로마서 11

이스라엘의 남은 사람

1 그러면 내가 묻습니다. 하나님께서 자기 백성을 버리신 것은 아닙니까? 그럴 수 없습니다. 나도 이스라엘 사람이요, 아브라함의 후손이요, 베냐민 지파에 속한 사람입니다. 2 하나님께서는 미리 아신 자기 백성을 버리지 않으셨습니다. 여러분은 성경이 엘리야를 두고 하신 말씀을 알지 못합니까? 그가 이스라엘을 고발하여, 하나님께 이렇게 호소하였습니다. 3 t“주님, 그들은 주님의 예언자들을 죽이고, 주님의 제단들을 헐어 버렸습니다. 남은 것은 나 혼자밖에 없는데, 그들은 내 목숨마저 찾고 있습니다.” 4 그런데 하나님께서는 그에게 어떻게 대답하셨습니까? t“내가, 바알에게 무릎을 꿇지 않은 사람 칠천 명을 내 앞에 남겨 두었다” 하셨습니다. 5 이와 같이, 지금 이 시기에도 은혜로 택하심을 입은 사람들이 남아 있습니다. 6 은혜로 된 것이면, 행위에 근거한 것이 아닙니다. 그렇지 않으면, 그 은혜는 이미 은혜가 아닙니다.t 7 그러면 무슨 결과가 생겼습니까? 이스라엘 백성은 찾던 것을 얻지 못하였지만, 택하심을 받은 사람들은 그것을 얻었습니다. 그리고 그 나머지 사람들은 완고해졌습니다. 8 성경에 이렇게 기록한 바와 같습니다. t“하나님께서 그들에게는 혼미한 영을 주셨으니, 오늘까지 그들은, 눈이 있어도 보지 못하고 귀가 있어도 듣지 못한다.”

9  다윗도 다음과 같이 말하였습니다. t“그들의 밥상이 그들에게 올무가 되고 덫이 되게 하여 주십시오. 그들이 걸려 넘어지고, 보복을 받게 하여 주십시오.

10 그들의 눈이 어두워져서 보지 못하게 되도록 하여 주십시오. 그들의 등이 언제나 굽어 있게 하여 주십시오.”

이방 사람의 구원

11 그러면 내가 묻습니다. 이스라엘이 걸려 넘어져서 완전히 쓰러져 망하게끔 되었습니까? 그럴 수 없습니다. 그들의 허물 때문에 구원이 이방 사람에게 이르렀는데, 이것은 이스라엘에게 질투하는 마음이 일어나게 하려는 것입니다. 12 이스라엘의 허물이 세상의 부요함이 되고, 이스라엘의 실패가 이방 사람의 부요함이 되었다면, 이스라엘 전체가 바로 설 때에는, 그 복이 얼마나 더 엄청나겠습니까? 13 이제 나는 이방 사람인 여러분에게 말합니다. 내가 이방 사람에게 보내심을 받은 사도이니만큼, 나는 내 직분을 영광스럽게 생각합니다. 14 나는 아무쪼록, t내 동족에게 질투심을 일으켜서, 그 가운데서 몇 사람만이라도 구원하고 싶습니다. 15 하나님께서 그들을 버리심이 세상과의 화해를 이루는 것이라면, 그들을 받아들이심은 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아나는 삶을 주심이 아니고 무엇이겠습니까? 16 맏물로 바치는 빵 반죽 덩이가 거룩하면 남은 온 덩이도 그러하고, 뿌리가 거룩하면 가지도 그러합니다. 17 그런데 참올리브 나무 가지들 가운데서 얼마를 잘라 내시고서, 그 자리에다 돌올리브 나무인 t그대를 접붙여 주셨기 때문에, t그대가 참올리브 나무의 뿌리에서 올라오는 양분을 함께 받게 된 것이면, 18 t그대는 본래의 가지들을 향하여 우쭐대지 말아야 합니다. 비록 t그대가 우쭐댈지라도, t그대가 뿌리를 지탱하는 것이 아니라, 뿌리가 t그대를 지탱한다는 것을 명심해야 합니다. 19 그러므로 “본래의 가지가 잘려 나간 것은, 그 자리에 내가 접붙임을 받게 하시려는 것이었다” 하고 t그대는 말해야 할 것입니다. 20 옳습니다. 그 가지들이 잘린 것은 믿지 않은 탓이고, t그대가 그 자리에 붙어 있는 것은 믿었기 때문입니다. 그러니 교만한 마음을 품지 말고, 도리어 두려워하십시오. 21 하나님께서 본래의 가지들을 아끼지 않으셨으니, 접붙은 가지도 아끼지 않으실 것입니다. 22 그러므로 하나님의 인자하심과 준엄하심을 생각해 보십시오. 하나님은 넘어진 사람들에게는 준엄하십니다. 그러나 t그대가 하나님의 인자하심에 머물러 있으면, 하나님이 t그대에게 인자하게 대하실 것입니다. 그렇지 않으면, t그대도 잘릴 것입니다. 23 그러나 믿지 않았던 탓으로 잘려나갔던 가지들이 믿게 되면, 그 가지들도 접붙임을 받게 될 것입니다. 하나님께서는 그들을 다시 접붙이실 수 있습니다. 24 t그대가 본래의 돌올리브 나무에서 잘려서, 그 본성을 거슬러 참올리브 나무에 접붙임을 받았다면, 본래 붙어 있던 이 가지들이 제 나무에 다시 접붙임을 받는 것이야 얼마나 더 쉬운 일이겠습니까?

