Romeine 1
1 Van Paulus. Ek dien Christus Jesus. Hy het my aangestel as apostel. Dit is my taak om God se goeie nuus oral bekend te maak.2 Hierdie goeie nuus is al lankal deur God se boodskappers in die Bybel neergeskryf.3 Dit handel oor God se Seun, Jesus Christus. Hy is ons Here. Hy kom uit die nageslag van Dawid.4 Toe Jesus na sy kruisiging uit die dood opgestaan het, het die Heilige Gees aan Hom die heel belangrikste posisie in die hemel gegee. Hy is daar in die hemel triomfantlik as die Seun van God aangewys. Daarom besit Hy nou al die mag in die hemel en op die aarde.
5 Jesus was baie goed vir my. Hy het my aangestel as sy apostel. Ek moet vir mense uit alle volke van Hom vertel. Ek sê vir hulle om in Hom te glo en om te doen wat Hy sê.
6 Julle tel onder die gelukkiges wat hierdie goeie nuus glo. Christus het julle ook geroep om in Hom te glo.
7 Ek skryf hierdie brief aan julle almal in Rome. God het julle baie lief. Hy het julle eenkant gesit vir Homself sodat julle Hom voltyds kan dien.
Die goedheid en vrede van God, ons Vader, en die Here Jesus Christus is by julle.
8 Ek kan nie anders as om deur Jesus Christus vir my God dankie te sê dat mense oor die hele wêreld van julle geloof praat nie.9 En God, wat ek met my hele lewe dien omdat ek die goeie nuus oor sy Seun bekendmaak, weet dat julle nooit uit my gedagtes is nie.10 Elke keer as ek bid, vra ek Hom of Hy tog nie 'n plan kan maak sodat ek binnekort na julle toe kan kom nie.11 Ek wil julle baie graag persoonlik ontmoet. Ek het die wonderlikste geestelike geskenke uit God se hand ontvang waarin ek julle wil laat deel. Dit sal julle geloof sterker maak.12 Ek wil graag ook iets van julle ontvang: julle groot geloof kan my aanspoor om nog harder vir die Here te werk. So kan ons mekaar help om die Here nog beter te dien.
13 Weet julle hoeveel keer ek al probeer het om na julle toe te kom? Tot nou toe het daar elke keer iets voorgeval. Maar hou moed, ek is op pad. Ek beplan om ook daar in Rome vir julle en vir ander mense van Christus te vertel. Op hierdie manier sal daar ook by julle 'n ryk oes vir die Here ingesamel word.
14 Dit is my plig om aan alle mense op aarde, Jode en nie-Jode, geleerdes en ongeletterdes, die goeie nuus oor Jesus Christus bekend te maak.15 Daarom wil ek bitter graag na julle toe kom. Ook daar in Rome moet ek die goeie nuus laat weerklink.
16 Ek is glad nie skaam om die goeie nuus oor Jesus Christus bekend te maak nie. God se groot krag is aan die werk op elke plek waar hierdie boodskap verkondig word. Hy red elkeen wat dit glo, Jode en nie-Jode. God se goedheid word sigbaar oral waar mense met hulle hele lewe op Hom vertrou.17 Daar staan immers in die Bybel geskryf: "Almal wat deur God van hulle sondes vrygespreek is omdat hulle glo, sal die ware lewe ken."
18 Uit sy hemelse woonplek wys God dat Hy baie kwaad is oor al die sondige dinge wat die mense hier op die aarde aanvang. Hulle verruil die waarheid vir leuens.19 Dis 'n groot fout, want God het alles wat hulle oor Hom behoort te weet binne hulle bereik geplaas.20 Van die begin van die skepping af het God Hom baie duidelik aan ons bekendgemaak. Alhoewel niemand van ons God met die blote oog kan sien nie, het Hy sy groot krag oral in die skepping aan ons kom wys. Sy handewerk wys dat Hy die enigste ware God is. Daarom het die mense geen verskoning nie.21 Hulle weet baie goed wie God is. Hulle weier egter om Hom te aanbid of Hom te dank vir al die goedheid wat Hy aan ons bewys. Daarom dat hulle soos 'n spul dwase optree. Hulle hele lewe is een stuk donkerte.22 Tog maak hulle asof hulle verskriklik slim is, al is hulle eintlik dom en sonder insig.23 Hierdie mense het selfs so ver gegaan om hulle eie gode te maak. Hulle het die voorreg om die ewige God te ken gaan staan en verruil vir 'n spul handgemaakte gode. Nou buig hulle voor dié lewelose afbeeldings van mense, voëls, diere en reptiele.
