Filippesi 1

1 Fondata da Paolo durante il suo secondo viaggio missionario, la chiesa macedone di Filippi aveva inviato un dono all'apostolo Paolo mentre egli si trovava in prigione a Efeso (55 d.C.?) o a Roma (60-62 d.C.). Paolo dunque scrisse la Lettera ai Filippesi principalmente per ringraziarli. Si tratta di una lettera molto personale e paradossalmente, date le circostanze, caratterizzata dalla gioia.
Paolo e Timoteo, servi di Cristo Gesù, a tutti i santi tin Cristo Gesù che sono in Filippi, con i vescovi e con i diaconi:

2 grazia a voi e pace da Dio nostro Padre e dal Signore Gesù Cristo.

Affetto di Paolo per i Filippesi

3 Io ringrazio il mio Dio di tutto il ricordo che ho di voi;4 e sempre, in ogni mia preghiera per tutti voi, prego con gioia5 amotivo della vostra partecipazione al vangelo, dal primo giorno fino ad ora.6 E ho questa fiducia: che colui che ha cominciato in voi un'opera buona la condurrà a compimento fino al giorno di Cristo Gesù.7 Ed è giusto che io senta così di tutti voi, perché io vi ho nel cuore, voi tutti che, tanto nelle mie catene tquanto nella difesa e nella conferma del vangelo, siete partecipi con me della grazia.8 Infatti Dio mi è testimone come io vi ami tutti con affetto profondo in Cristo Gesù.9 E prego che il vostro amore abbondi sempre più in conoscenza e in ogni discernimento,10 perché possiate apprezzare le cose migliori, affinché siate limpidi e irreprensibili per il giorno di Cristo,

11 ricolmi di frutti di giustizia che si hanno per mezzo di Gesù Cristo, a gloria e lode di Dio.

La prigionia di Paolo contribuisce alla causa del vangelo

12 Desidero che voi sappiate, fratelli, che quanto mi è accaduto ha piuttosto contribuito al progresso del vangelo;13 al punto che a tutti quelli del pretorio te a tutti gli altri è divenuto noto che sono in catene per Cristo;

14 e la maggioranza dei fratelli nel Signore, incoraggiati dalle mie catene, hanno avuto più ardire nell'annunciare senza paura la parola di Dio.
15 Vero è che alcuni predicano Cristo anche per invidia e per rivalità; ma ce ne sono anche altri che lo predicano di buon animo.16 Questi lo fanno per amore, sapendo che sono incaricato della difesa del vangelo;17 ma quelli annunciano Cristo con spirito di rivalità, non sinceramente, pensando di provocarmi qualche afflizione nelle mie catene.18 Che importa? Comunque sia, con ipocrisia o con sincerità, Cristo è annunciato; di questo mi rallegro, e mi rallegrerò ancora;19 so infatti che ciò tornerà a mia salvezza, mediante le vostre suppliche e l'assistenza dello Spirito di Gesù Cristo,20 secondo la mia viva attesa e la mia speranza di non aver da vergognarmi di nulla; ma che con ogni franchezza, ora come sempre, Cristo sarà glorificato nel mio corpo, sia con la vita, sia con la morte.

21 Infatti per me il vivere è Cristo e il morire guadagno.
22 Ma se il vivere nella carne porta frutto all'opera mia, non saprei che cosa preferire.23 Sono stretto da due lati: da una parte ho il desiderio di partire e di essere con Cristo, perché è molto meglio;24 ma, dall'altra, il mio rimanere nel corpo è più necessario per voi.25 Ho questa ferma fiducia: che rimarrò e starò con tutti voi per il vostro progresso e per la vostra gioia nella fede,

26 affinché, a motivo del mio ritorno in mezzo a voi, abbondi il vostro vanto in Cristo Gesù.

Esortazione alla perseveranza

27 Soltanto, comportatevi in modo degno del vangelo di Cristo, affinché, sia che io venga a vedervi sia che io resti lontano, senta dire di voi che state fermi in uno stesso spirito, combattendo insieme con un medesimo animo per la fede del vangelo,28 per nulla spaventati dagli avversari. Questo per loro è una prova evidente di perdizione, ma per voi di salvezza; e ciò da parte di Dio.29 Perché vi è stata concessa la grazia, rispetto a Cristo, non soltanto di credere in lui, ma anche di soffrire per lui,

30 sostenendo voi pure la stessa lotta che mi avete veduto sostenere e nella quale ora sentite dire che io mi trovo.

2 I pray that God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you and will bless you with peace!

Paul's Prayer for the Church //in Philippi

6 God is the one who began this good work in you, and I am certain that he won't stop before it is complete on the day that Christ Jesus returns.
7 You have a special place in my heart. So it is only natural for me to feel the way I do. All of you have helped in the work God has given me, as I defend the good news and tell about it here in jail.

8 God himself knows how much I want to see you. He knows I care for you in the same way Christ Jesus does.
9 I pray that your love will keep on growing and you will fully know and understand 10 how to make the right choices. Then you will still be pure and innocent when Christ returns. And until that day,

11 Jesus Christ will keep you busy doing good deeds that bring glory and praise to God.

What Life Means to Paul

14 Now most of the Lord's followers have become brave and are fearlessly telling the message.t
15 Some are preaching about Christ because they are jealous and envious of us. Others are preaching because they want to help. 16 They love Christ and know I am here to defend the good news about him. 17 But the ones who are jealous of us are not sincere. They just want to cause trouble for me while I am in jail.

18 But that doesn't matter. All that matters is that people are telling about Christ, whether they are sincere or not. This is what makes me glad.
I will keep on being glad, 19 because I know that your prayers and the help that comes from the Spirit of Christ Jesus will keep me safe.

20 I honestly expect and hope I will never do anything to be ashamed of. Whether I live or die, I always want to be as brave as I am now and bring honor to Christ.
21 If I live, it will be for Christ, and if I die, I will gain even more. 22 I don't know what to choose. I could keep on living and doing something useful. 23 It is a hard choice to make. I want to die and be with Christ, because this would be much better. 24-25 But I know that all of you still need me. This is why I am sure I will stay on to help you grow and be happy in your faith.

26 Then, when I visit you again, you will have good reason to take great pride in Christ Jesus because of me.t

27 Above all else, you must live in a way that brings honor to the good news about Christ. Then, whether I visit you or not, I will hear that all of you think alike. I will know that you are working together and are struggling side by side to get others to believe the good news.
28 Be brave when you face your enemies. Your courage will show them that they are going to be destroyed, and it will show you that you will be saved. God will make all of this happen, 29 and he has blessed you. Not only do you have faith in Christ, but you suffer for him. 30 t You saw me suffer, and you still hear about my troubles. Now you must suffer in the same way.