이스라엘의 회복

25  t형제자매 여러분, 나는 여러분이 이 신비한 비밀을 알기를 바랍니다. 그것은 여러분이 스스로 현명하다고 생각하는 일이 없게 하려는 것입니다. 그 비밀은 이러합니다. 이방 사람의 수가 다 찰 때까지 이스라엘 사람들 가운데서 일부가 완고해진 대로 있으리라는 것과, 26 온 이스라엘이 구원을 받게 되리라는 것입니다. 그것은 성경에 이렇게 기록되어 있는 바와 같습니다. t“구원하시는 분이 시온에서 오실 것이니, 야곱에게서 경건하지 못함을 제거하실 것이다.

27 이것은 그들과 나 사이의 언약이니, 내가 그들의 죄를 없앨 때에 이루어질 것이다.”

28 복음의 관점에서 판단하면, 이스라엘 사람들은 여러분이 잘 되라고 t하나님의 원수가 되었지만, 택하심을 받았다는 관점에서 판단하면, 그들은 조상 덕분에 하나님의 사랑을 받는 사람들입니다. 29 하나님께서 주시는 고마운 선물과 부르심은 철회되지 않습니다. 30 전에 하나님께 순종하지 않던 여러분이, 이제 이스라엘 사람의 불순종 때문에 하나님의 자비를 입게 되었습니다. 31 이와 같이, 지금은 순종하지 않고 있는 이스라엘 사람들도, 여러분이 받은 그 자비를 보고 회개하여, 마침내는 자비하심을 입게 될 것입니다. 32 하나님께서 모든 사람을 순종하지 않는 상태에 가두신 것은 그들에게 자비를 베푸시려는 것입니다. 33 하나님의 부유하심은 어찌 그리 크십니까? 하나님의 지혜와 지식은 어찌 그리 깊고 깊으십니까? 그 어느 누가 하나님의 판단을 헤아려 알 수 있으며, 그 어느 누가 하나님의 길을 더듬어 찾아낼 수 있겠습니까?

34  t“누가 주님의 마음을 알았으며, 누가 주님의 조언자가 되었습니까?”

35  t“누가 먼저 무엇을 드렸기에 주님의 답례를 바라겠습니까?”

36 만물이 그에게서 나고, 그로 말미암아 있고, 그를 위하여 있습니다. 그에게 영광이 세세에 있기를 빕니다. 아멘.

ROMANS 11

God Has Not Rejected //His People

1  t Am I saying that God has turned his back on his people? Certainly not! I am one of the people of Israel, and I myself am a descendant of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God did not turn his back on his chosen people. Don't you remember reading in the Scriptures how Elijah complained to God about the people of Israel?