24 God laat egter nie toe dat mense sy groot Naam deur die modder sleep nie. Daarom het Hy besluit om hierdie mense te straf deur hulle aan hulle eie lot oor te laat. Nou leef hulle al hulle sondige begeertes na hartelus uit. Die gevolg: hulle het erger as 'n klomp varke geword omdat hulle meedoen aan elke denkbare vorm van seksuele losbandigheid.25 En dit net omdat hulle die waarheid verruil het vir 'n spul leuens. In plaas daarvan dat hulle voor die Skepper buig, verkies hulle om voor hulle eie handewerk te buig. Dit is 'n groot fout. Daar is immers maar net een God wat tot in alle ewigheid aanbid moet word.
26 God het al hierdie sondaars oorgegee aan hulle siek begeertes. Daarom het vroue begin om die normale seksuele gemeenskap met mans te verruil vir abnormale seksuele gemeenskap met ander vroue.27 Die mans het presies dieselfde gedoen. Hulle het ook hulle normale seksuele gemeenskap met vroue laat staan omdat hulle vreemde seksuele gemeenskap met ander mans wou hê. As gevolg daarvan het hulle allerhande skandelike dade met mekaar begin pleeg. Maar hulle het 'n baie duur prys daarvoor betaal. God het hulle gestraf deur hulle aan hulleself oor te laat.
28 Omdat hierdie mense glad nie daarin belangstel om God op die regte manier te ken nie, het Hy toegelaat dat hulle kan dink net wat hulle wil en doen wat hulle wil.29 Daarom is hulle hele lewe nou een groot deurmekaarspul. Hulle neem deel aan elke denkbare vorm van goddeloosheid. Hierdie mense is propvol boosheid, seksuele wellus, geldgierigheid en slegtheid.30 Hulle harte loop oor van slegte dinge soos jaloesie, moord, twis, bedrog, kwaadpratery en 'n geskinder. Hulle steek mekaar in die rug en hulle haat God. Boonop dink hulle heeltemal te veel van hulleself. Hulle praat groot. Elke dag dink hulle 'n spul nuwe sondes uit. Hulle haat hulle ouers.31 Hulle is ongehoorsaam en dom. Ja, hierdie heidene is 'n spul gevoellose wesens wat net mooi niks vir ander mense omgee nie.32 Natuurlik weet hulle hoe God wil hê hulle moet leef. En hulle weet ook dat die doderyk op hulle wag. Tog hou hulle aan met al hulle booshede. En asof dit nie erg genoeg is nie, moedig hulle ander mense aan om hulle slegte voorbeeld te volg.
Romans 1
Salutation
1 From Paul,t a slavets of Christ Jesus,s called to be an apostle,t set apart for the gospel of God.t2 This gospelt he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures,3 concerning his Son who was a descendantt of David with reference to the flesh,t4 who was appointed the Son-of-God-in-powers according to the Holy Spiritt by the resurrectiont from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.5 Through himt we have received grace and our apostleshipt to bring about the obediencet of faitht among all the Gentiles on behalf of his name.6 You also are among them,t called to belong to Jesus Christ.t
7 To all those loved by God in Rome,s called to be saints:t Grace and peace to yout from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Paul’s Desire to Visit Rome
8 First of all,t I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world.9 For God, whom I serve in my spirit by preaching the gospelt of his Son, is my witness thatt I continually remember you10 and I always askt in my prayers, if perhaps now at last I may succeed in visiting you according to the will of God.t11 For I long to see you, so that I may impart to you some spiritual gifts to strengthen you,12 that is, that we may be mutually comforted by one another’s faith,t both yours and mine.13 I do not want you to be unaware,s brothers and sisters,t that I often intended to come to you (and was prevented until now), so that I may have some fruit even among you, just as I already have among the rest of the Gentiles.t14 I am a debtort both to the Greeks and to the barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.
15 Thus I am eagert also to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome.s
The Power of the Gospel
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.s
17 For the righteousnesst of God is revealed in the gospelt from faith to faith,t just as it is written, “The righteous by faith will live.”s
The Condemnation of the Unrighteous
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of peoplet who suppress the truth by theirt unrighteousness,t19 because what can be known about God is plain to them,t because God has made it plain to them.20 For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So peoplet are without excuse.21 For although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him thanks, but they became futile in their thoughts and their senseless heartst were darkened.22 Although they claimedt to be wise, they became fools
23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for an image resembling mortal human beingst or birds or four-footed animalss or reptiles.
24 Therefore God gave them overs in the desires of their hearts to impurity, to dishonort their bodies among themselves.t
25 Theyt exchanged the truth of God for a liet and worshiped and served the creationt rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged the natural sexual relations for unnatural ones,t
27 and likewise the men also abandoned natural relations with woment and were inflamed in their passionst for one another. Ment committed shameless acts with men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God,t God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what should not be done.t29 They are filledt with every kind of unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, malice. They are rife witht envy, murder, strife, deceit, hostility. They are gossips,30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, contrivers of all sorts of evil, disobedient to parents,31 senseless, covenant-breakers,t heartless, ruthless.
32 Although they fully knowt God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die,t they not only do them but also approve of those who practice them.s
