Un exemple emprunté au mariage
1 Frères, vous savez sûrement déjà ce que je vais vous dire, car vous connaissez la loi : la loi n’a autorité sur un homme qu’aussi longtemps qu’il vit. 2 Par exemple, une femme mariée est liée par la loi à son mari tant qu’il vit ; mais si le mari meurt, elle est libérée de la loi qui la liait à lui. 3 Si donc elle devient la femme d’un autre homme du vivant de son mari, on la considère comme adultère ; mais si son mari meurt, elle est libre par rapport à la loi, de sorte qu’elle peut devenir la femme d’un autre sans être adultère. 4 Il en va de même pour vous, mes frères. Vous êtes morts à l’égard de la loi, en étant unis au corps du Christ. Ainsi vous appartenez maintenant à un autre, c’est-à-dire à celui qui a été ramené d’entre les morts afin que nous produisions ce qui est agréable à Dieu. 5 En effet, quand nous vivions selon notre propre nature, les désirs mauvais excités par la loi agissaient dans notre être tout entier et nous produisions ce qui mène à la mort.
6 Mais maintenant, nous sommes libérés de la loi, car nous sommes morts à ce qui nous retenait prisonniers. Nous pouvons donc servir Dieu d’une façon nouvelle, sous l’autorité de l’Esprit Saint, et non plus à la façon ancienne, sous l’autorité de la loi écrite.La loi et le péché
7 Que faut-il en conclure ? La loi est-elle péché ? Certainement pas ! Mais la loi m’a fait connaître ce qu’est le péché. En effet, je n’aurais pas su ce qu’est la convoitise si la loi n’avait pas dit : « Tu ne convoiteras past. » 8 Le péché a saisi l’occasion offerte par le commandement pour produire en moi toutes sortes de convoitises. Car, sans la loi, le péché est chose morte. 9 Autrefois, sans la loi, j’étais vivant ; mais quand le commandement est intervenu, le péché a pris vie 10 et moi je suis mort : le commandement qui devait conduire à la viet s’est trouvé, dans mon cas, conduire à la mort.
11 Car le péché a saisi l’occasion, il m’a trompét au moyen du commandement et, par lui, il m’a fait mourir.
12 Ainsi, la loi elle-même est sainte et le commandement est saint, juste et bon.
13 Ce qui est bon est-il devenu alors une cause de mort pour moi ? Certainement pas ! C’est le péché qui en a été la cause. Il a fait apparaître ainsi sa véritable nature de péché : il a utilisé ce qui est bon pour causer ma mort. Et voilà comment le péché est devenu, au moyen du commandement, plus gravement péché que jamais.L’homme dominé par le péché
14 Nous savons que la loi est spirituelle ; mais moi, je suis un être faible, vendu comme esclave au péché. 15 Je ne comprends pas ce que je fais : car je ne fais pas ce que je voudrais faire, mais je fais ce que je déteste. 16 Si je fais précisément ce que je ne veux pas, je reconnais par là que la loi est bonne. 17 Ce n’est donc pas moi qui agis ainsi, mais c’est le péché qui habite en moi. 18 Car je sais que le bien n’habite pas en moi, c’est-à-dire en l’être faible que je suis. Certes, le désir de faire le bien existe en moi, mais non la capacité de l’accomplir. 19 En effet, je ne fais pas le bien que je veux et je fais le mal que je ne veux pas.
20 Si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, alors ce n’est plus moi qui agis ainsi, mais le péché qui habite en moi.
21 Je découvre donc ce principe : moi qui veux faire le bien, je suis seulement capable de faire le mal. 22 Au fond de moi-même, je prends plaisir à la loi de Dieu. 23 Mais je trouve dans mon être une autre loi qui combat contre celle qu’approuve mon intelligence. Elle me rend prisonnier de la loi du péché qui est en moi. 24 Malheureux que je suis ! Qui me délivrera de ce corps qui m’entraîne à la mort ?
25 Dieu soit loué, par Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur !
Ainsi, je suis au service de la loi de Dieu par mon intelligence, mais dans ma faiblesse humaine, je suis asservi à la loi du péché.
Romans 7
1 Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth?2 For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband.3 So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man.4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God.5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were through the law, wrought in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.6 But now we have been discharged from the law, having died to that wherein we were held; so that we serve in newness of the spirit, and not in oldness of the letter.7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:8 but sin, finding occasion, wrought in me through the commandment all manner of coveting: for apart from the law sin is dead.9 And I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died;10 and the commandment, which was unto life, this I found to be unto death:11 for sin, finding occasion, through the commandment beguiled me, and through it slew me.12 So that the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and righteous, and good.13 Did then that which is good become death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might be shown to be sin, by working death to me through that which is good; --that through the commandment sin might become exceeding sinful.14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.15 For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practise; but what I hate, that I do.16 But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good.17 So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.18 For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not.19 For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practise.20 But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me.21 I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present.22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:23 but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members.24 Wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death?25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I of myself with the mind, indeed, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
