Romeine 3

1 Maak dit dan saak dat jy 'n Jood is en dat jy besny is?2 Ja, tog! God het Hom immers aan Israel kom bekendmaak. Hy het ook toegelaat dat Israel sy woorde en dade op skrif stel.3 Maar wat dan as party Israeliete ongehoorsaam aan God is? Bring hulle ongehoorsaamheid God se lojaliteit in die gedrang?4 Nee, beslis nie. God hou altyd sy woord. Hy bly lojaal selfs al lieg en bedrieg almal op aarde. Dit is soos een van die psalms sê:
"Dit wat U sê, is reg. U wen altyd u saak wanneer mense U beskuldig dat U ontrou is."
5 God is heeltemal reg as Hy ons straf as ons verkeerde dinge doen. Sy straf is mos nie 'n teken dat Hy nou skielik onregverdig is nie. (Nou praat ek op 'n doodgewone manier.)6 Nee, natuurlik nie. God moet sy eer op die een of ander manier beskerm. Daarom veroordeel Hy almal wat nie doen wat Hy vra nie.
7 Party mense sê egter dat God onregverdig is as Hy hulle oor hulle sondes straf. Hulle loop en vertel dat al hulle leuens eintlik 'n groot hulp vir God is.8 Dit bied glo aan Hom die geleentheid om te wys dat Hy die waarheid gepraat het toe Hy gesê het dat Hy sondaars vergewe. Die ergste van alles is dat hierdie mense agter my rug sê dat hulle dit by my gehoor het. Natuurlik is dit 'n leuen. Ek verkondig nie sulke dinge nie. Die mense wat dit oor my sê, sal hulle verdiende straf kry.
9  Wat dan? Help dit regtig om 'n Jood te wees? Nee, glad nie. Ek het mos vroeër al gesê dat ons almal in die greep van die sonde vasgevang is, of ons nou Jode is of nie.10 Die Bybel stel dit baie duidelik:
"Niemand op aarde leef reg nie, niemand nie,11 niemand probeer om volgens God se wil te leef nie.12 Almal het die spoor byster geraak. Hulle het in sonde verval. Niemand doen goed nie, nie 'n enkele een nie.13 Hulle kele is 'n oop deur na die doderyk toe. Hulle tonge is vol bedrog. Hulle lippe is vol van die dodelikste gif.14 Elke woord wat hulle sê, is gelaai met bitterheid. Hulle vloek links en regs.15 Hulle kan nie voorbly om mekaar dood te maak nie.16 Agter hulle lê 'n spoor van vernietiging en ellende.17 Hulle weet nie wat dit beteken om in vrede met ander mense te leef nie.18 Hulle het geen eerbied vir God nie."
19 Ons weet dat alles wat Moses in die wet gesê het, spesifiek vir mense bedoel is wat onder die gesag van die wet staan. Daarom moet ons stilbly en ophou om so maklik die vinger na ander te wys. Ons almal staan skuldig voor God.20 Ons wat Jode is moenie dink dat God ons sal vryspreek as ons sy wet probeer gehoorsaam nie. Al wat die wet kan doen, is om vir ons te wys wat sonde is, maar dit help ons glad nie om op te hou verkeerde dinge doen nie.
21  Ek het nou baie goeie nuus vir julle: dit waarvan die Bybel praat, naamlik dat God mense sal vryspreek van hulle sondes, selfs al doen hulle nie stiptelik alles wat die wet van God sê nie, het uiteindelik waar geword.22 Mense wat in Jesus Christus glo, word nou deur God van hulle sondes vrygespreek. Dit geld vir elkeen wat glo.
23 Ons almal is sondaars. Nie een van ons leef tot God se eer nie.24 Ten spyte daarvan het Hy besluit om ons vry te spreek.25-26 Daarom het Hy Jesus Christus gestuur om ons te kom verlos. God doen dit omdat Hy baie vir ons omgee, nie omdat ons so goed leef nie. God het Jesus soos 'n offerlam laat slag vir al ons sondes. As ons in Hom glo, tel ons verkeerde dade glad nie meer nie.
God was 'n lang tyd geduldig met ons oor al ons sondes. Hy het ons nie links en regs daarvoor gestraf nie. Maar omdat God regverdig is en dit die een of ander tyd moet straf, het Hy besluit om ons sondes op Jesus Christus te laat neerkom. Daarom kan Hy nou elkeen vryspreek wat in Christus glo.
27 Wie kan dit nou nog waag om te spog oor hulle gehoorsaamheid aan die wet? Dit help in elk geval nie. Al wat nou saak maak, is geloof. Dit gaan glad nie meer oor wat óns alles vir God doen nie, maar wat Hý vir ons doen.28 God spreek mense vry slegs omdat hulle glo, nie omdat hulle die wet gehoorsaam nie.29 Hierdie goeie nuus geld vir die Jode sowel as vir ander volke. Die Jode het mos nie die alleenreg op God nie.30 Daar is slegs een God en Hy spreek alle mense vry wat in Hom glo. Of hulle besny is of nie, maak glad nie vir Hom saak nie.
31 Al gaan dit nou nie meer oor wat ons vir God moet doen nie, maar oor wat Hy vir ons doen, beteken dit nie dat die wet van Moses sy betekenis verloor het nie. Inteendeel, ons geloof gee juis aan die wet sy regte plek. Nou kan almal wat glo, die wet gehoorsaam.

Romans 3

1 Therefore what advantage does the Jew have, or what is the value of circumcision?2 Actually, there are many advantages.t First of all,st the Jewst were entrusted with the oracles of God.t3 What then? If some did not believe, does their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God?

4 Absolutely not! Let God be proven true, and every human beingt shown up as a liar,t just as it is written: “so that you will be justifiedtin your words and will prevail when you are judged.”t
5 But if our unrighteousness demonstratest the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is he?t (I am speaking in human terms.)s6 Absolutely not! For otherwise how could God judge the world?7 For if by my lie the truth of God enhancest his glory, why am I still actually being judged as a sinner?

8 And why not say, “Let us do evil so that good may come of it”? – as some who slander us allege that we say.t (Theirt condemnation is deserved!)

The Condemnation of the World

9 What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin,

10 just as it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one,

11 there is no one who understands,
there is no one who seeks God.

12 All have turned away,
together they have become worthless;
there is no one who shows kindness, not even one.”s

13 “Their throats are open graves,t
they deceive with their tongues,
the poison of asps is under their lips.”s

14 “Their mouths aretfull of cursing and bitterness.”s

15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood,

16 ruin and misery are in their paths,

17 and the way of peace they have not known.”s

18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”s
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are undert the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God.20 For no one is declared righteous before hims by the works of the law,t for through the law comest the knowledge of sin.21 But nowt apart from the law the righteousness of God (which is attested by the law and the prophets)t has been disclosed –22 namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christts for all who believe. For there is no distinction,23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.24 But they are justifiedt freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.25 God publicly displayedt himt at his deatht as the mercy seatt accessible through faith.t This was to demonstratet his righteousness, because God in his forbearance had passed over the sins previously committed.t

26 This wast also to demonstratet his righteousness in the present time, so that he would be justt and the justifier of the one who lives because of Jesus’ faithfulness.t
27 Where, then, is boasting?t It is excluded! By what principle?t Of works? No, but by the principle of faith!28 For we consider that a persont is declared righteous by faith apart from the works of the law.t29 Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, of the Gentiles too!30 Since God is one,t he will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

31 Do we then nullifyt the law through faith? Absolutely not! Insteadt we uphold the law.
