…Con le labbra e col cuore…
1 Cari fratelli, il desiderio più ardente del mio cuore e la mia preghiera continua è che gli Ebrei siano salvati.2 Devo dire che onorano Dio con molto entusiasmo, ma senza conoscenza.3 Perché non hanno capito che Cristo è morto per renderli giusti davanti a Dio. Cercano, invece, di rendersi abbastanza buoni per guadagnarsi il favore di Dio, osservando le leggi e le usanze ebraiche. Ma non è questa la via della salvezza, secondo il piano del Signore!4 Non capiscono che ciò che cercano di ottenere, ubbidendo alla legge di Mosè, Cristo lo dà a quelli che credono in lui. Perché Cristo è lo scopo e la fine della legge di Mosè.5 Infatti, Mosè descrive così la salvezza per mezzo della legge: « Soltanto chi riesce ad essere perfettamente giusto, a resistere alla tentazione e a non peccare per tutta la vita, sarà salvo ».6 Riguardo la salvezza che viene dalla fede non dire nel tuo cuore: « Chi salirà nel cielo?» (cioè per portare giù Cristo). Oppure:7 «Chi scenderà nell’abisso? » (cioè per portare Cristo su dai morti).8 Le Scritture dicono chiaramente: « La salvezza che viene dall’ascolto della predicazione (che dà la fede in Cristo) è a portata di mano di ognuno di noi; se vuoi, è nel tuo cuore e già sulla tua bocca ».9 Perché, se con le tue labbra dici agli altri che Gesù Cristo è il tuo Signore, e credi nel tuo cuore che Dio l’ha resuscitato dalla morte, sarai salvato.10 Credere con il cuore porta ad essere giusti con Dio; proclamare con la bocca porta alla salvezza.11 Proprio come dicono le scritture: « Chiunque crede in lui non sarà deluso ».12 Non c’è quindi alcuna differenza fra chi è ebreo e chi non lo è: tutti hanno lo stesso Signore, che dona generosamente le sue ricchezze a tutti quelli che gliele chiedono.13 Infatti le Scritture affermano: « Chiunque invoca il nome del Signore sarà salvato ».14 Ma come potranno chiedergli di essere salvati, se non credono in lui? E come possono credere in lui, se non ne hanno mai sentito parlare? E come possono sentir parlare di lui, se qualcuno non lo fa?15 E come è possibile che qualcuno vada a parlare di lui, se non c’è nessuno che lo mandi? Di questo parlano le Scritture, quando dicono: « Com’è bello vedere arrivare quelli che predicano il Vangelo della pace con Dio, e portano belle notizie di cose buone! » In altre parole: benvenuti quelli che predicano il Vangelo di Dio!16 Ma non tutti quelli che sentono parlare del Vangelo lo accettano. Lo dice il profeta Isaia: « Signore, chi di loro ha creduto, quando ho parlato? »17 Quindi la fede nasce proprio dall’ascolto del Vangelo, la buona notizia che riguarda Cristo.18 Che si può dire degli Ebrei? Che non hanno mai sentito parlare del Vangelo? Tutt’altro, perché è stato annunciato per tutto il mondo, proclamato ai quattro venti.19 Allora mi chiedo: non può darsi che gli Ebrei non abbiano capito che Dio avrebbe dato la sua salvezza ad altri, se continuavano a rifiutarla? Sì, l’hanno capito, perché, fin dai tempi di Mosè, Dio aveva detto che avrebbe ingelosito il suo popolo per risvegliarlo, dando la salvezza a gente che non capiva, gente che non era neppure un popolo.20 Nel libro di Isaia, Dio dice chiaramente: « Sono stato trovato da gente che neppure mi cercava, mi sono fatto conoscere da quelli che non chiedevano di me ».21 Nel frattempo il Signore continua a tendere le sue mani verso i Giudei, ma essi continuano a discutere e a ribellarsi; non vogliono arrendersi a lui.
Romans 10
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and my supplication to God is for them, that they may be saved.2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.3 For being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.4 For Christ is the end of the law unto righteousness to every one that believeth.5 For Moses writeth that the man that doeth the righteousness which is of the law shall live thereby.6 But the righteousness which is of faith saith thus, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down:)7 or, Who shall descend into the abyss? (That is, to bring Christ up from the dead.)8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:9 because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:10 for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be put to shame.12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek: for the same Lord is Lord of all, and is rich unto all that call upon him:13 for, Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?15 and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!16 But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?17 So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.18 But I say, Did they not hear? Yea, verily, Their sound went out into all the earth, And their words unto the ends of the world.
19 But I say, Did Israel not know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy with that which is no nation, With a nation void of understanding will I anger you.
20 And Isaiah is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I became manifest unto them that asked not of me.
21 But as to Israel he saith, All the day long did I spread out my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.
