Fruits de la justice obtenue par la foi
1 Ainsi donc, déclarés justes sur la base de la foi, nous avons la paix avec Dieu par l'intermédiaire de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ;2 c'est aussi par son intermédiaire que nous avons accès par la foi à cette grâce, dans laquelle nous tenons ferme, et nous plaçons notre fierté dans l'espérance de prendre part à la gloire de Dieu.3 Bien plus, nous sommes fiers même de nos détresses, sachant que la détresse produit la persévérance,4 la persévérance la victoire dans l'épreuve, et la victoire dans l'épreuve l'espérance.
5 Or cette espérance ne trompe pas, parce que l'amour de Dieu est déversé dans notre cœur par le Saint-Esprit qui nous a été donné.
6 En effet, alors que nous étions encore sans force, Christ est mort pour des pécheurs au moment fixé.7 A peine mourrait-on pour un juste; peut-être accepterait-on de mourir pour quelqu'un de bien.8 Mais voici comment Dieu prouve son amour envers nous: alors que nous étions encore des pécheurs, Christ est mort pour nous.9 Puisque nous sommes maintenant considérés comme justes grâce à son sang, nous serons à bien plus forte raison sauvés par lui de la colère de Dieu.10 En effet, si nous avons été réconciliés avec Dieu grâce à la mort de son Fils lorsque nous étions ses ennemis, nous serons à bien plus forte raison sauvés par sa vie maintenant que nous sommes réconciliés.
11 Bien plus, nous plaçons notre fierté en Dieu par notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, par qui maintenant nous avons reçu la réconciliation.
12 C'est pourquoi, de même que par un seul homme le péché est entré dans le monde, et par le péché la mort, de même la mort a atteint tous les hommes parce que tous ont péché.13 En effet, avant que la loi ne soit donnée, le péché était déjà dans le monde. Or, le péché n'est pas pris en compte quand il n'y a pas de loi.14 Pourtant la mort a régné depuis Adam jusqu'à Moïse, même sur ceux qui n'avaient pas péché par une transgression semblable à celle d'Adam, qui est l'image de celui qui devait venir.15 Mais il y a une différence entre le don gratuit et la faute. En effet, si beaucoup sont morts par la faute d'un seul, la grâce de Dieu et le don de la grâce qui vient d'un seul homme, Jésus-Christ, ont bien plus abondamment été déversés sur beaucoup.16 Et il y a une différence entre ce don et les conséquences du péché d'un seul. En effet, c'est après un seul péché que le jugement a entraîné la condamnation, tandis que le don gratuit entraîne l'acquittement après un grand nombre de fautes.
17 Si par un seul homme, par la faute d'un seul, la mort a régné, ceux qui reçoivent avec abondance la grâce et le don de la justice régneront à bien plus forte raison dans la vie par Jésus-Christ lui seul.
18 Ainsi donc, de même que par une seule faute la condamnation a atteint tous les hommes, de même par un seul acte d'acquittement la justification qui donne la vie s'étend à tous les hommes.19 En effet, tout comme par la désobéissance d'un seul homme beaucoup ont été rendus pécheurs, beaucoup seront rendus justes par l'obéissance d'un seul.20 L'intervention de la loi a entraîné la multiplication des fautes, mais là où le péché s'est multiplié, la grâce a surabondé.
21 Ainsi, de même que le péché a régné par la mort, de même la grâce règne par la justice pour la vie éternelle, par Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur.
Romans 5
1 Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ;2 through whom also we have had our access by faith into this grace wherein we stand; and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.3 And not only so, but we also rejoice in our tribulations: knowing that tribulation worketh stedfastness;4 and stedfastness, approvedness; and approvedness, hope:5 and hope putteth not to shame; because the love of God hath been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given unto us.6 For while we were yet weak, in due season Christ died for the ungodly.7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: for peradventure for the good man some one would even dare to die.8 But God commendeth his own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved from the wrath of God through him.10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life;11 and not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.12 Therefore, as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned:--13 for until the law sin was in the world; but sin is not imputed when there is no law.14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the likeness of Adam’s transgression, who is a figure of him that was to come.15 But not as the trespass, so also is the free gift. For if by the trespass of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God, and the gift by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound unto the many.16 And not as through one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment came of one unto condemnation, but the free gift came of many trespasses unto justification.17 For if, by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; much more shall they that receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, even Jesus Christ.18 So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life.19 For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one shall the many be made righteous.20 And the law came in besides, that the trespass might abound; but where sin abounded, grace did abound more exceedingly:21 that, as sin reigned in death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