3 t He said, “Lord, they killed your prophets and destroyed your altars. I am the only one left, and now they want to kill me.”
4  t But the Lord told Elijah, “I still have 7,000 followers who have not worshiped Baal.” 5 It is the same way now. God treated the people of Israel with undeserved grace, and so a few of them are still his followers.

6 This happened because of God's undeserved kindness and not because of anything they have done. It could not have happened except for God's gift of undeserved grace.
7 This means that only a chosen few of the people of Israel found what all of them were searching for. And the rest of them were stubborn,

8 t just as the Scriptures say,
“God made them so stupid
that their eyes are blind,
and their ears
are still deaf.”

9  t Then David said,
“Turn their meals
into bait for a trap,
so that they will stumble
and be given
what they deserve.

10 Blindfold their eyes!
Don't let them see.
Bend their backs
beneath a burden
that will never be lifted.”

Gentiles Will Be Saved

11 Do I mean that the people of Israel fell, never to get up again? Certainly not! Their failure made it possible for the Gentiles to be saved, and this will make the people of Israel jealous.

12 But if the rest of the world's people were helped so much by their sin and loss, they will be helped even more by their full return.
13 I am now speaking to you Gentiles, and as long as I am an apostle to you, I will take pride in my work. 14 I hope in this way to make some of my own people jealous enough to be saved. 15 When Israel rejected God, t the rest of the people in the world were able to turn to him. So when God makes friends with Israel, it will be like bringing the dead back to life.

16 If part of a batch of dough is made holy by being offered to God, then all of the dough is holy. If the roots of a tree are holy, the rest of the tree is holy too.
17 You Gentiles are like branches of a wild olive tree made to be part of a cultivated olive tree. You have taken the place of some branches that were cut away from it. And because of this, you enjoy the blessings that come from being part of that cultivated tree.

18 But don't think you are better than the branches that were cut away. Just remember you are not supporting the roots of this tree. Its roots are supporting you.
19 Maybe you think those branches were cut away, so you could be put in their place. 20 That's true enough. But they were cut away because they did not have faith, and you are where you are because you do have faith. So don't be proud, but be afraid.

21 If God cut away those natural branches, couldn't he do the same to you?

22 Now you see both how kind and how hard God can be. He was hard on those who fell, but he was kind to you. And he will keep on being kind to you, if you keep on trusting in his kindness. Otherwise, you will be cut away too.
23 If those other branches will start having faith, they will be made a part of that tree again. God has the power to put them back.

24 After all, it wasn't natural for branches to be cut from a wild olive tree and to be made part of a cultivated olive tree. So it is much more likely that God will join the natural branches back to the cultivated olive tree.

The People of Israel //Will Be Brought Back

25 My friends, I don't want you Gentiles to be too proud of yourselves. So I will explain the mystery of what has happened to the people of Israel. Some of them have become stubborn, and they will stay like that until the complete number of you Gentiles has come in.

26 t In this way all of Israel will be saved, as the Scriptures say,
“From Zion someone will come
to rescue us.
Then Jacob's descendants
will stop being evil.

27  t This is what the Lord
has promised to do
when he forgives their sins.”
28 The people of Israel are treated as God's enemies, so the good news can come to you Gentiles. But they are still the chosen ones, and God loves them because of their famous ancestors.

29 God doesn't take back the gifts he has given or disown the people he has chosen.
30 At one time you Gentiles rejected God. But now Israel has rejected God, and you have been shown mercy. 31 And because of the mercy shown to you, they will also be shown mercy.

32 All people have disobeyed God, and that's why he treats them as prisoners. But he does this, so that he can have mercy on all of them.

33  t Who can measure the wealth and wisdom and knowledge of God? Who can understand his decisions or explain what he does?

34  t “Has anyone known
the thoughts of the Lord
or given him advice?

35  t Has anyone loaned
something to the Lord
that must be repaid?”
36  t Everything comes from the Lord. All things were made because of him and will return to him. Praise the Lord forever! Amen.
