Verpligtinge teenoor die owerhede

1 Elke mens moet hom onderwerp aan die owerhede wat oor hom gestel is. Daar is immers geen gesag wat nie van God kom nie, en die owerhede wat daar is, is daar deur die beskikking van God. 2 Wie hom teen gesag verset, kom dus in opstand teen die ordening van God; en wie in opstand kom, sal sy verdiende straf kry. 3 'n Mens hoef nie vir die owerhede bang te wees as jy goed doen nie, maar wel as jy kwaad doen. Wil jy sonder vrees vir die owerheid lewe? Doen dan wat goed is, en die owerheid sal jou prys, 4 want die owerheid is 'n dienaar van God tot jou beswil. Maar as jy kwaad doen, het jy rede om bang te wees, want die owerheid het nie verniet die reg om te straf nie. Hy is immers ook hierin die dienaar van God dat hy die kwaaddoener moet straf. 5 Daarom moet jy jou onderwerp, nie net omdat jy vir straf bang is nie, maar ook omdat dit 'n gewetensaak is.

6 Dit is ook waarom julle belasting betaal, want die owerhede is dienaars van God en hulle is besig om hulle opdrag uit te voer. 7 Gee dus aan almal wat hulle toekom: belasting as dit belasting is, aksyns as dit aksyns is, ontsag as dit ontsag is, eer as dit eer is.

Liefde is die volle uitvoering van die wet

8 Julle moet niemand iets verskuldig wees nie, behalwe om mekaar lief te hê. Wie sy medemens liefhet, voer die hele wet van God uit. 9 Al die gebooie: “Jy mag nie egbreuk pleeg nie, jy mag nie moord pleeg nie, jy mag nie steel nie, jy mag nie begeer nie,”t of watter ander gebod daar ook al is, word immers in hierdie een gebod saamgevat: “Jy moet jou naaste liefhê soos jouself.”t 10 Die liefde doen die naaste geen kwaad aan nie. Daarom is die liefde die volle uitvoering van die wet.

11 En dit alles is nodig omdat julle weet hoe laat dit al is. Die uur is reeds daar dat julle uit die slaap moet wakker word, want die tyd van ons finale verlossing is nou nader as toe ons tot die geloof gekom het. 12 Die nag is byna verby; dit is amper dag. Laat ons dan ophou met die werke van die duisternis; laat ons die wapens van die lig opneem. 13 Ons moet welvoeglik lewe soos dit in die daglig hoort. Daar moet geen drinkery en uitspattigheid, geen ontug en onsedelikheid, geen rusie en jaloesie wees nie. 14 Nee, julle moet lewe soos volgelinge van die Here Jesus Christus en nie voortdurend daarop uit wees om julle sondige begeertes te bevredig nie.

Romans 13

1 LET every soul be subject to higher powers: for there is no power but from God: and those that are, are ordained of God.2 Therefore he that resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God. And they that resist, purchase to themselves damnation.3 For princes are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good: and thou shalt have praise from the same.4 For he is God's minister to thee, for good. But if thou do that which is evil, fear: for he beareth not the sword in vain. For he is God's minister: an avenger to execute wrath upon him that doth evil.5 Wherefore be subject of necessity, not only for wrath, but also for conscience' sake.6 For therefore also you pay tribute. For they are the ministers of God, serving unto this purpose.7 Render therefore to all men their dues. Tribute, to whom tribute is due: custom, to whom custom: fear, to whom fear: honour, to whom honour.8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another. For he that loveth his neighbour, hath fulfilled the law.9 For Thou shalt not commit adultery: Thou shalt not kill: Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness: Thou shalt not covet: and if there be any other commandment, it is comprised in this word, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.10 The love of our neighbour worketh no evil. Love therefore is the fulfilling of the law.11 And that knowing the season; that it is now the hour for us to rise from sleep. For now our salvation is nearer than when we believed.12 The night is passed, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light.13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh in its concupiscences.
