Devoirs envers les autorités
1 Que chacun se soumette aux autorités qui nous gouvernent, car toute autorité vient de Dieu, et celles qui existent ont été établies par Dieu.2 C'est pourquoi celui qui s'oppose à l'autorité résiste à l'ordre que Dieu a établi, et ceux qui résistent attireront une condamnation sur eux-mêmes.3 En effet, on n'a pas à craindre les magistrats quand on fait le bien, mais quand on fait le mal. Veux-tu ne pas avoir à craindre l'autorité? Fais le bien et tu auras son approbation,4 car le magistrat est serviteur de Dieu pour ton bien. Mais si tu fais le mal, sois dans la crainte. En effet, ce n'est pas pour rien qu'il porte l'épéet, puisqu'il est serviteur de Dieu pour manifester sa colère en punissant celui qui fait le mal.
5 Il est donc nécessaire de se soumettre aux autorités, non seulement à cause de cette colère, mais encore par motif de conscience.
6 C'est aussi pour cela que vous payez des impôts, car les magistrats sont des serviteurs de Dieu qui s'appliquent entièrement à cette fonction.
7 Rendez à chacun ce qui lui est dû: l'impôt à qui vous devez l'impôt, la taxe à qui vous devez la taxe, le respect à qui vous devez le respect, l'honneur à qui vous devez l'honneur.
Devoirs envers les autres
8 Ne devez rien à personne, si ce n'est de vous aimer les uns les autres, car celui qui aime les autres a accompli la loi.9 En effet, les commandements: Tu ne commettras pas d'adultère, tu ne commettras pas de meurtre, tu ne commettras pas de vol, [tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignage,] tu ne convoiteras past, ainsi que tous les autres, se résument dans cette parole: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même.t
10 L'amour ne fait pas de mal au prochain; l'amour est donc l'accomplissement de la loi.
11 Cela est d'autant plus important que vous savez quel temps nous vivons: c'est l'heure de vous réveiller enfin du sommeil, car maintenant le salut est plus près de nous qu'au moment où nous avons cru.12 La nuit est bien avancée, le jour approche. Débarrassons-nous donc des œuvres des ténèbres et revêtons les armes de la lumière.13 Conduisons-nous honnêtement, comme en plein jour, sans orgies ni ivrognerie, sans immoralité ni débauche, sans dispute ni jalousie.
14 Mais revêtez-vous du Seigneur Jésus-Christ et ne vous préoccupez pas de votre nature propre pour satisfaire ses convoitises.
Romans 13
1 Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the powers that be are ordained of God.2 Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment.3 For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same:4 for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil.5 Wherefore ye must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.6 For this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God’s service, attending continually upon this very thing.7 Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.8 Owe no man anything, save to love one another: for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law.9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: love therefore is the fulfilment of the law.11 And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed.12 The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.13 Let us walk becomingly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy.14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
