino será del Señor.

OBADIAH 1

Edom's Pride //and Punishment

1  t The [Lord] God gave Obadiah
a messaget about Edom,
and this is what we heard:
“I, the [Lord], have sent
a messenger
with orders for the nations
to attack Edom.”

2 The [Lord] said to Edom:
I will make you the weakest
and most despised nation.

3 You live in a mountain fortress, t
because your pride
makes you feel safe from attack,
but you are mistaken.

4 I will still bring you down,
even if you fly higher
than an eagle
or nest among the stars.
I, the [Lord], have spoken!

5 If thieves break in at night,
they steal
only what they want.
And people who harvest grapes
always leave some unpicked.
But, Edom, you are doomed!

6 Everything you treasure most
will be taken from you.

7 Your allies can't be trusted.
They will force you out
of your own country.
And your best friends
will trick and trap you,
even before you know it.

8 Edom, when this happens,
I, the [Lord], will destroy
all your marvelous wisdom.

9 Warriors from the city of Temant
will be terrified,
and you descendants of Esaut
will be wiped out.

The [Lord] Condemns //Edom's Cruelty

10 You were cruel to your relatives,
the descendants of Jacob.t
Now you will be destroyed,
disgraced forever.

11 You stood there and watched
as foreigners entered Jerusalem
and took what they wanted.
In fact, you were no better
than those foreigners.

12 Why did you celebrate
when such a dreadful disaster
struck your relatives?
Why were you so pleased
when everyone in Judah
was suffering?

13 They are my people,
and you were cruel to them.
You went through their towns,
sneering and stealing
whatever was left.

14 In their time of torment,
you ambushed refugees
and handed them over
to their attackers.

The [Lord] Will Judge //the Nations

15 The day is coming
when I, the [Lord],
will judge the nations.
And, Edom, you will pay in full
for what you have done.

16 I forced the people of Judaht
to drink the wine of my anger
on my sacred mountain.
Soon the neighboring nations
must drink their fill—
then vanish without a trace.

Victory for Israel

17 The [Lord]'s people who escape
will go to Mount Zion,
and it will be holy.
Then Jacob's descendants
will capture the land of those
who took their land.

18 Israelt will be a fire,
and Edom will be straw
going up in flames.
The [Lord] has spoken!

19 The people of Israel
who live in the Southern Desert
will take the land of Edom.
Those who live in the hills
will capture Philistia,
Ephraim, and Samaria.
And the tribe of Benjamin
will conquer Gilead.

20 Those who return from captivity
will control Phoenicia
as far as Zarephath.t
Captives from Jerusalem
who were taken to Sepharadt
will capture the towns
of the Southern Desert.

21 Those the [Lord] has saved
will live on Mount Zion
and rule over Edom.t
Then the kingdom will belong
to the [Lord].
