APOCALISSE 18

1 E dopo queste cose vidi un altro angelo che scendeva dal cielo, il quale aveva gran potestà; e la terra fu illuminata dalla sua gloria. 2 Ed egli gridò con voce potente, dicendo: Caduta, caduta è Babilonia la grande, ed è divenuta albergo di demoni e ricetto d'ogni spirito immondo e ricetto d'ogni uccello immondo e abominevole. 3 Poiché tutte le nazioni han bevuto del vino dell'ira della sua fornicazione, e i re della terra han fornicato con lei, e i mercanti della terra si sono arricchiti con la sua sfrenata lussuria. 4 Poi udii un'altra voce dal cielo che diceva: Uscite da essa, o popolo mio, affinché non siate partecipi de' suoi peccati e non abbiate parte alle sue plaghe; 5 poiché i suoi peccati si sono accumulati fino al cielo e Dio si è ricordato delle iniquità di lei. 6 Rendetele il contraccambio di quello ch'ella vi ha fatto, e rendetele al doppio la retribuzione delle sue opere; nel calice in cui ha mesciuto ad altri, mescetele il doppio. 7 Quanto ella ha glorificato se stessa ed ha lussureggiato, tanto datele di tormento e di cordoglio. Poiché ella dice in cuor suo: Io seggo regina e non son vedova e non vedrò mai cordoglio, 8 perciò in uno stesso giorno verranno le sue piaghe, mortalità e cordoglio e fame, e sarà consumata dal fuoco; poiché potente è il Signore Iddio che l'ha giudicata. 9 E i re della terra che fornicavano e lussureggiavan con lei la piangeranno e faran cordoglio per lei quando vedranno il fumo del suo incendio; 10 e standosene da lungi per tema del suo tormento diranno: Ahi! ahi! Babilonia, la gran città, la potente città! il tuo giudicio è venuto in un momento! 11 I mercanti della terra piangeranno e faranno cordoglio per lei, perché nessuno compera più le loro mercanzie: 12 mercanzie d'oro, d'argento, di pietre preziose, di perle, di lino fino, di porpora, di seta, di scarlatto; e ogni sorta di legno odoroso, e ogni sorta d'oggetti d'avorio e ogni sorta d'oggetti di legno preziosissimo e di rame, di ferro e di marmo, 13 e la cannella e le essenze, e i profumi, e gli unguenti, e l'incenso, e il vino, e l'olio, e il fior di farina, e il grano, e i buoi, e le pecore, e i cavalli, e i carri, e i corpi e le anime d'uomini. 14 E i frutti che l'anima tua appetiva se ne sono andati lungi da te; e tutte le cose delicate e sontuose son perdute per te e non si troveranno mai più. 15 I mercanti di queste cose che sono stati arricchiti da lei se ne staranno da lungi per tema del suo tormento, piangendo e facendo cordoglio, e dicendo: 16 Ahi! ahi! la gran città ch'era vestita di lino fino e di porpora e di scarlatto, e adorna d'oro e di pietre preziose e di perle! Una cotanta ricchezza è stata devastata in un momento. 17 E tutti i piloti e tutti i naviganti e i marinari e quanti trafficano sul mare se ne staranno da lungi; 18 e vedendo il fumo dell'incendio d'essa esclameranno dicendo: Qual città era simile a questa gran città? 19 E si getteranno della polvere sul capo e grideranno, piangendo e facendo cordoglio e dicendo: Ahi! ahi! la gran città nella quale tutti coloro che aveano navi in mare si erano arricchiti con la sua magnificenza! In un momento ella è stata ridotta in un deserto. 20 Rallegrati d'essa, o cielo, e voi santi, ed apostoli e profeti, rallegratevi poiché Dio, giudicandola, vi ha reso giustizia. 21 Poi un potente angelo sollevò una pietra grossa come una gran macina, e la gettò nel mare dicendo: Così sarà con impeto precipitata Babilonia, la gran città, e non sarà più ritrovata. 22 E in te non sarà più udito suono di arpisti né di musici né di flautisti né di sonatori di tromba; né sarà più trovato in te artefice alcuno d'arte qualsiasi, né s'udrà più in te rumor di macina. 23 E non rilucerà più in te lume di lampada e non s'udrà più in te voce di sposo e di sposa; perché i tuoi mercanti erano i principi della terra, perché tutte le nazioni sono state sedotte dalle tue malìe, 24 e in lei è stato trovato il sangue dei profeti e dei santi e di tutti quelli che sono stati uccisi sopra la terra.

