El cristiano y la ley

1 Bien saben, hermanos, —estoy hablando a quienes conocen la leyt— que una persona está bajo el yugo de la ley sólo mientras vive. 2 Así, la mujer casada permanece legalmente ligada a su marido mientras él vive. Muerto el marido, la esposa queda libre de esa ley.t 3 Por tanto, si en vida del marido la mujer se entrega a otro hombre, se la considera adúltera; pero, si muere el marido, esa ley ya no la obliga; podrá casarse con otro hombre sin ser por ello adúltera. 4 De modo semejante, también ustedes, hermanos míos, por la muerte corporal de Cristo, han muerto a la ley. Son, pues, libres para entregarse a otro, al resucitado de entre los muertos, a fin de producir frutos para Dios.t 5 Mientras vivíamos sometidos a nuestras desordenadas apetencias humanast, éramos terreno abonado para que nuestras bajas pasiones, activadas por la ley, produjeran frutos de muerte.

6 Ahora, en cambio, muertos a la ley que nos tenía bajo su yugo, hemos quedado liberados de ella y podemos servir a Dios, no según la letra de la vieja leyt, sino conforme a la nueva vida del Espíritu.t

La ley y el pecado


7 ¿Querrá todo esto decir que la ley es pecado? ¡De ningún modo! Claro que, sin la ley, yot no habría experimentado el pecado. Por ejemplo, yo ignoraba lo que es tener malos deseos, hasta que vino la ley y dijo: No tengas malos deseos.t 8 Fue el pecado el que, aprovechando la ocasión que le proporcionaba el mandamiento, despertó en mí toda clase de malos deseos; sin la ley, pues, el pecado sería ineficaz. 9 Hubo un tiempo en que, al no haber ley, todo era vida para mí. Pero, al venir el mandamiento, revivió el pecado, 10 y la muerte se abatió sobre mí. Un mandamiento que debía ser portador de vida, se convirtió para mí en instrumento de muerte.t

11 Porque el pecado se aprovechó del mandamiento para engañarmet y, valiéndose de él, me causó la muerte.t
12 La ley, ciertamente, es santat. Y los mandamientos son santos, justos y buenos.

13 Entonces, algo~bueno en sí mismo ¿se habrá convertido en mortífero para mí? ¡De ningún modo! Lo que sucede es que el pecado, para demostrar que lo es verdaderamente, me causó la muerte sirviéndose de algo bueno. Y así, con ayuda del mandamiento, el pecado se convierte en algo sobremanera mortífero.

Bajo la tiranía del pecado


14 Sabemos, pues, que la ley pertenece a la esfera del espíritu. En cambio, yo no soy más que un simple mortal vendido como esclavo al pecado. 15 Realmente no acabo de entender lo que me pasa ya que no hago lo que de veras deseo, sino lo que detesto. 16 Pero si hago lo que detesto, estoy reconociendo que la ley es buena 17 y que no soy yo quien lo hace, sino el pecado que habita en mí, 18 pues soy consciente de que, en lo que respecta a mis desordenados apetitost, no es el bien lo que prevalece en mí; y es que, estando a mi alcance querer lo bueno, me resulta imposible realizarlo. 19 Quisiera hacer el bien que deseo y, sin embargo, hago el mal que detesto. 20 Ahora bien, si hago lo que detesto, no soy yo quien lo hace, sino el pecado que se ha apoderado de mí. 21 En resumidas cuentas, constato la existencia de esta regla: que deseo hacer el bien, pero es el mal lo que me domina 22 En mi interior humanot me complazco en la ley de Dios; 23 en mi cuerpo, sin embargo, experimento otra ley que lucha con los criterios de mi razón: es la ley del pecado que está en mí y me tiene encadenado.t 24 ¡Infeliz de mí! ¿Quién me librará de este cuerpo portador de muerte? 25 A Dios se lo agradeceré por medio de Jesucristo, Señor nuestro. Así que, concluyendo, por una parte mi razón me inclina a servir a Dios; por otra, mis desordenados apetitos me tienen esclavizado a la ley del pecado.t

The Believer’s Relationship to the Law

1 Or do you not know, brothers and sisterst (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law is lord over a persons as long as he lives?2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives, but if hert husband dies, she is released from the law of the marriage.ts3 So then,t if she is joined to another man while her husband is alive, she will be called an adulteress. But if hert husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she is joined to another man, she is not an adulteress.4 So, my brothers and sisters,t you also died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit to God.t5 For when we were in the flesh,t the sinful desires,t aroused by the law, were active in the members of our bodyt to bear fruit for death.

6 But now we have been released from the law, because we have diedt to what controlled us, so that we may serve in the new life of the Spirit and not under the old written code.t
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! Certainly, Is would not have known sin except through the law. For indeed I would not have known what it means to desire something belonging to someone elset if the law had not said, “Do not covet.”s8 But sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of wrong desires.t For apart from the law, sin is dead.9 And I was once alive apart from the law, but with the coming of the commandment sin became alive10 and I died. Sot I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life brought death!t11 For sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it I died.t

12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good.
13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? Absolutely not! But sin, so that it would be shown to be sin, produced death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.14 For we know that the law is spiritual – but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin.t15 For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want – instead, I do what I hate.t16 But if I do what I don’t want, I agree that the law is good.t17 But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me.18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it.t19 For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want!

20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me.
21 So, I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me.22 For I delight in the law of God in my inner being.23 But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members.24 Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

25 Thanks bes to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then,t I myself serve the law of God with my mind, butt with my flesh I servet the law of sin.