REVELATION 18

The Fall of Babylon

1 I saw another angel come from heaven. This one had great power, and the earth was bright because of his glory.

2 t The angel shouted,
“Fallen! Powerful Babylon
has fallen
and is now the home
of demons.
It is the den
of every filthy spirit
and of all unclean birds,
and every dirty
and hated animal.

3  t Babylon's evil and immoral wine
has made all nations drunk.
Every king on earth
has slept with her,
and every merchant on earth
is rich because of
her evil desires.”

4  t Then I heard another voice
from heaven shout,
“My people, you must escape
from Babylon.
Don't take part in her sins
and share her punishment.

5  t Her sins are piled
as high as heaven.
God has remembered the evil
she has done.

6  t Treat her as she
has treated others.
Make her pay double
for what she has done.
Make her drink twice as much
of what she mixed
for others.

7  t That woman honored herself
with a life of luxury.
Reward her now
with suffering and pain.
“Deep in her heart
Babylon said,
‘I am the queen!
Never will I be a widow
or know what it means
to be sad.’

8 And so, in a single day
she will suffer the pain
of sorrow, hunger, and death.
Fire will destroy
her dead body,
because her judge
is the powerful Lord God.”
9  t Every king on earth who slept with her and shared in her luxury will mourn. They will weep, when they see the smoke from that fire.

10 Her sufferings will frighten them, and they will stand at a distance and say,
“Pity that great
and powerful city!
Pity Babylon!
In a single hour
her judgment has come.”
11  t Every merchant on earth will mourn, because there is no one to buy their goods. 12 t There won't be anyone to buy their gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, sweet-smelling wood, fancy carvings of ivory and wood, as well as things made of bronze, iron, or marble.

13 No one will buy their cinnamon, spices, incense, myrrh, frankincense, t wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, chariots, slaves, and other humans.

14 Babylon, the things
your heart desired
have all escaped
from you.
Every luxury
and all your glory
will be lost forever.
You will never
get them back.
15  t The merchants had become rich because of her. But when they saw her sufferings, they were terrified. They stood at a distance, crying and mourning.

16 Then they shouted,
“Pity the great city
of Babylon!
She dressed in fine linen
and wore purple
and scarlet cloth.
She had jewelry
made of gold
and precious stones
and pearls.

17  t Yet in a single hour
her riches disappeared.”
Every ship captain and passenger and sailor stood at a distance, together with everyone who does business by traveling on the sea.

18 t When they saw the smoke from her fire, they shouted, “This was the greatest city ever!”

19  t They cried loudly, and in their sorrow they threw dust on their heads, as they said,
“Pity the great city
of Babylon!
Everyone who sailed the seas
became rich
from her treasures.
But in a single hour
the city was destroyed.

20  t The heavens should be happy
with God's people
and apostles and prophets.
God has punished her
for them.”

21  t A powerful angel then picked up a huge stone and threw it into the sea. The angel said,
“This is how the great city
of Babylon
will be thrown down,
never to rise again.

22  t t The music of harps and singers
and of flutes and trumpets
will no longer be heard.
No workers will ever
set up shop in that city,
and the sound
of grinding grain
will be silenced forever.

23 Lamps will no longer shine
anywhere in Babylon,
and couples will never again
say wedding vows there.
Her merchants ruled
the earth,
and by her witchcraft
she fooled all nations.

24  t On the streets of Babylon
is found the blood
of God's people
and of his prophets,
and everyone else.”
